The carte blanche evenings at Moods are something special. Curated by leading Swiss jazz musicians, these evenings invite you to discover and inspire. And what&#x27;s better than an artist&#x27;s carte blanche evening? When all the musicians join forces. Every year, the Moods Musicians&#x27; Council selects Swiss musicians for a Carte Blanche. With a budget of 11,000 francs, they are free to organise their projects as they wish. There are (almost) no limits – be it concerts, sound installations or invitations to guest musicians. Dave Gisler, Franziska Bruecker, Jonas Ruther, Lucas Niggli, Roberto Domeniconi, Simon Grab, Tizia Zimmermann and Victoria Mozalevskaya have come up with something special to close this year&#x27;s Carte Blanche season at Moods. Solo, trio or all together: Moods Carte Blanche artists will showcase their talents in a variety of constellations on 6th June. Instead of concentrating on their own musical creations, as they did in their individual shows, they will create unique soundscapes together on this evening. Familiar patterns and genre boundaries are completely ignored. For example, while Simon Grab - the noisemaker par excellence - is completely electronic, Victoria Mozalevskaya originally comes from classical music and has now dedicated herself to contemporary jazz. Worlds will collide, we promise.

The story of Ingoma Busuku began with an initial contact between Jonas Ruther and South African saxophonist Linda Sikakhane. Mediated by Nduduzo Makhathini, the two had originally planned to tour Switzerland in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the tour had to be postponed several times before finally taking place in 2022. On the subsequent tour in South Africa, they also performed with singer Paras Dlamini. This tour will be his first appearance in Europe. The band&#x27;s name &#x27;Ingoma Busuku&#x27; also comes from the South African singing tradition and means &#x27;song of the night&#x27; in isiZulu, referring to the lyrics, which are deeply rooted in the Zulu tradition and at the same time reflect universal themes such as love, spirituality and connection to the ancestors. The band combines these with groovy rhythms, spiritual melodies and fine improvisation. During their tour of South Africa, the band recorded their first album, &#x27;Isambulo&#x27; (2022), produced by none other than Nduduzo Makhathini.

Album Release «Southern Return»

Guitarist Dimitri Howald lets himself drift on his third solo album Southern Return - with a curiously yearning music that brings together the most diverse influences from jazz, new wave and tropicalismo to create a very personal mixture. Drive off - to where the forests give way to palm trees and the landscapes are vast and tropical. The times, places and influences overlap in these 12 very personal pieces of music, which Dimitri Howald recorded all by himself: We hear Brazilian tropicalismo influences, light and delicate jazz guitar figures, harmonies that radiate an untranslatable saudade, while the wave drum machine sets the pace at times, as on earlier albums. Dimitri Howald recorded Southern Return over the course of three years. He plays with the individual musical elements, tinkers, sings, warms - and breaks the idyll with analog synth sounds that emphasize the shadows or with pieces that lead right into the youthful grunge band cellar. Slight melancholy, longing, unfulfilled and as yet unrealized dreams: all this resonates delicately in this music. The concert will be played with reinforcements, i.e. Howald&#x27;s Amnis Band will be stretched out and enlarged. His quartet, consisting of Stefan Schischkanov, Toni Schiavano and Flo Reichle, will be joined by Michael Haudenschild, Sebastian Lötscher, Nao Rohr and Cégiu for a truly extended evening.

RUTHER LANA & MISS C-LINE feat. Gaston Bandimic

RUTHER LANA &amp; MISS C-LINE is a trio from Switzerland, formed by drummer Jonas Ruther with MISS C-LINE rap, vocals and FX, François Lana on synthesiser and sampler. With influences from modern rap and beat culture, combined with collective improvisation and complex psychedelic sound structures, the three strong personalities create a very intense musical experience on stage. For his Carte Blanche, Ruther invites the Senegalese rapper Gaston Bandimic, who raps in Wolof and ignites an impressive rhythmic fire live.

With the Lea Gasser 5tet, the young accordionist brings her own wonderfully enchanting musical language to the stage. Embedded in the sound of her quintet, the musician creates lyrical compositions that describe seemingly inconspicuous everyday moments and fuse jazz with classical and folk music elements. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Chloé Marsigny Sextet

Bass clarinettist Chloé Marsigny draws inspiration for her deeply jazzy compositions from the universe and the laws of physics and astrophysics. The sextet impresses the audience with exciting arrangements and playful melodies in which the warm sound of the bass clarinet comes into its own. Refreshing, unpredictable and cosmic. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Maud Paquis Quintet

Maud Paquis is a French-Swiss author, composer, pianist and singer. In the language of Molière, she tells mysterious stories about the call of seagulls, a witch hunt, Greek myths and the creation of the universe - sometimes poppy, sometimes inspired by swing or bossa nova, but always original. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Polarbaeren are four young musicians who set out to shatter the conventions of what new jazz should and shouldn&#x27;t do. Whirling, abrupt, straightforward, with powerful beats and insane creativity, the band captivates their listeners and wraps them up in a snowstorm of sounds. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Quiet Tree

Quiet Tree is a Swiss trio consisting of Simon Spiess (saxophone / reeds), Jonas Reuther (drums) and Marc Méan (piano &amp; synths). Their music is rooted in the rich, mercurial soil of this thing we tend to call jazz. Unpacking the tree metaphor a bit further: the crown of this elegant being reaches for, and opens up into, the sprawling cosmic dimensions of the unsound, all types of potential sonic after-futures and echoes of worlds beyond! The band describes their music as an 80s-pop-type sort of warmth, but with a space-jazz approach lifted and transported back somewhere around the year 2040. The project’s key focus is working with the song-form. Every member is responsible for submitting compositions and every piece that makes the final cut, gets a mild improv-based facelift every time it gets played. Their manifesto reads: To tell rich stories using sound, capture colour and energy with melodies. Make sure to leave ample space for every instrument to breathe! Everything is possible as long as it expresses a core unity. Transpose the awareness of space to listeners, because you can never go wrong with making extra space for others.

Meta Zero&#x27;s music is of the here and now, full of adventure and the joy of experimentation. Shaking the foundations of the jazz tradition, the four musicians create dreamlike experiences characterised by colourful sounds, equality and openness. On their debut album &#x27;Prometheus&#x27; (2019), the band played with the avant-garde, timing and tempi, creating a work to surrender to and dream about. What can we expect from the new album? We are all very curious!

Emilio Giovanoli Quintet

The project was initiated by Emilio Giovanoli, a double bass player and composer from Ticino who is already well-known in the Swiss music scene as a versatile sideman. His aim is to bring together musicians with a shared vision whom he met during their studies at the renowned Jazzcampus in Basel. The resonant, earthy sound of Emilio Giovanoli&#x27;s double bass blends with the soundscapes created by the brilliant touch of Alexandre Cahen on piano (France), the reactive groove of drummer Max Liebenberg (South Africa), the immersive playing of guitarist Martin Theurillat (Chile/Switzerland) and the airy lines of saxophonist Lennard Fiehn (Germany). Their imagination is fed by the broad tradition of jazz filtered through the meditative landscapes of the Alps. These omnipresent natural obstacles with their peaks, lakes and forests provide a meditative source of inspiration, creating music that is radiant, vulnerable and communicative. The project&#x27;s first self-produced EP is planned for the end of 2023.

Ravi Ramsahye PROTOTYPE

Ravi Ramsahye PROTOTYPE stands like an archetype in the collective subconscious for a model that combines research and accessibility. The quartet develops a progressive jazz with rock and pop influences, guided by odd meters. Ravi Ramsahye&#x27;s music emerges from an introspection nourished by the emotional intensity of pop-rock and the world of video games, drawing enchanting soundscapes while captivating with an explosive rhythm. This energy is discharged in the different backgrounds of the band members, who dialog with each other to form intoxicating atmospheres and sonic explorations. The pieces are pervaded by rhythmic asymmetries and yet find a flow in their irregularity. In this stormy cloud, floating melodies entwine with harmonic sensibility. PROTOTYPE is the result of an eclectic symbiosis and an invitation to take off – to lift off the body and the heart.

Knobil

Knobil is a vocal jazz quartet founded by Louise Knobil, a double bass player, singer and composer living in Lausanne. Inspired by Esperanza Spalding, Charles Mingus and Oscar Pettiford, she interprets her own compositions with her double bass and voice in a style between singer-songwriter, post-bop and glitery jazz. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

The sound of the Bernese collective ARBRE is rooted in clear and gnarly rhythms composed of carefully selected sounds played with a light, precise hand. Their groove spans densely woven acoustic and electronic textures and deeply branching soundscapes. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Filippo Valli Quartet

The Filippo Valli Quartet from Ticino brings together four young musicians who combine their talents and collaborative spirit to create a fascinating and cohesive musical experience. Their collective artistry and seamless interplay results in performances that captivate audiences with their fusion of traditional and contemporary jazz, R&amp;B, soul and hip-hop influences. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Arthur Donnot Group

Arthur Donnot is an up-and-coming musician from Lausanne whose calm breath on the saxophone unfolds a warm sound all its own, almost reminiscent of organic singing. His compositions are rich and somber, yet have a luminous note. His influences range from Mac Demarco to Serge Gainsbourg, from hip hop to indie folk. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Momotrope

Momotrope&#x27;s music rises spherically into the air, dreams along melancholically, and then jolts itself back down to earth. The mixture of finely tuned, sometimes bulky beautiful synth worlds, the electronically enriched drum set and two voices gives Momotrope an idiosyncratic sound that is always surprisingly profound, almost mystical. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

The two finalists will compete against each other for the victory. The first concert starts at 8:30 pm and the second at 9:45 pm. This will be followed by the award ceremony, including the announcement of the first-place winners of the ZKB Audience Award. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Louis Matute Large Ensemble

Louis Matute is an exceptional exponent of the electrified guitar who is involved in a whole series of major projects. He is inspired by current forms of jazz and mixes them with elements of Latin American music. The result is a sound that is warm and rhythmic, yet mysterious and melancholy at the same time. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Dimitri Howald Trio

With his eyes closed and his heart open, guitarist Dimitri Howald has established himself as an innovative musician within just a few years. He is distinguished by a unique sound and profound compositions and succeeds in giving space to wild soloistic hustle and bustle while at the same time allowing the dormant impressionisms that are part of Howald’s craft to shine in the backlight. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Arthur Hnatek Trio

The double-bass accentuates the angular riffs and breaks, whilst unshakeable saxophone solos soar over improvised passages. The compositions of Arthur Hnatek, the drummer from Geneva, show that there is also Jazz somewhere between Metal, Ambient-Electro and Breakbeat. The trio - with the highly talented Fabien Iannone and Francesco Geminiani – won the ZKB Jazz Prize in 2019 and in 2021 released its debut album, «Static». Hnatek, known as a sideman for musicians such as Tigran Hamasyan and Erik Truffaz, here proves once again, that he is also an exceptionally gifted bandleader.
