The Brazilian composer, producer, songwriter and musician belongs to the second generation of bossa nova and his 1998 album Nova Bossa Nova became a model for Brazilian electro and contemporary Brazilian jazz. Look forward to a danceable concert full of Brazilian rhythms, from samba and bossa nova to psychedelic Música Popular Brasileria, enriched with jazz improvisations, funk and disco rhythms. One man, one guitar, one string: that&#x27;s enough for the Jamaican singer to create an entire musical universe. Since his portraits in the award-winning film documentaries RiseUp and The King of One String, thousands of amazed listeners have succumbed to the charm of his songs; whether he is performing unplugged at a market in Jamaica, at New Orleans &amp; Heritage or at Global Fest in New York in front of a large audience. With a unique personality and his raw yet grandiose style, he immediately captivates the audience and skillfully uses his charismatic baritone voice combined with hypnotic, bouncy grooves on his one-string acoustic guitar.

Konkolo Orchestra

The Konkolo Orchestra is a Zurich-based band centred around multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Alexis Malefakis. Their debut single «Blue G» (2022) was already a hit, now the album «Future Pasts» (2024) follows, a collection of funky to jazzy Afrobeat and highlife songs. An exuberant atmosphere and dancing mood are guaranteed when the Konkolo Orchestra performs in front of the audience with its light-hearted lyrics, cheerful melodies and a powerful brass section. This concert is free of charge, but admission is only guaranteed with a valid reservation.

He has been collecting music for a long time - almost pathologically, in fact. With GDS.FM, he has now found a way to make his collection accessible. For his radio program he puts together suitable playlists for everyday living; in the live shows he invites guests and presents his latest discoveries; and in clubs and bars or at festivals he finally mixes his favorites live on the turntables. We are delighted that he will be doing the latter together with Maurice at the Schiffbau Fest! Maurice has been roaming Zurich&#x27;s alternative music scene for some time now as a DJ (Dust Surfers, Tropical Continent Soundsystem, King Clementine) and organizer (Helsinki, Stall 6, Theater Spektakel, Alors Festival). Of course, his DJ sets are danceable, but just as challenging and surprising. Genre designations are unimportant, the only thing that counts is telling a musical journey in an original way and with a wink.

Oscar &#x27;SHOLTO&#x27; Robertson is a London-based drummer, producer and composer. Having grown up with a fondness for jazz, soul, krautrock and the soundtracks of the 60s and 70s, SHOLTO lets these influences shine through in his debut EP «The Changing Tides Of Dream». With a warm sound palette, analog instrumental grooves and euphoric sentimentality, he conjures up pieces full of nostalgia and longing; music that is about how our lives and our selves, never fully formed and satisfied, are constantly changing, learning and growing.

ZKB Jazzpreis Festival 2024

For over twenty years, Zürcher Kantonalbank has been supporting young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazzpreis at Moods. Winning the prize not only brings financial support, but often also inclusion in the Pro Helvetia Foundation&#x27;s priority jazz promotion programme, giving the band the opportunity to present their music on international stages. The festival is a six-day event full of music and talent. Six nominated bands are given the chance to present themselves to a jury of national and international experts and a broad audience. The bands not only have to impress with their musical quality, but also demonstrate their professionalism and show their development potential.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band

The name says it all: the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays klezmer and adds a pinch of jazz, Balkan or gypsy to the mix. The band started out as a group of street musicians in 1996 and has played countless live shows since then. In February 2024, they released their twentieth album &quot;Bomba Pop&quot;, which was produced by Ulf Lindemann aka Dunkelbunt. The sound on it is as we know it and yet it is so much more: beats that range from dub to hip-hop to dance music also like to sneak in. A danceable journey around the world!

Lyrical melodies and virtuoso solos alternate with groovy passages in wi»ch the band&#x27;s Cuban roots are clearly evident: The seven musicians of El Comité came together in Toulouse in 2017 when they gave an impromptu concert – which was also the starting signal for the formation of the band. The band members had previously played with various big names from the Cuban music scene, such as Issac Delgado and Bueno Vista Social Club. El Comité have since released their second album «Carrousel» (2024), which effortlessly spans the arc from jazz to Cuban groove. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

«Chicago» live vertont vom Satoko Fujii Quartet

IOIC, Misterioso Jazz Club and Moods present:

The movie: Roxy Hart is sexy, jazz-loving and dressed to kill. She has a doting, handsome husband and a gold-digging affair with another man who pays and pays, ultimately with his life. When Roxie is put on trial for murder, she hires a lawyer who is both the mafia&#x27;s mouthpiece and a PR agent. She hits the headlines and the courtroom drama takes its course. This satirical story about sex and murder is an entertaining mixture of humor and melodrama and at the same time a sharp criticism of sleaze journalism. Although Frank Urson was the director, it is essentially the work of Cecil B. DeMille, who apparently felt it inappropriate to take full credit for this cynical and secular story while his religious spectacle THE KING OF KINGS was still in theaters. The music: The film is scored by the Satoko Fujii Quartet with Satoko Fujii on piano, Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, Takemura Hayakawa on electric bass and Tatsuya Yoshida on drums. The quartet reunited last year after a break of 15 years and was enthusiastically received: The rhythm section drives the music forward at breakneck speed, sometimes giving it a rock rather than a boppy feel, or something in between. Fujii&#x27;s compositions are wonderfully complex, with rhythm and tempo changes, long unison lines and brilliantly dense arrangements. Both Fujii and Tamura are in excellent form. This music has a very free character, but the discipline and skill of the four musicians is best shown in the transitions between the improvised and arranged moments.

The singer from the East African country of Malawi has always been a moving storyteller. However, Malia has always changed and developed stylistically. After the Nina Simone album “Black Orchid”, the later “Malawi Blues” and “The Garden of Eve”, her latest album “One Grass Skirt to London”, which focuses on her 8,200-kilometre journey from Malawi to London, is being released this year. This is not only a musical, geographical and temporal journey, but above all a sentimental one - symbolized by new interpretations of selected film music. &quot;Behind each of these songs is either a memory, a personal experience or the feeling of being able to convey a part of myself. La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. An expressive singer who doesn&#x27;t mince her words: Bia Ferreira uses her music to speak out against racism, homophobia and in favour of equality. The lyrics of the Brazilian singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer are direct, in her songs Afro-diasporic rhythms such as soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, reggae and rap meet Brazilian music styles such as samba and repente. The result is a powerful sound that conveys a clear message: No to any form of discrimination and yes to love. In collaboration with Adalu.

Kurt Rosenwinkel's NEXT STEP

Jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has been active on the jazz scene for over 30 years and is one of the most distinguished guitarists of his generation. During his career, he has worked with countless musicians such as Eric Harland, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and many more. Now he is on tour with the original The Next Step band and the album ‘The Next Step: Live at Smalls (1996)’, newly released on Rosenwinkel&#x27;s own label Heartcore Records. On it, he explores the boundaries of jazz with complex harmonies and lyrical melodies.

Bill Laurance Solo

Five-time Grammy winner, pianist and composer Bill Laurance has already travelled a remarkable journey through a wide variety of formations and styles. Originally starting out as a classical pianist, he co-founded the fusion power collective Snarky Puppy and has played with the trip-hop trio Morcheeba as well as with jazz greats such as guitarist Lionel Loueke. And his creative drive still seems unchecked: he has released three albums in the last two years, including the solo album «Affinity» (2022), the duo album «Where you wish you were» with Michael League and most recently «Bloom» (2024) together with the string orchestra The Untold Orchestra. This time, Bill Laurance is coming to Moods solo and you can look forward to a concert full of joyful playing, creativity and improvisation.

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

A soul voice that gives you goosebumps: Big Daddy Wilson casts a special spell on his listeners with his dark baritone. With their unmistakable mix of styles and a live show that makes the moon explode, Hillbilly Moon Explosion captivate the crowd. The combo is led by Swiss-Italian Emanuela Hutter, English singer and slap bassist Oliver Baroni and skilfully supported by English guitarist Duncan James and drummer Sylvain Petite. This time they have their latest album «Back in Time» (2024) with them.

The name says it all! Roughly translated, Fulu Miziki means «music made from rubbish» and that is also the concept behind this eco-friendly afro-futuristic punk collective: the musicians make their own instruments, costumes and masks from discarded objects such as canisters, metal cans and PVC pipes. Their message is unmistakable: the multidisciplinary artists from the Congo want to draw attention to the accumulating waste in Kinshasa and everywhere else in the world and call on people to reconnect with nature. What does that sound like? Complex yet danceable rhythms and songs somewhere between punk, electro and Congolese rumba. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

Based on modern Jazz, pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Julian Sartorius create multi-layered soundscapes. They like to challenge the listener with noisy elements, bizarre sound combinations and irritating rhythms, without their sound ever losing its accessibility.

The multi-talent became known in 1974 with the new wave formation Squeeze, and since 1992 he has hosted the successful music show &quot;Later... with Jools Holland&quot; on BBC, while also touring with his own boogie-woogie, R&#x27;n&#x27;B and pop program. He is always accompanied by a top-class line-up. This year he will be supported by the Jamaican R&#x27;n&#x27;B voice Ruby Turner.

The renowned artist Sina is celebrating her 30th anniversary. The singer has invited her loyal fans to determine the live program: The &quot;Bescht of 30 Jahre&quot; fan playlist is the result of this campaign. Yavuz musical career dates back to 1997 when he first stepped into the Istanbul music scene with Acid Jazz. His path led from the Shaman World Music Club to well-known clubs of Istanbul&#x27;s nightlife, such as Eski Beyrut, Hayal Kahvesi, Araf Bar or Melek Bar, where he was significantly involved in establishing world music as a trend on the Bosphorus. He moved to Zurich in 20018 and regularly plays in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, and Turkey at various concerts, festivals, world electronic beat, and funk parties.
