Adrian's concert tips in December

To find the energy to go to concerts in the run-up to Christmas, you have to have very good arguments. Here are seven:

Monday, 2. December: Nils Petter Molvær: A Solo Tribute to the Film «Misty»
People who happen to have listened to jazz before will certainly know the song Misty. And people who have studied jazz a little more will know that the song was written by Erroll Garner. The movie “Misty” deals with the question of who this man from Pittsburgh was. Before the film is released in cinemas, it will be shown at Moods. Also there: Nils Petter Molvaer, who is responsible for the soundtrack and will play a solo concert afterwards.
Tuesday, 03. December: DakhaBrakha
Bringing DakhaBrakha to Zurich for the first time was my intention when I started booking at Moods. Not so easy, it turns out: After appearances at Glastonbury and Sziget Festival, in the Elbphilharmonie, (here you can imagine all the impressive venue and festival names that come to mind), their schedule is relatively full. After more than a year of waiting, the time has finally come: clear the stage for the ethno chaos from Ukraine! (Attention, only a few tickets left!)
Saturday, 07. December: Kyoto Jazz Massive ft. Vanessa Freeman & Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra
Last year, around the same time, the Kyoto Jazz Massive was a guest at Moods and it was absolutely fantastic! To celebrate their 30th anniversary, there's a new album with a refreshed line-up. The unique crossover vision of driving jazz-funk, broken beat, soulful house, cosmic grooves and everything in between has remained the same.
Sunday, 08. December: Marc Copland Solo & Dado Moroni Trio
A concert by piano luminary Dado Moroni together with Heiri Känzig on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums is actually reason enough to stand in front of the Moods entrance on December 8 at 5.59 pm to secure the best spot (which would be in the middle, right in front of the mixing desk). But I can give you two more good reasons:

1. Marc Copland, this sensitive pianist with the perfect blend of sensuality, sensitivity and rationality, plays a solo set beforehand.

2. The «Swiss Radio Days» series from the TCB Music label (also known as «The Montreux Jazz Label») is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The albums are compiled from Swiss radio archives and feature such humble personalities as Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, Lester Young, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald and all the other names you might know even if you've never listened to music in your life. The event will be celebrated with the release of two new albums by the performing artists themselves.
Thursday, 12. December: Lakiko Solo
Influences from Bosnian music mingle with elements of classical music, breathy pop vocals with contemporary spoken word, driving beats with almost endless glissandi loops, and the haunting sound of the cello in between. Lakiko reprograms your eyes and ears and lets a non-existent movie play in front of your mind's eye. And when the spectacle is over, you will go home with a feeling of bittersweet melancholy.
Freitag, 20. Dezember: Orange Radio Album Release «Through the Dust»
Never heard of Orange Radio? Neither had I until recently. But the band members are old acquaintances from the Zurich/Swiss music scene: Vojko Huter (District5), Florian Egli (Weird Beard), Farida Hamdar (Den Dala) and Rico Baumann (Michael Fehr & Rico). And they have released a fantastic series of singles: strong riffs, earthy grooves, down-to-earth sounds and heartfelt melodies. Trip mode activated!
Sonntag, 22. Dezember & Montag, 23. Dezember: Raphael Jost's Swingin' Christmas
You can like Christmas or not, somehow I understand both sides (keywords: conviviality/contemplation/candles vs. commerce/stress/drunk uncle). Anyone leaning towards the pro side must (!) go to Swingin' Christmas: Raphael Jost has been presenting the greatest Christmas classics with a fantastic band for over 10 years. «Let it Snow!», «Winter Wonderland» or «Santa Claus Is Coming To Town» and what they are all called. All the songs that run in an endless loop from mid-November (if you like Christmas, of course).
