The trombonists of the Jazz Trombone Festival

The Jazz Trombone Festival will take place at Moods and GZ Riesbach from 22 to 26 January. To introduce the trombonists, the curators Nils Wogram and Florian Weiss have put together a catalogue of questions. A selection of serious to less serious answers provides an insight into the world of trombonists.

What is your favourite trombone joke?
Nils Wogram:  «Never trust an instrument that changes its size while being played.» –Frank Zappa
Florian Weiss: Not really meant to be funny, in an article about a concert I gave, the trombone was once referred to as a «brass viola». Also quite good and something I liket o use in my lessons: the «tone finder».
Describe in three words what you like about the trombone.
Michael Flury: Simplicity, versatility and of course the macro/micro slide!
Florian Weiss: Changeability (of the sound), limitations (of what can be played technically), simplicity (of the instrument).
If not the trombone, then what?
Victor Decamp: I would build wooden boats and sail around the world.
Shannon Barnett:  The actual voice.
How many calories does a jazz trombonist burn on average during a concert?
Michael Flury: That depends a lot on the style and context: Downtempo doom metal is similar to a high-paced half marathon, big band swing is similar to an apple.
Victor Decamp: We burn way too many calories compared to the number of notes we play.
If the trumpet were a plant or an animal, what would it be?
Andreas Tschopp: A fly agaric. It has a mind-expanding effect and creates networks.
Jan Schreiner: My imagination is always a ballet-dancing elephant in a china shop.
Curtis Fuller orBill Watrous?
Bernhard Bamert: Curtis Fuller und Bill Watrous!
Josephine Nagorsnik: Albert Mangelsdorff.
Why should you fall in love with a jazz trombonist?
Andreas Tschopp: They prefer to laugh at themselves rather than at others.
Samuel Blaser: Because trombonists have a great sense of humour!
What song do you sing in the shower?
Jan Schreiner: If I'm in a good mood: Bordogni Nr. 2, if I'm in a bad mood: Bordogni Nr. 4
Samuel Blaser: I don't sing in the shower, but I do hum.
Which talent would you like to have?
Josephine Nagorsnik: Quick-wittedness.
Nils Wogram: Infinite patience.
When are you happiest as a musician?
Bernhard Bamert:  Playing in a successful jam session with musicians you've never met before and suddenly getting the feeling that you understand each other blindly. A kind of Pentecost miracle.
Shannon Barnett: When it's about the music and nothing else.
