Album Release «Southern Return»

Guitarist Dimitri Howald lets himself drift on his third solo album Southern Return - with a curiously yearning music that brings together the most diverse influences from jazz, new wave and tropicalismo to create a very personal mixture. Drive off - to where the forests give way to palm trees and the landscapes are vast and tropical. The times, places and influences overlap in these 12 very personal pieces of music, which Dimitri Howald recorded all by himself: We hear Brazilian tropicalismo influences, light and delicate jazz guitar figures, harmonies that radiate an untranslatable saudade, while the wave drum machine sets the pace at times, as on earlier albums. Dimitri Howald recorded Southern Return over the course of three years. He plays with the individual musical elements, tinkers, sings, warms - and breaks the idyll with analog synth sounds that emphasize the shadows or with pieces that lead right into the youthful grunge band cellar. Slight melancholy, longing, unfulfilled and as yet unrealized dreams: all this resonates delicately in this music. The concert will be played with reinforcements, i.e. Howald&#x27;s Amnis Band will be stretched out and enlarged. His quartet, consisting of Stefan Schischkanov, Toni Schiavano and Flo Reichle, will be joined by Michael Haudenschild, Sebastian Lötscher, Nao Rohr and Cégiu for a truly extended evening.

Julian Lage Trio

The jazz guitarist Julian Lage is an exceptional talent: as an eight-year-old he already started playing with musicians such as Carlos Santana, Pat Metheny, Kenny Werner, Toots Thielemans, Gary Burton and many more. His uncramped, easy-going and readily accessible jazz understanding generated much attention for his works and he was rewarded with Grammy nominations. Although recognised as a virtuoso, Lage&#x27;s ability is never presented as a show of his spectacular technique. More important to him is the emotional content of his music. An exceptional talent indeed. For the evening he will be accompanied by bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Kenney Wollesen. Together they will further develop a blend of Jazz-Fusion, Blues and Rock’n’Roll. Bill Frisell Trio

When in Spring 2018 Bill Frisell played Moods together with Thomas Morgan, he played a breathtaking concert and left behind an amazed audience. Now Frisell - one of the most influential and innovative jazz guitarists of the 90&#x27;s - is back with his trio. When the guitarist performs with Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, it is impossible to predict in which direction the concert will head: song for song it will be decided what comes next; that could be tracks from Frisell&#x27;s countless albums, standards or other songs, which match the mood and the audience.

Joe Louis Walker

From the very first note of his guitar it is immediately clear - that&#x27;s Joe Louis Walker. With his energy-loaded, virtuoso guitar playing and whiskey-soaked voice, the guitarist is one of the greatest blues musicians of his generation. He is known worldwide as trailblazer of the genre and fuses Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Funk and Rock influences into his very own type of Blues. As the guitar virtuoso, singer and songwriter was ultimately admitted to the Hall Of Fame of the Blues Foundation in 2013 and his name appeared in the group with greats such as B.B. King, Hound Dog Taylor and Muddy Waters, he finally cemented his reputation as a «Living Blues Legend» (NPR Music).

«Of his touch, there is only one», was saxophonist Wayne Shorter&#x27;s answer to the question as to why he wanted Lionel Loueke to play on his major debut. Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are no less impressed by the abilities of the guitarist and for years have taken him on tour. Grown up in Benin, the musician is an exception, his totally individual sounds are an astonishing fusion of Jazz, West-African music and Rock. In Moods he and his trio, with which he has toured for 15 years, will present the new album «The Journey» (2018). Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Antoine Boyer & Samuelito

dieGitarre.ch & Moods present

Antoine Boyer and Samuel Rouesnel alias Samuelito became acquainted during their studies for classical guitar at the conservatory in Paris. Effortlessly and technically perfect, the 23-year-old Boyer and the three-year-older Samuelito weave Flamenco and Gypsy with Classical and Pop into something breathtakingly new. Their guitar voices enter skillfully into dialogue, they pass melodies to the other, exchange solo-passages and again and again bow to their role models such as the legendary Paco de Lucia, but also performers such as David Bowie («Life On Mars»). In 2016 the duo won the European guitar competition in Dresden, at the end of 2016 their first joint album «Coincidence» was released.

Dave Gisler Trio

«Rabbits on the Run»

With Marie Krüttli and Dave Gisler, we have two exponents of young Swiss jazz on stage. Very few musicians manage to speak via sounds. Not to mention those which penetrate to the depths of the human. On his new album «Rabbits on the Run» (2018), to be released on the Intakt label, Dave Gisler has managed to pull off exactly this trick. Moments of floating calm are contrasted with forceful outbreaks of collective improvisation, constantly driven by the trio&#x27;s finely-woven interplay. That&#x27;s contemporary jazz from Zurich with a global format.

Bill Frisell & Thomas Morgan Duo

A tender homage to the poetic jazz songs: the album «Small Town» (2017) by guitar legen Bill Frisell and the in-demand young bassist Thomas Morgan. In duo, they tackle some of the milestones of Bill’s musical biography and present these with a totally new appearance. In the process, the music can sometimes tend to the scant rather than the complex, focus on the puritanical and spartan quiet instead of noise. The music unfolds slowly from the deep pondering by the two musicians to effortlessly develop great sounds to fill the room.

Following a series of successful events in Winterthur, it is time for the In Guitar Festival to depart for new shores. In 2018 the Festival comes to Zürich and to Moods, which over four days provides us with insights into the wealth of variety in the guitar world: guitarists from all over the world and an Oud player invite us on a musical journey that covers classical, jazz, Oriental music and Flamenco. 4-Day Pass: 120.- Legendary guitarist Pat Martino has played with a broad spectrum of jazz greats of his time and has significantly influenced two generations of guitarists. His guitar playing is precise and his technique is flawless, be it quick runs or lyrical melodies. The Flamenco serves as the basis for excursions in the direction of Jazz, Fusion and World. The musical mixture is idiosyncratic, virtuosic and at the same time coherent. It brings together West African and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, combines them at times with hip-hop and the charm of griot music. Depart have travelled the jazz world for thirty years and impressed audiences with their energy-loaded sound. For their birthday tour the fulminant trio has invited the American Blues, Roots and Jazz guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly to join them. The multi-faceted guitarist was a sideman to, amongst others, Miles Davis and with his funky, groovy and highly musical playing is an ideal fit for Depart. For their jubilee, the newly-formed quartet sets the sails for a new musical adventure!

His uncramped, easy-going and readily accessible jazz understanding generated much attention for his works and he was rewarded with Grammy nominations. Although recognised as a virtuoso, Lage&#x27;s ability is never presented as a show of his spectacular technique with his instrument. More important to him is the emotional content of his music. An exceptional talent indeed.

Tomatito y Grupo

He is the epitome of Flamenco Nuevo: the Spanish guitarist José Fernandez Torres, known as Tomatito. From an early age he was discovered and encouraged by the Flamenco legend, Camarón de la Isla. Over the years he has developed into an outstanding guitarist, known for his virtuoso and imaginative playing. With his new program in the shape of a sextet, Tomatito builds a musical bridge between the tradition and the modern. The result is the finest Flamenco. 

Wolfgang Muthspiel Quintet

It is 18 months since the Austrian jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel with his quintet of selected musicians played Moods. The concert was one of the few that served as preparation for the recording of the ECM studio album, „Rising Grace“, released in 2016. Now he is back with that same repertoire and new own compositions, played by equally excellent musicians: On drums we have no less than Eric Harland, on trumpet is Ralph Alessi, one of the greats of the New York jazz scene. Piano and bass are served up by Jon Cowherd and Scott Colley respectively. A top-class jazz quintet!  Moods celebrates its 25th anniversary with Porgy &amp; Bess.

Remember Häns'che Weiss feat. Bireli Lagrène

Häns’sche Weiss, who died last year, was one of the most prominent exponents of gypsy jazz. For the French guitar virtuoso Biréli Lagrène, he was even the decisive source of inspiration to learn to play the guitar. Weiss‘ long-standing bassist, Vali Mayer from Zurich, and guitarist Holzmanno Winterstein invite Biréli Lagrène as an honourable guest to revive the musical works of Häns’sche Weiss. A homage to Gypsy Jazz!
