We talk to Ed Partyka about Gil Evans and his masterpieces, his influence on jazz history after the Second World War, sound language and band leading. Ed also tells us which musicians he would like to work with outside of conventional big band jazz.Gil Evans is a great inspiration for Ed Partyka in many ways. Gil Evans not only composed and arranged masterpieces, but also developed the sound language of jazz as a whole after the Second World War. Whereas the bass clarinet, tuba and French horn had previously only been heard in classical music, from then on they were also represented in a big band line-up and permanently broadened the palette of sound colours and textures of jazz music.
On 18 January, the Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Karolina Strassmayer will perform at Moods under the direction of Ed Partyka and present the complete programme of the original arrangements of Gil Evans' classic album "New Bottle Old Wine" from 1958.
