Every year, the students of Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich (MKZ) can have their musical progress assessed by a jury of experts as part of the Stufentest. Outstanding contributions from all seven levels are then performed in front of an audience. This year&#x27;s final concert again reflects the stylistic breadth of MKZ - from Mozart to Motörhead, played and sung by eager beginners to stage-tested near-pros. Insomnia ist the best drug. Insomnia until everything dissolves. In every tremble, in every blur there is a hidden calmness. Days become dreams. The main road, the church bells - everything loses itself in the tape delay, hums to itself like an organ. Now every civilisation feels as if it was deeply sunken into the Indian Ocean. Autumn in the jungle, muffled rain. Today, LEONI LEONI keeps late hours and becomes twinned with her DX7 - with the next blink of an eye songs emerge, with the next rain comes a tape - and the day after everything could be different already: Forever easy sleep.

The fact that musicians sometimes process what they have experienced is not a unique selling point. But Aino Salto has the vehemence, the acumen and the ability to confront even the most unpleasant things with (black) humor like hardly anyone else. Born in France, raised in Leipzig and now living in Bern, the musician Sonia Loenne had the feeling for years that she had to vomit something musical, as she describes it in her own words. Something had to come out. But it wasn&#x27;t clear what that was. Until I howled the music for my first album into the keys in the fall of 2023. Fortunately. Because Imagine People as Adolescent Birds is a collection of seven powerful songs, it&#x27;s music about sisterhood and feminist mushroom networks (Mother Mushroom), anger (Anger) and life as the feeling of looking at power lines while driving (Powerlines). The music comes from the bottom of their hearts, from flugelhorn, double bass, keys and drums, from the bottom of their throats. Vomit drips out of every syllable, a mixture of fear, naivety, hopeless optimism and the scent of raspberries.

Tropikaos - Carnaval Adalu invites you on a journey through the sounds, sights and culture of Brazilian carnival, where people revel in colorful, harmonious chaos at the world&#x27;s biggest street parties. As in previous years, the Bloco Adalu will kick things off, with various percussive groups from Zurich coming together in one tempo. Led by the talented musician Juninho Ibituruna, these groups will open our carnival party in the foyer of the Schiffbau. Similar to a traditional Bloco de Rua, we will bring together the groups Ilù Àiya, Borumbaia and Zurich School of Samba.

Coletivo Gira

Women unite their voices, their instruments and their love of samba in a performance that revives the great samba classics, but also introduces the samba of the new generation. The work of women, whether as composers or performers, is always at the forefront. The group is made up of multi-instrumentalists from different regions of Brazil and the world who bring their idiosyncrasies and influences, resulting in a unique performance full of power and lightness, without neglecting the activism and resistance of women who are still fighting for greater representation in samba. The focus of the concert is on samba and other Afro-Brazilian rhythms from the Samba de Terreiro. The sound of the hand drums (ilú and conga) is present in most of the arrangements and gives them an independent tonal identity without neglecting their roots.

Experience the infectious sound of Brazilian carnival with Tropikaos! The band was put together by the Adalu association with the aim of presenting the best sound of Brazilian carnival. With their energetic performance, they take the audience on a musical journey through the whole of Brazil - from north to south, from old classics to modern hits. With their energetic performance, the talented musicians Dandara Modesto (vocals), Juninho Ibitiruna (percussion), Carlinhos Assuncao (percussion), Mauricio Caruso (guitar), Thiago K (vocals, guitar) and Rafael (bass) captivate the audience and ignite an irresistible groove that makes you want to dance. The band Tropikaos is more than just a band, they are an artistic experience that enchants the senses and ignites pure joie de vivre.

Cris Trópica has set herself the goal of spreading the extensive Brazilian music culture, with all its roots and influences, in Europe. In her project BelezaPuraSomSistema, she regularly collaborates with DJs from home and abroad who share her passion for Brazilian music. She will bring the carnival to a close with hot Brazilian beats.

What happens here is hypnotic. The band Vaudou Game from Lyon, France, with its charismatic singer from Togo, quotes Afro-funk as it originated in Benin and Togo in the seventies. In other words, where voodoo is part of popular culture and has also left its ecstatic magic in the music. Frontman Peter Solo and his musicians groove uncompromisingly to the point of trance. It&#x27;s like fusing James Brown and Fela Kuti to create a new superfunk.

Together in Sound is a new event in collaboration with Brandy Butler that invites music enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the artistry of albums in a communal setting, offering a rare opportunity for focused, intentional listening. Each session a featured guest will present their favorite album, offering a personal introduction that delves into the significance of their selection. Following the introduction, attendees will listen to the full album recording together, uninterrupted, in an atmosphere that encourages deep engagement with the art of listening. Together in Sound offers a thoughtful and reflective way to start a Sunday morning, blending music appreciation with community interaction. The guest in this edition is rapper, actor and slam poet Laurin Buser. Together we listen to the album “The Ecstatic” (2009) by Mos Def.

Her playing, both intimate and vibrant, invites you on a sensory voyage, an immersion in a universe where every note tells a story. With her new album Stories, recorded in New York, the young Swiss pianist Manon Mullener traces a true musical fairy tale through 8 testimonies of people she has met all over the world, offering a different perspective on instrumental music. The audience experiences a modern jazz concert with the influences of Cuban music that make Manon&#x27;s playing so special, while also experiencing the life stories of Zoila, a 95-year-old Cuban grandmother who tells of the perfumery she ran with her husband in Havana in the 1950; Noh, a Mexican cab driver who still carries on the values of the Maya today; or Willard, a theater character from the upscale neighborhoods of New York fascinated by opera. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam offers an important platform for the Swiss jazz jam scene. After the musical opening of the jam band, lively and exciting sound conversations begin between musicians who spontaneously meet on stage, reflecting the diversity of jazz in all its facets. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam is supported by the non-profit association JazzBaragge. There is no presale for JazzBaragge, only box office.

First the world moved closer together, then the borders were drawn up again. That&#x27;s the bad news. But the good news is that OY are not part of it. rSinger/keyboardist Joy Frempong and producer/drummer Melodydreamer have been making music across all musical, linguistic and cultural borders for a decade. The Berlin-based duo with roots in Ghana and Switzerland have thrilled audiences on stages around the world, whether at festivals such as Eurockéenes in France, Rec Beat in Brazil or at club shows in downtown Cairo and New York. 2022 saw them on tour in Europe with the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo as a support act. It is therefore only logical that the title of their current album is World Wide We Polyglot negotiations of political and personal themes are musically realized. Kefaya &amp; Elaha Soroor is an award-winning collective that combines synth-rock, post-punk and psychedelic jazz with the rich textures of Afghan folk music to create a sound that transcends boundaries and genres. Accordingly, the collaboration was praised by the Guardian as one of the most fascinating new bands of the year. Elaha Soroor had achieved great fame in her home country thanks to the show Afghan Star. When the young singer spoke out against Sharia law, she received death threats and had to flee to London. Here she met the band Kefaya and the idea for this album immediately began to mature. The result is an album that is intended as a statement against the prejudices against the Afghan people.

Shortly after the equinox, we will celebrate the Nowruz Festival for the third time on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Nowruz means “new day” and has been celebrated for 3,000 years by over 300 million people in the Balkans, the Black Sea region, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East. Bajar, the Kurdish-rock band led by frontman Vedat Yıldırım (founding member of the internationally acclaimed Kardeş Türküler), blends folk, rock, and traditional eastern tunes: a project born in urban Istanbul’s hybrid neighborhoods and streets. Singing in both Kurdish and Turkish, the band creates music, that is deeply political, challenges and protests the ongoing ghettoization of minorities, racial and cultural discrimination, inequality, democracy, and freedom. Perhaps, this is best seen in their cover version of «They Don’t Care About Us», which they have recorded with Defjen, a daf-percussion-collective from Istanbul. A tour de force: reinterpreting and blending Michael Jackson’s masterpiece with Eastern tunes, switching Brazilian percussions with the Daf, and adding Vedat’s strong Kurdish voice, the song is a call - once again and after more than a quarter of a century - for freedom and justice.

The story of Ingoma Busuku began with an initial contact between Jonas Ruther and South African saxophonist Linda Sikakhane. Mediated by Nduduzo Makhathini, the two had originally planned to tour Switzerland in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the tour had to be postponed several times before finally taking place in 2022. On the subsequent tour in South Africa, they also performed with singer Paras Dlamini. This tour will be his first appearance in Europe. The band&#x27;s name &#x27;Ingoma Busuku&#x27; also comes from the South African singing tradition and means &#x27;song of the night&#x27; in isiZulu, referring to the lyrics, which are deeply rooted in the Zulu tradition and at the same time reflect universal themes such as love, spirituality and connection to the ancestors. The band combines these with groovy rhythms, spiritual melodies and fine improvisation. During their tour of South Africa, the band recorded their first album, &#x27;Isambulo&#x27; (2022), produced by none other than Nduduzo Makhathini.

Tonight with Jools Holland - the British music legend returns! The multi-talent became known in 1974 with the new wave formation Squeeze, and since 1992 he has hosted the successful music show &quot;Later... with Jools Holland&quot; on BBC, while also touring with his own boogie-woogie, R&#x27;n&#x27;B and pop program. He is always accompanied by a top-class line-up. This year he will be supported by the Jamaican R&#x27;n&#x27;B voice Ruby Turner.

Mark Lettieri

Mark Lettieri is both an extremely versatile guitarist and a very busy man. At home in virtually every genre, he is currently one of the most sought-after studio musicians and has toured with a number of major artists. In 2008, Lettieri became an integral part of the jazz/world group Snarky Puppy, where he contributes as guitarist, arranger and composer. Outside of Snarky Puppy, Lettieri has released five albums as a leader, and in 2018 Lettieri joined forces with Vulfpeck offshoot The Fearless Flyers, which includes Vulfpeck&#x27;s Cory Wong and Joe Dart on guitar and bass, respectively, and drummer Nate Smith (Chris Potter, Pat Metheny). His most recent recordings include David Crosby, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Adam Levine, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Tori Kelly, Ledisi, Tamela Mann, Eric Roberson, Lecrae, Lupe Fiasco, Keyshia Cole, Xzibit and numerous radio and TV jingles.

Tribute to Bill Holman 

Big band musicians around the world mourn the passing of master composer and arranger Bill Holman, who died on May 6, 2024 at the age of 97. His long and prolific career spanned seven decades and produced hundreds of compositions and arrangements that have become beloved core repertoire of big bands and favorites of their audiences around the world. The last time Bill Holman was in Switzerland (2014), he conducted a concert of his music with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, which remains one of the most memorable performances in the ZJO&#x27;s long history. Our musical directors Daniel Schenker and Ed Partyka met in 1996 as members of the Generations Festival Big Band in Frauenfeld, which was conducted by - you guessed it - Bill Holman. The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the wonderful music and long life of Bill Holman on March 27, performing some of his most popular works as well as some rarely heard gems that highlight the orchestra and its outstanding soloists.

Portable Infinity

Portable Infinity is the name of the Scandinavian-American project. The All-star quartet not only has jazz history with it, but also personal meetings with greats such as Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and Esbjörn Svensson. A lot is connected here: the long experience, the openness to new things and the pure desire to play. “As a child I was always inventing something,” says Benjamin Koppel. “I invented a whole world and a language for this world. I use all that in my music.” The Danish saxophonist and award-winning novelist is a defining figure of European jazz, always in exchange with the American tradition. In the quartet he meets the magically grooving drummer Magnus Öström – a former member of the legendary EST, the incredibly versatile bassist Scott Colley and the energetic pianist Jacob Karlzon, for whom every concert is an event: “For me, performing live in front of an audience is the original place for music, an ecstatic experience for both sides.”

All the best, dear Peter! Peter Schärli has been performing on stage for almost fifty years. In this country, of course, and in the European region, but also at festivals halfway around the world, in Asia, Africa, Central and South America. There are reasons for this constant success - consistent quality at a high level. And the fact that this often prevails sooner or later is one of the comforting realizations of our existence. Glenn Ferris is also one of the few world-class musicians who can claim to have played with the brilliant Frank Zappa: As a very young trombonist, he was a member of the small Wazoo Orchestra, which played a few of Zappa&#x27;s best and most complex compositions on a world tour. Ferris has been working professionally since he was sixteen years old and his discography, with over a hundred CDs under his own name and as a sideman, reads like a Who&#x27;s Who of jazz and pop music: from Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Tim Buckley and the Average White Band to Don Ellis, Quincy Jones, Art Pepper, Tony Scott, Archie Shepp and Billy Cobham to John Scofield, Michel Petrucciani and the Brecker Brothers. Quality also means artistic integrity for Schärli. An artist does not have to fulfill expectations, he has to be himself. Schärli is exactly that, the result is a body of work that is constantly evolving, yet always bears his signature. You can feel it in the music here: there are beautiful melodies, clever chords, plus swing, drive, sophisticated improvisations, virtuoso craftsmanship, empathetic interplay - in short, everything that good music can offer. What more could we want?

Her work navigates theater, music, film, and performance, dissolving boundaries to create new meanings. “Imagine A Black Child” is a powerful performance that merges sound archives, self-produced music, video, and dance into a contemporary ritual.

Yao Bobby x Simon Grab feat. Freeky (aka Nathalie Fröhlich) 

Simon Grab&#x27;s music is celebrating the error, taming raw noises and electronic feedback circuits to find a musical balance within the randomness. The combination of dirty bass electronics by the Swiss noisemaker with straightforward rapped lyrics in French and Ewe, the native language of Togolese MC Yao Bobby, culminates in a dark, experimental hip-hop and bass noise experience. As the duo ‘Yao Bobby x Simon Grab’, they&#x27;ve been working together since 2018, releasing their music on the Bristol label LavaLava Records, and some of their music videos have won awards. Other tracks have appeared on compilations by labels such as Exist Records, Syrphe and the Nyege Nyege Tapes. The latter organises the renowned Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda, where the duo has just performed for the second time. FREEKY is the new project from rapper Nathalie Fröhlich, whose hard-hitting lyrics have resonated across Europe in recent years. With this project, she dives even deeper into the raw energy and intensity for which she is renowned, mixing her incisive flow with productions that are much darker than usual. The project is an ode to freedom, to MC culture, but above all to the real underground rave. The kind that&#x27;s hidden away, where anything goes, the kind that will never be profitable but will make you rich. The kind that, though sometimes threatened, will never disappear.

A superb live band meets renowned MCs and vocalists for a freestyle show: that&#x27;s the Style Bakery! Renowned acts present their songs in unique versions specially developed for this evening. Raw and unpolished. Hosted by the outstanding collective Jonny Ive, Pablo, Toni Schiavano and Flo Reichle. This April edition features the enchanting Lausanne soul singer Nnavy. We are really looking forward to her touching voice and her incredibly charismatic performance. Her star is rising steeply: she played at the Montreux Jazz Festival, tours at home and abroad and had an appearance on the cult format Colors-Show. The rap legend Bandit from Glarus will also be joining us: in the noughties, he shaped the Swiss rap scene like no other with his collective Luut&amp;Tüütli. His urgency and energetic style leaves no one cold, which can also be experienced impressively in his legendary freestyle performances.

Anyone who has experienced Nikki Hill singing her heart out knows that this woman is like a thunderbolt! Loud, bright and electrifying! Together with husband and guitarist Matt Hill and her ‘Pirate Crew’, the North Carolina-born singer is finally bringing her unmistakable Deep South Soul back to Moods. With unfiltered energy, they take on all varieties of American roots music and deliver a sound that makes you believe in rock and roll again.

The Zürich Jazz Kollektiv is a new contemporary jazz ensemble born out of the desire to create a creative network of local musicians to represent, cultivate and develop contemporary jazz in Switzerland. The ensemble sees itself as a platform for musical innovation and collaboration that both enriches the genre and strengthens and inspires the community of local jazz musicians. The collective&#x27;s music is penned by its founder, tenor saxophonist Victoria Mozalevskaya, and unfolds through the ensemble&#x27;s collaborative vision in energetic live performances and sophisticated arrangements. Joining them for the grand opening is none other than Alex Sipiagin, a longtime member of the big bands of Charles Mingus and George Gruntz and a fellow musician with jazz greats such as Dave Holland and Randy Brecker.

Ashley Henry

Here, structures are broken up and boundaries are explored! The London pianist and singer Ashley Henry mixes jazz with neo-soul, hip-hop and R&#x27;n&#x27;B in his compositions. The result is a groovy sound that offers room for breakbeats as well as Henry&#x27;s lyrical and playful piano solos. In a short space of time, Ashley Henry has developed from a newcomer to an important voice in the British jazz scene – the new LP «Who We Are», which will be released in October 2024, is something to look forward to.

The Blackbyrds

The Blackbyrds? These are the guys behind rare groove classics such as «Walking In Rhythm» or «Rock Creek Park». The band was founded in 1973 as a project by trumpeter and teacher Dr. Donald Byrd. Together they created an unmistakable style between jazz, funk and disco that inspired a whole range of hip-hop artists in the 90s, from Tupac to NAS to MF Doom. After celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2023, The Blackbyrds are currently on tour with founding members Keith Killgo and Joe Hall.

An NTS resident DJ at Moods?! Emel Ilter is a record collector, DJ and radio host based in Basel. She is currently resident on NTS Radio London, presenting pieces of her record collection with her regular show «Heavy Love Affair». On RadioX Basel, she is host and producer of the monthly music special «Soul Sketches», and is part of the «NOT TOO YOUNG Swiss Soul Weekender» collective which is organising an annual vinyl-only Rare Soul event in Lucerne since 2012; creating a gathering where like-minded collectors can connect, celebrate and worship rare and unknown music. She&#x27;s been sharing her music as a DJ on events in Switzerland and across Europe for over a decade, mainly playing rare soul and black music from 60&#x27;s to today,compiling the known with the unknown and bringing into focus the underrated and obscure side of soul music and beyond.

Now 82 years old, after 30 albums and 50 years of career, Bonga has experienced multiple lives. First as an athlete, he ran the 400 meters for Portugal which once colonized Angola, then he played football for Benfica in Lisbon. As an activist, he campaigned against the Portuguese oppression of the Salazar regime and for the independence of his native land, which ultimately led him to his exile in the Netherlands. There, in Rotterdam, he met a strong Cape Verdean community, composed music alongside them and gave birth to one of the greatest albums of African music: Angola 72. Bonga has now become an African music icon.

Kordz The term Ending Pad stands for an end point or a transitional space. rDepending on the context, it can mean the conclusion or the bridge to a new phase. Whether in games, narratives or systems - it marks the moment when one phase ends and a new one possibly begins. In this sense, the title Ending Pad stands for the fact that an end is also a beginning. The pieces played are not self-contained, but merge into one another - like parts of a chain. They mark transitions, but do not close themselves off definitively, but open up new spaces. The material used was originally intended for something else and had been lying around on the hard drive as a sketch for years until the right moment ... Nevertheless, there is an end point: the concert marks the conclusion of the interdisciplinary cultural festival Brücke: Zurich-Tbilisi, which offers a wide range of exchange opportunities between the Georgian and Swiss art scenes and brings all participants and guests together in one space. The Zurich ensemble Kiosk forms the core of the project, supported by the two remarkable Georgian musicians Anushka Chkeidze and Alexandre Kordzaia (aka Kordz) as well as the Zurich percussionist Christian Wolfarth.rrWith music by protagonists from the most diverse styles, genres and generations of the Georgian music scene, including Russudan Meipariani, Ioseb Kechakhmadze, Alexandre Kordzaia, Anushka Chkeidze, Nika Machaidze and others. The concert was realized in cooperation with the Association “Georgische Kulturplattform”. The interdisciplinary cultural festival “Brücke: Zurich-Tbilisi” presents the current art and cultural scene in Georgia and deepens the cultural dialog between Switzerland and Georgia. Pianist, singer and composer Maud Paquis has a voice that takes jazz into unexplored realms where legends and magic merge. With her quintet, she presents her new album Circé. Inspired by the myth of Pygmalion, the persecution of witches, the creation of the universe and the mysterious flight of seagulls, she invites us on a journey between reality and hidden dreams. In addition to winning the Audience Award of the ZKB Jazz Prize 2024 at Moods, Maud Paquis has also performed on many important jazz stages in Switzerland, including the Cully Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz and the Langnau Jazz Nights. She has also performed on renowned pop stages such as Les Docks, Fri-Son, Balélec and a concert at La Première.

Tomorrow Tribal&#x27; stands for playing, for risk, for immediacy - and at the same time for maximum precision. Lucas Niggli&#x27;s commissioned work for the Tomorrow Tribal Quartet, which includes himself on drums as well as Brian Archinal (no-input mixer, vibraphone, megaphone, percussion), Gilles Grimaître (piano, Korg organ) and Sascha Armbruster (soprano saxophone, tubax), is based on a set of 16 playing cards that dictate the dramaturgy of the music. Each card depicts a specific musical motif, inspired by the four musicians playing together and by unique expressions in different, sometimes obscure, languages. Lagom&quot; (Swedish for &quot;not too much and not too little, just right&quot;), &quot;Ukiyo&quot; (Japanese for &quot;living in the moment&quot;) or &quot;Kephaloporosis&quot; (ancient Greek for a usually temporary state of mental confusion after intense stress) head the motif cards; these are terms that have no literal translation - they are as unique as the four musicians&#x27; musical languages. Each member of the quartet has all 16 cards and can play each one once. There is a playing table in the middle of the Boiler Room. When a new card is played, the other musicians can decide whether to jump straight to the new motif, &#x27;morph&#x27; from the old to the new, or not react at all. The piece thrives on spontaneous, intuitive musical action, so every performance will be unique. Only the groovy, melodic final canon, which the quartet will enter just before the end of the 45-minute performance, has been composed. Tomorrow Tribal will be an explosive and playful musical frenzy, full of surprises - and the odd joker will be thrown in for good measure.

Wolfgang Muthspiel TOUCH feat. Linda May Han Oh & Lionel Loueke

In his latest project, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel invites two outstanding musical personalities to work together: Linda May Han Oh, bassist from Australia, and Lionel Loueke from Benin, Africa. Three different musical colors, three continents, three players who are formative on their instruments unite in a concert program that captivates on the one hand with virtuosity and rhythmic power, and on the other hand opens up a wide space in which the protagonists meet in an improvised trialogue. The three musicians are known from jazz contexts: Linda May Han Oh played bass in Pat Metheny&#x27;s quartet for many years and has earned an excellent reputation as the leader of her own projects. Lionel Loueke, on the other hand, is a key member of Herbie Hancock&#x27;s band and has added his own unique expression to the guitar in his own trio and solo projects. Wolfgang Muthspiel, whose past four releases have appeared on the ECM label, explores another facet of his work in this new project. What the three musicians have in common, as different as they are, is, among other things, the quality of tone that gives the project its title: the touch. When musicians can be recognized by a single note, based solely on their sound, then they have found their own voice. After an initial rehearsal and recording phase in May 2023, TOUCH will be heard on Europe&#x27;s concert stages for the first time in Spring 2025.

From moonlit ballads to funky workouts to the most cerebral post-bop, the Detroit-born saxophone master can seem to deliver all jazz history in a single set. Even when he appears on the verge of shattering his horn, overblowing rapid-fire lines to otherworldly effect, he&#x27;s evoking early jazz, jump blues, the avant-garde and other lessons residing inside his vast, scholarly knowledge of the music of the African-American experience.

Hans Koch is a big name in independent and improvised music. Whether in ensembles such as the Barry Guy New Orchestra and the Ensemble d`Improvisateurs Européens, or as a soloist, complemented by electronics, samplings and computers, Hans Koch has made a name for himself as one of the most innovative improvising woodwind players in Europe. He has shared the stage with prominent musicians such as Cecil Taylor and Fred Frith, shaped the sound of the internationally renowned Koch-Schütz-Studer Trio and composed music for radio plays and films.

The story of the Big Bear began in the legendary Club &quot;Bazillus&quot; in 2011, from where it first moved to the &quot;Klubi&quot; and then to the &quot;Institute&quot;. At each location, the Big Bear organized a concert almost every month with the musicians of the Bär Kollektiv. In this way, the Big Bear has become a big institution, a big band, or rather an open cosmos that offers a refuge to many musicians from different backgrounds. Here, old hands meet young vixens, who can always learn from each other in both directions. Answers are found where the question has not yet been asked. This makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Ed Partyka and Theo Bleckmann have worked together on several projects in Germany and Finland since 2007, and as Theo is the new jazz vocal teacher at the ZHDK, a collaboration with the ZJO was but a matter of time. Originally this was supposed to happen last season, but unfortunate circumstances made a postponement necessary. Ed Partyka will arrange Theo&#x27;s own compositions as well as a broad repertoire ranging from jazz standards to songs by Kate Bush for Theo&#x27;s unique voice and combine them with the many interesting instrumental textures and timbres of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. A very special vocal jazz concert. Theo Bleckmann is a multiple GRAMMY®-nominated singer, composer and ECM recording artist who has recorded more than 17 albums and collaborated with artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Sheila Jordan, Kneebody, Ben Monder, John Hollenbeck, Phil Kline, David Lang, Ulysses Owens, Bang on a Can All-Stars and, most notably, Meredith Monk since 1994. Bleckmann was interviewed by Terry Gross on the NPR program Fresh Air and appeared on the David Letterman Show with Laurie Anderson. He consistently tops the DownBeat polls, and in his home country of Germany he was awarded the prestigious JAZZ ECHO by the German Phono Academy.

Anouar Kaddour Chérif - El Mizan

El Mizan, translated as &quot;the balance&quot; in Arabic, symbolizes equilibrium and harmony, evoking a fluidity in movement. Initiated by Algerian composer Anouar Kaddour Chérif, El Mizan explores &quot;Magh-rock,&quot; a psychedelic folk fusion of captivating rhythms infused with Algerian chaabi and experimental music. The lyrics, in Darija, a Maghreb dialect, celebrate freedom, the aspirations of new generations, and the melancholy of exile, all expressed with a musical fervor transcending borders. Through its debut album, &quot;Harba&quot; (&quot;the escape&quot;), El Mizan evokes popular memories and infectious rhythms, blending scales and ideals without concern for geographical boundaries, forging connections between the East and the West. Inspired by the diverse cultural mix of its members, El Mizan creates contemporary sounds, delivering a pronounced rock sound punctuated by elegant vocal harmonies. This unique cultural fusion radiates immense energy, celebrating the wisdom of the elders and the passionate dreams of new generations.

Melting Steine are multi-instrumentalists and producers Martin Schenker and Luzius Schuler as well as keyboard player and bassist Dshamilja Kalt. Their nostalgic, warm instrumental music combines elements of jazz, bossa and psychedelic synthesizer music and sounds like the soundtrack to your dream island in the Mediterranean Sea. Their incomparable sound is created in a garage in the middle of Switzerland, where they record their compositions on an old Tascam tape machine with guitar, drum machines, flute and analog synthesizer. Lots of chorus, tape delay, vibrato, spring reverb and the warmth of analog recording technology give the music a psychedelic touch and you can hear the musical influences of the 60s and 70s. This is carefully crafted mood music that is sophisticated but has catchy melodies and unique sounds that have earworm potential.

Anna Erhard tackles the big issues with small words. With a trained eye and surgical precision, she dissects the thematic world of a thirtysomething and relentlessly presses where it hurts. On her recently released third album Botanical Garden, Erhard explores the boundaries between classic song structures and associative writing with sparkling imagination and a keen sense for everyday curiosities. While the music on Botanical Garden sounds somewhat more accessible than on Campsite, the lyrics also seem freer and more direct. Anna Erhard is larger than life - despite, or perhaps because of, her height of exactly 1.70 m. GDS.FM (Zurich&#x27;s radio against the current) is an independent and ad-free platform for music creators. We are committed to making local cultural diversity accessible on the radio. For ten years, we have been organizing our own concert series and club nights in various locations and broadcasting live from festivals and events of all kinds. ... combine the fresh energy of the young guard with the experience and expertise of musicians who have been shaking up the scene for some time. The two bandleaders and composers Sebastian Strinning and Lino Blöchlinger met at the Lucerne School of Music and began their musical collaboration as a duo in 2015, soon joined by Roberto Domeniconi, Urban Lienert and Reto Eisenring. The result is a music of solid and transparent constructions, a mixture of avant-rock and jazz - music full of energy and enthusiasm. Their second album &quot;Panda Bounce&quot; has just been released in 2024.

Jan Schlegel Solo

Jan Schlegel is a real father figure among improvising electric bassists in this country. Originally successful in experimental rock, he slipped seamlessly into the experimental jazz scene around Urs Blöchlinger and into his &quot;Legfek Trio&quot; with Peter Landis. Today, he continues to amaze musicians with his wealth of ideas and ever-changing sounds, as well as his unerring sense of form and time. The electric bassist is an accomplished jack-of-all-trades in jazz and free improvisation, working with Gabriela Friedli, Co Streiff, Dieter Ulrich, Omri Ziegele and Dieter Ulrich, among others. Always in search of sound, he manipulates his bass with rocks, staples, and other objects - whether in composed music, improvisation, or somewhere in between.

Pianist Roberto Domeniconi is a sensitive, visionary inventor who opens up new horizons with every note. Together with Christian Weber on bass, whose multifaceted playing ties the form of the music together, and percussionist Emanuel Künzi, whose delicate agility and dancing groove bring the compositions to life, they complement each other to form a trio. Their music is an adventure, a story of friendship, tradition and discovery, deeply rooted in the history of jazz and pointing to the immediate future. Together they weave a sonic narrative that evokes both images and emotions, transporting their listeners into a pleasant weightlessness.

&quot;Free improvisation at its best&quot; is what Swiss guitarist Flo Stoffner embodies in a unique way. His way of playing and deconstructing the guitar is unmistakable and unique and has been described as &quot;some kind of autopsy of the guitar sound&quot;. Solo or in collaboration with musicians such as John Butcher, Chris Corsano, Paul Lovens, Rudi Mahall, Albert Cirera and Hans Koch, but also with spoken word artist Anna Frey or with Anna &amp; Stoffner, he has become one of the outstanding figures of the European improvisation scene. Looking back as well as forward, he raises the banner of instant composing and proves again and again how alive, surprising and up-to-date the tradition of free improvisation is today.

Two musicians invent a new state of intoxication: no drugs, just drums, organ and electric guitar. Valeria Zangger, Dominik Blum and Dave Gisler leave times and styles behind when they create their music. Motifs, essences and quotations are taken from the pool of rock, pop and their own musical worlds and catapulted into new dimensions through improvisation. The result can be a cross between Pink Floyd and free jazz, or a noise prayer with Jimi Hendrix and Arnold Schoenberg. This trio was initiated by drummer Fredy Studer, who died unexpectedly in August 2022. Valeria Zangger is now on board, with a stylistic spectrum ranging from pop music to experimental and free improvisation. The interweaving of the most diverse musical hallucinations characterises the trio and is the chemical formula for their explosive fuel. What they have in common is the desire to create energetic sound processes inspired by the history of rock and jazz, which vibrate atmospherically in the free play of encounters and can grow into powerful vibrations.
