The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam offers an important platform for the Swiss jazz jam scene. After the musical opening of the jam band, lively and exciting sound conversations begin between musicians who spontaneously meet on stage, reflecting the diversity of jazz in all its facets. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam is supported by the non-profit association JazzBaragge. There is no presale for JazzBaragge, only box office.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Dave Taylor & Daniel Schnyder

Dave Taylor has been the world&#x27;s most influential bass trombonist since he emerged on the New York music scene in the late 1960s. His unmistakable bass trombone sound can be heard on hundreds of albums, including recordings by Duke Ellington, The Rolling Stones, Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Blood Sweat &amp; Tears, Tina Turner, Gil Evans, Bob Mintzer Big Band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Dave has also performed worldwide as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and encourages composers to write new and challenging music for the bass trombone. One musician who has a long and close artistic partnership with Dave is the Swiss composer and saxophonist Daniel Schynder, who will contribute a set for this concert and also perform as a soloist. For the conductor of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Ed Partyka, this project fulfills a long-cherished wish: Dave Taylor has been an idol of mine since I met him in the 1980s when he played with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band (still one of the most impressive live concerts I&#x27;ve ever heard!). I&#x27;m thrilled that we can finally realize this dream with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. The second set will be newly composed by Ed Partyka and arranged for Dave Taylor and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra.

Camilla George is a visionary saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator. Her strong cultural roots and love of fusing African and Western Music has informed her own unique style, a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene, alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is a hypnotising blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz, with a politically minded subtext that has a powerful connection to her Nigerian identity, lineage and heritage, reflecting African history, culture and slavery. Her most recent album, ‘Ibio Ibio’, is a tribute to her tribe the Ibibio people of South Eastern Coastal Nigeria. The album features an incredible lineup, including Daniel Casimir, Sarah Tandy, Winton Clifford, Renato Paris, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Rosie Turton, Shirley Tetteh, hip hop drummer, Daru Jones, Birmingham based rapper, Lady Sanity and Sam Jones. Recent notable performances include North Sea Jazz Festival, where Camilla performed with both her own group and as a featured artist in the ‘Diaspora Suite’ performance; Jazz a Vienne, where Camilla also sat in for a guest spot with Marcus Miller; EFG London Jazz Festival, Jazz In The Park Romania, Brosella and Jazz Onze Lausanne.

Caroline Davis is a creative epicenter from the Brooklyn jazz scene and is one of the most imaginative saxophonists with her surprising range of activities. Her active projects include the jazz-inspired band Portals, the experimental R&amp;B project My Tree and the protest band Alula. Acclaimed by international critics, the saxophonist works in a variety of creative contexts, each creating a unique sound world in which free improvisation and composition are harmonized. On this evening exclusively together with the singer Cansu Tanrýkulu, who is a unique storyteller with her chameleon-like vocals, the living legend Jim Black, whose boundless musical vocabulary and inventive artistry never ceases to amaze, and Elias Stemeseder, a musician of remarkable skill, flair and imagination, whose diverse playing ranges from song-oriented to contemporary classical pieces to electronic music. A composer and her sonic workshop: Together with her nine fellow musicians, Swiss composer and pianist Luzia von Wyl experiments until sparks fly. They create virtuoso music that not only stretches the boundaries of jazz, but sometimes even goes beyond them - the line-up alone with piano, marimba, percussion, strings and several woodwinds goes far beyond a traditional jazz formation. Lyrical, originally orchestrated soundscapes alternate with solid grooves, intricate rhythms meet wide-ranging melody lines - and Luzia von Wyl&#x27;s compositions repeatedly open up scopes for improvisation. “The Swiss composer has her very own signature style - so convincing, captivating and delightful that comparisons are superfluous,” writes the German magazine Jazzthetik. “Von Wyl&#x27;s compositions are a thing of impish joy throughout!” praises The Guardian and the Luzerner Zeitung reports: ”Airy sound, brilliant virtuosity, minimalist elements and a very special groove: Luzia von Wyl&#x27;s sheer inexhaustible inventiveness pulsates through all the pieces. That is great art.” The Luzia von Wyl Ensemble will be bringing their latest album “Frakmont” with them, which is inspired by the Swiss mountains. Founded in Geneva in 2006 by double bass player Vincent Bertholet, OTPMD takes its cue from the great African groups of the 20th century, such as the Tout Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, and tips its hat to the revolutionary French artist Marcel Duchamp. Their sixth album &#x27;Venre Unique&#x27; will be released in November 2024 on the Geneva label Bongo Joe Records. We&#x27;re looking forward to what&#x27;s to come!

Sahra Halgan comes from Somaliland, an autonomous region in the north of Somalia, which for years has campaigned for recognition as an independent state. She is considered as a music icon in her country, which she had to leave in 1992 due to the civil unrest. Her wish is to globally support the Somaliland people in the Diaspora. With astonishing ease, her expressive voice conveys a life full of homesickness, memories, and grief in exile. The Erroll Garner Story

A themed evening around the film «Misty» about the great pianist Erroll Garner: even before the film is shown in cinemas, a kind of preview will take place at Moods. After an introduction and a discussion with director Georges Gachot, there will be an insight into the film followed by a solo concert by trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, who composed the soundtrack for the film. The Film: The American pianist Erroll Garner (1921 - 1977) changed jazz forever: His piece Misty, which he allegedly composed between two concerts on an aeroplane, immediately became one of the great jazz standards and is still one of the most covered ballads in the world today. Who was the man behind the ever-friendly smile from the ghettos of Pittsburgh, whose talent brought him to the biggest international stages? The premiere of the film will take place on 3 December at the Riff Raff cinema, the official cinema release date is 26 December. The solo set by Nils Petter Molvær: Nils Petter Molvær is considered a pioneer of electronic jazz - his sound is a unique blend of jazz, electronic and ambient that explores the boundaries of what is possible with trumpet and electronic music. On this evening, Molvær will play a solo set that pays homage to the film «Misty» , for which he composed the soundtrack.

Jonas Ruther invited the collective MADAM, consisting of Marco Mercuzio Peron and Mara Miccichè, to stage the club space. MADAM is a collaborative platform for site-specific happenings and productions, curating interdisciplinary formats such as &#x27;Il Circolo del Frattempo&#x27;, as well as soundtracks and sound design for film and installations. In 2024 they curated the world premiere of &#x27;CASCADE&#x27;, a new composition by Terry Riley and Gyan Riley, as part of the curatorship for the &#x27;Bäderkultur&#x27; project in Baden.

In Memoriam Fredy Studer

From 1972 to 1982, OM were one of the great improvising jazz-rock bands in Europe. Polyrhythmic thickets or deep cosmic space: &#x27;Electric Jazz Free Music&#x27; was the powerful label of those years. After a 25-year break, Christy Doran, Urs Leimgruber, Bobby Burri and Fredy Studer reunited as OM for the first time in 2006 at the KKL Luzern: with unbroken vitality, rich in new experiences, but also more subtle and fierce than ever. Two years ago, shortly before the band&#x27;s 50th anniversary, drummer Fredy Studer died unexpectedly. The anniversary became In Memoriam Fredy Studer. Gerry Hemingway and Tony Buck play in his place. In &#x27;Fragmente&#x27;, sound and rhythmic material from recent years - in the form of minimal fragments - form the basis of their new works. The improvisation of jazz, the energy of rock, contemporary sounds, noise and electronic sounds are mixed into the new OM texture, which never loses sight of its original vision. The music of the Zurich trio Heinz Herbert is urban, sometimes hectic, and yet leaves room to breathe. They let themselves be seduced by sounds, jump on the patterns of drum machines and drift off into spheres of minimal music and industrial jazz. The equality of all sounds magically attracts us - the quiet, the inharmonic, the harmonic, the zooming in and out, field recordings, 4/4, polyrhythms, &#x27;in sync - out of sync&#x27;. We try to give equal importance to each of these sounds, ideas or concepts to create music that is often structured in non-traditional ways,&quot; the trio said in an interview with Luke Fowler. Released in February 2024, «Tomorrow Wonderland» is the Swiss band&#x27;s fifth album. Two years in the making, it is the result of over 12 years of living and working together and is a thrilling, ever-evolving and unique journey with strange harmonies, elegant microtimings and intense colour tones.

In 2024 we will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sarah Vaughan, one of the greatest jazz singers in history. Her career spanned almost five decades and she performed with a wide range of top jazz musicians and big bands. She won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for nine. In 1989 she was named an NEA Jazz Master and critic Scott Yanow wrote that she was &#x27;...one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century&#x27;. Sarah Vaughan began her professional career in the early 1940s as a singer in the big bands of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine, where she met and sang with such jazz innovators as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. For most of her highly successful career she played in small jazz groups, but she returned to big bands on several occasions and in 1954 began a fruitful artistic partnership with Count Basie that lasted for decades. The last album Sarah Vaughan recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra was &#x27;Send In The Clowns&#x27; in 1981, and Sandy Patton has preserved the Count Basie Orchestra&#x27;s original arrangements, which she has generously shared with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. These original arrangements will form the core of the programme, and we will play some classic Count Basie instrumentals to complement the wonderfully swinging vocal charts. As always, the great ensemble playing and excellent soloists of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will be featured.

Los Dos En Gros, Tischhauser&#x27;s extended exhibition, drums into the mangrove forest - the rhythms disappear, vanish and never emerge from the quicksand holes. Unstoppable drums are aimed at the dancing legs. The piranhas hide trembling in the mud, the tapir family gallops into the undergrowth in search of shelter, the alligators lurk but don&#x27;t move when the swamp blues roller rattles along. Only high up in the treetops do the tamarin monkeys dance and scream wildly to the octet&#x27;s driving beat. The hummingbird hums softly, the jaguar hunts deadly, the mamba sways to the mambo, the orang-utan has a hat on. The assembled silverbacks are back, cooking in old pots. It smells of gumbo, jambalaya, beans and rice. Los Dos Engros is the melting pot of all kinds of formations around Zurich shouter, howler and guitar crooner Han Sue Lee Tischhauser. Swamp blues, zydecco twist, Hawaiian garage, waltz punk are just a few style drawers that serve as humus to reinvent their own music again and again. The same procedure as every year: the SoulVision Allstars are back with their James Brown Tribute Show! Since 2007 - shortly after James Brown left us for the big stage - this top-notch band of Swiss musicians has ensured that the works of the «Godfather of Soul» are not forgotten. Building on the hits and lesser-known pearls, and with boundless energy on stage, the band delivers a powerful mix of Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop. An evening not only for nostalgics and dyed-in-the-wool Funksters, but also generally for all of those who want to get those hips a-shaking to swing in the New Year.

Erb/Mayas/Hemingway Trio

Originally a live performance at Neubad Luzern, Erb, Mayas &amp; Hemingway&#x27;s long improvisation resulted in their latest record, Hour Music. This type of improvisation is of a sometimes ritualistic nature, mostly evolving across the twilight of rationality. The manifestation of this spiritual bond enhances the initiatives of pure creation that animate, even individually, the three traveling companions. Clearly, there is no necessity to raise one’s voice in order to be understood by equal interlocutors; the reciprocal consideration with which Erb, Mayas and Hemingway articulate the conversation substantiates this argument. Ultimately, they can be compared to a responsive stringed instrument played by the bow of intersubjective sympathy. It may require some patience, even dedication to let one&#x27;s ears grasp and invite the music to be enjoyed. Yet once that happens, we enter the trio&#x27;s universe.

Under the name Schrödingers Katze, Simon Althaus and Manuel Pasquinelli - two musical border crossers without stylistic blinkers - play science fiction pop for a lost but somehow still beautiful world. And so the band will take us on a playful, atmospheric and above all groovy musical journey from which there is no escape.

Stucky – Doran – Tacuma: Spacecake

Erika Stucky sees clear parallels between a live concert and a bank robbery! Really? Yes! It&#x27;s about a coup. Every time it has to be prepared precisely, the right accomplices have to be found so that the element of surprise succeeds. Into the concert hall - a performance at full throttle and with the power of persuasion - off on the bus - back to home base. She needs specialists for such a musical adventure: A pyrotechnician, a code breaker, a driver, a ticket reader. In other words, a team that understands each other perfectly every second and harmonizes precisely with each other. With “Spacecake”, Stucky has gathered two of her oldest accomplices around her again. For a good two decades, she has repeatedly relied on the outstanding qualities of Christy Doran and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, internationally recognized masters of their craft. Christy is known as a guitarist who completely absorbed the Jimi Hendrix magic at a very young age without losing his own musical personality and style. Few can do that. And Jamaaladeen received his accolades in the band of the legendary Ornette Coleman. A giant on the bass. What new ideas, tricks and feats this familiar trio will come up with this time, of course, remains a mystery for the time being. Likewise, which musical favorites from recent years will be revived. One thing is certain: Erika tells of dragonflies, hippie poetry, Big Sur and Marfa. This coup will undoubtedly succeed. And instead of gold bars, hearts will be stolen. Peacefully and purely acoustically, of course. Come unarmed.

Zimmermann x Troller

Tizia Zimmermann

Zurich accordionist Tizia Zimmermann and Lucerne guitarist Manuel Troller have worked together in a variety of contexts and constellations, and as part of Zimmermann&#x27;s Carte Blanche series this will the first time they perform as a duo. Both are interested in the perception and understanding of time, in slowly developing musical material, in long-form improvisation that attempts to suspend time and can patiently expand in all possible directions and depths. Accordion and electric guitar - a combination with which Troller and Zimmermann search for new sonic worlds with their shared fascination for ambiguity, for harmonic fields that generate warmth and are at the same time subtly broken again and again, for fragility as well as power.

Neon Dilemma (Landfermann, Stemeseder, Berger)

Using acoustic and electronic instruments, the three protagonists of jazz-based improvised music develop a discourse on the possibilities of contemporary interplay in historical instrumentation. Concepts and ideas from different geographical and temporal origins are transformed into new organising principles that enable the ensemble to harmonise seemingly disparate musical elements. Delicate counterpoint and prancing polyrhythms sound effortlessly alongside raw towers of sound, vehement chord clusters and simple vocalism.

Božo Vrećo is an artist who breathes Sevdah, experiences it in a lively way, reinterprets it and embodies it. With the unmistakable voice of a lyrical tenor, he presents an impressive melange of duality, freedom, courage and love. International media such as El Periódico and the New York Times praise him as an avant-garde artist with a global voice who has become a symbol of freedom in the Balkans. They describe his voice as a voice that touches souls and opens wounded hearts. His concerts are an emotional catharsis and the embodiment of love, where he enchants his listeners with the song of an angel. This year sees the release of his seventh studio album Sevdahology. His first documentary film Maldita, produced in Spain and directed by Kanaki Film, won the prestigious Goya Award for best documentary film at the festival. Božo Vrećo is currently working on a book and touring festivals in the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and the Balkan region.

On his second Carte Blanche-evening, Jonas Ruther invites you to an interdisciplinary ‘deep dive’ in the Walcheturm with like-minded artists, in which music, text, acting and spatial design will transform time and space. A strong hui-gan is guaranteed. To operate in a continuous breath. The conversational and frictional breath of the collective. The more introspective one of individual and inner breathing. In all cases, to be one with the original drone of a world that we continue to survey, even when our cosmopolitan peregrinations are thwarted. The first lightning rod of the Lake Geneva collective L&#x27;Orage, Ganesh is also know for his thrillling solo performances with his albums ‘Wuji’ (Vinayaka, 2022) and ‘1:15:40’ (Vinayaka, 2022). Saxophone strapped to his backpack or to the memories archived on his Laptop, Ganesh Geymeier is sometimes Coltrane (Alice and John), sometimes Lomax (Alan) and Bowles (Paul), sometimes Parker (Charlie or Evan). Anna Papst has been working as an author of documentary theatre plays for around ten years. Since she invented the ‘reportage’ format for theatre in 2015, well over a hundred people have told her their stories. With her recording device, Anna Papst has sat opposite surrogate mothers, criminals, cyborgs and victims of violence, among others. Anna Papst condenses the recorded conversations into new texts, which she brings to the stage with actors as ‘enacted oral history’. In other words, a performance of various eyewitness accounts in which the eyewitnesses not only talk about the past, but also about the here and now. Anna Papst has already worked with the actress Chantal LeMoign on two projects. For this evening, she will restage a text from the documentary theatre piece ‘Da Da Da’, which deals with the connection between memory and music, for the Walcheturm. In Jonas Ruther&#x27;s world, music is a form of communication based on the concept of deep listening. His playing follows less formatted rhythms or predetermined dramaturgy; he is much more concerned with flow, the direct transfer of energy - both kinetic and subtle - and the creation of synergetic connections with the other players and the audience. The separation between the musicians and the audience can and will dissolve. Synergy. Flow. Ruther describes the effect of his music as the experience of a deep Pu&#x27;er tea, in which the essence does not cling to the sensory perception. In Chinese, it is called hui-gan or ‘returning sweetness’: the subtle, persistent feeling that lingers and reverberates in the body. divr, a trio consisting of Philipp Eden, Raphael Walser and Jonas Ruther, is a post-jazz piano trio with a pop sensibility. Their sampling-inspired improvisations and electro-acoustic soundscapes unfold a magical pull - composed in real time and allowing the strengths and idiosyncrasies of each individual player to shine through. Jonas Ruther invited the collective MADAM, consisting of Marco Mercuzio Peron and Mara Miccichè, to design the space and the stages. MADAM is a collaborative platform for site-specific happenings and productions, curating interdisciplinary formats such as &#x27;Il Circolo del Frattempo&#x27;, as well as soundtracks and sound design for film and installations. In 2024 they curated the world premiere of &#x27;CASCADE&#x27;, a new composition by Terry Riley and Gyan Riley, as part of the curatorship for the &#x27;Bäderkultur&#x27; project in Baden. The Zawose Queens

Flowing polyrhythms and the rapturous polyphonic singing of the Gogo people (also known as Wagogo) from central Tanzania: this is the music of Pendo and Leah Zawose, better known as The Zawose Queens. The most famous representative of this musical tradition is Hukwe Zawose (Pendo&#x27;s father and Leah&#x27;s grandfather), who died in 2004. With Maisha, their highly acclaimed debut album, women from this famous musical family take their place as lead singers and interpreters for the first time. There is spirit and fire in their music. There are the vibrations of the ancestors that can be heard on traditional instruments - the soaring chizeze fiddle, the humming thumb piano, the clattering ngoma drums - and the voices. There is a connection to nature and rituals; a mixture of the organic, the harmonic and modern electronics. The lyrics, in their mother tongue Kigogo, tell of their passion for music, of the wonders of life, of pride in the environment, in tradition and their East African roots.

The Afrobeats scene has virtually exploded in recent years, which is also reflected in the lively party scene that has developed around this genre. At the forefront from the beginning: &quot;Afrobeats Explosion&quot; at Moods. From its origins with Fela Kuti in the 70s to Wizkid – get ready for a special kind of dance explosion!

Together in Sound is a new event in collaboration with Brandy Butler that invites music enthusiasts to explore and appreciate the artistry of albums in a communal setting, offering a rare opportunity for focused, intentional listening. Each session a featured guest will present their favorite album, offering a personal introduction that delves into the significance of their selection. Following the introduction, attendees will listen to the full album recording together, uninterrupted, in an atmosphere that encourages deep engagement with the art of listening. Together in Sound offers a thoughtful and reflective way to start a Sunday morning, blending music appreciation with community interaction. The guest of this edition will be Corinne Mauch.

Moes Anthill has arrived at the source of her inspiration and creates wonderfully harmonious American folk songs that could not be more timeless and unique. Her delight serves both self-searching and contrast, freezing and warming the audience at the same time. Like a mountainous panorama of soft, rhythmic silhouettes, images unfold around Mario Moe Schelbert&#x27;s voice and guitar weaves, rising into the air like cacti, only to remain embedded deep underground and take root. Moes Anthill celebrates lightness and reveals her most honest, intimate skin as well as an insight into her latest alternative folk album Easy Win. An evening for fans of Wilco, Eels, Big Thief, Bright Eyes, Andrew Bird, Andy Shauf or Elliott Smith.

Fish'n'Ships

Fish&#x27;n&#x27;Ships – Michael Cina, Cyrill Ferrari and Alvin Schwaar – describe a world full of contrasts. Their music is about extinct fish species, sunken cargo ships and oil tankers, but also about the faint hope that we can still change the world for the better. With a wide range of sounds and different compositional approaches, the result is a listening experience that ranges from intimate to explosive, from chaos to clear groove, from man to nature and back again.
