Musique en Route invites the whole family to discover traditional folk music from the various countries of Eastern Europe! You can dance wildly, listen attentively or sway wistfully: With their infectious joy of playing, the quartet is able to take both young and old on this musical journey. For over twenty years, Zürcher Kantonalbank has been supporting young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazzpreis at Moods. Winning the prize not only brings financial support, but often also inclusion in the Pro Helvetia Foundation&#x27;s priority jazz promotion programme, giving the band the opportunity to present their music on international stages. The festival is a six-day event full of music and talent. Six nominated bands are given the chance to present themselves to a jury of national and international experts and a broad audience. The bands not only have to impress with their musical quality, but also demonstrate their professionalism and show their development potential.

The name says it all: the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays klezmer and adds a pinch of jazz, Balkan or gypsy to the mix. The band started out as a group of street musicians in 1996 and has played countless live shows since then. In February 2024, they released their twentieth album &quot;Bomba Pop&quot;, which was produced by Ulf Lindemann aka Dunkelbunt. The sound on it is as we know it and yet it is so much more: beats that range from dub to hip-hop to dance music also like to sneak in. A danceable journey around the world!

Lyrical melodies and virtuoso solos alternate with groovy passages in wi»ch the band&#x27;s Cuban roots are clearly evident: The seven musicians of El Comité came together in Toulouse in 2017 when they gave an impromptu concert – which was also the starting signal for the formation of the band. The band members had previously played with various big names from the Cuban music scene, such as Issac Delgado and Bueno Vista Social Club. «Chicago» live vertont vom Satoko Fujii Quartet

IOIC, Misterioso Jazz Club and Moods present:

The movie: Roxy Hart is sexy, jazz-loving and dressed to kill. She has a doting, handsome husband and a gold-digging affair with another man who pays and pays, ultimately with his life. When Roxie is put on trial for murder, she hires a lawyer who is both the mafia&#x27;s mouthpiece and a PR agent. She hits the headlines and the courtroom drama takes its course. This satirical story about sex and murder is an entertaining mixture of humor and melodrama and at the same time a sharp criticism of sleaze journalism. Although Frank Urson was the director, it is essentially the work of Cecil B. DeMille, who apparently felt it inappropriate to take full credit for this cynical and secular story while his religious spectacle THE KING OF KINGS was still in theaters. The music: The film is scored by the Satoko Fujii Quartet with Satoko Fujii on piano, Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, Takemura Hayakawa on electric bass and Tatsuya Yoshida on drums. The quartet reunited last year after a break of 15 years and was enthusiastically received: The rhythm section drives the music forward at breakneck speed, sometimes giving it a rock rather than a boppy feel, or something in between. Fujii&#x27;s compositions are wonderfully complex, with rhythm and tempo changes, long unison lines and brilliantly dense arrangements. Both Fujii and Tamura are in excellent form. This music has a very free character, but the discipline and skill of the four musicians is best shown in the transitions between the improvised and arranged moments. Before and after the movie, DJ Misterioso will present selected gems from his vinyl collection. The evening takes place in collaboration with the IOIC - Institute of Incoherent Cinematography and the Misterioso Jazz Club.

Hip Hop Zoo, Style Bakery & Moods present

There has never been an anomaly in hip-hop quite like the southern trio CunninLynguists. Sampling genres from psych-rock to blues, New Romantic to polka, they have been musically compared to UGK and Atmosphere in the same breath. CunninLynguists have eschewed categories, boxes and labels for 16 years, 5 albums, 3 compilations, 2 mixtapes &amp; 3 solo releases. Backed with gritty beats, quality rhymes and 808 thump, the ‘Lynguists recapture the soul in southern hip-hop. Kno, hailing from Georgia and, has been described as “one of the top loop-miners east of the Mississippi” by URB Magazine. He produced the majority of the group’s discography. He released a solo album in 2010 entitled Death Is Silent &amp; instrumental release Bones in 2016. Born in Versailles, Kentucky, Deacon is also an established producer, having produced for the likes of KRS-One and more. Deacon released a solo album in 2015 entitled Peace or Power. Lexington-born Natti is the third and final piece of the CunninLynguists’ puzzle. After turning to music in the early 2000’s, the KY native’s gravely drawl and streetwise. Natti’s solo endeavor Still Motion was released in 2013.

The singer from the East African country of Malawi has always been a moving storyteller. However, Malia has always changed and developed stylistically. After the Nina Simone album «Black Orchid», the later «Malawi Blues» and «The Garden of Eve», her latest album «One Grass Skirt to London», which focuses on her 8,200-kilometre journey from Malawi to London, is being released this year. This is not only a musical, geographical and temporal journey, but above all a sentimental one - symbolized by new interpretations of selected film music. «Behind each of these songs is either a memory, a personal experience or the feeling of being able to convey a part of myself. Pianist and composer Chris Wiesendanger&#x27;s latest band project is an orchestra and chamber music ensemble in one - various smaller ensembles alternate and regroup to accompany solos, to change textures and orchestration. The project «Great Drum Booms» juxtaposes composition with improvisation in an unpredictable and fluid way, making each concert a unique event. Scenes change, stories develop, jumping from groove to sound, from world to world.

Balkan Moods is a group of five renowned soloists from Bulgaria centred around the kaval player Theodosii Spassov. The instrumentalist and composer is known for his virtuoso and innovative playing on the traditional kaval flute - one of the oldest instruments in Europe - and for his ability to combine different genres. The love of cross-genre music has also brought this quintet together: Their repertoire is made up of works by contemporary composers from Bulgaria and Serbia, combining traditional Balkan music, classical music and jazz.

Peter Evans EXTRA feat. Petter Eldh & Jim Black

Bassist Petter Eldh, drummer Jim Black and trumpeter and composer Peter Evans have known each other for several years. What the three of them have in common is their desire not only to use conventional parameters for improvisation, but also to experiment with those that are not usual and commonplace - such as timbre, dynamics or form and structure. Evans, Eldh and Black also have a very specific idea of how the playing of improvised music should be organised and how the result should sound. Evans&#x27; compositions open up new spaces for the spontaneity of free improvisation and the sensitivity of chamber music expression and also integrate Eldh&#x27;s and Black&#x27;s imaginative use of electronic music.

La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. Ebi Soda, an up-and-coming quintet from Brighton, is shaking up the UK jazz scene with a fresh, industrial sound. Their music is the result of long jam sessions in shabby studio apartments, reflecting the greyness of British streets and the dazzling influences of the internet. With their hard beats and an atmosphere that is more reminiscent of raves than classic jazz, they turn traditional norms on their head. The only constant is their love of experimentation.

Benin International Musical

The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. A groovy homage to a rich cultural history! Before and after the concert, DJ Voilà Tim will play a selection of African grooves. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

Klaus Koenig – Seven Things

Album Release «From Major to Minor»

Klaus Koenig has worked as a sound engineer at Radio Studio Zurich since the 1960s and founded the legendary Jazz Live Trio with Peter Frei and Peter Schmidlin. In this formation, he accompanied soloists such as Johnny Griffin, Dexter Gordon, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton and many more in over 100 live broadcasts. After a 15-year break due to illness and cautious beginnings to revive his legendary Jazz Live Trio with young musicians, Klaus Koenig decided to bring in two wind players. This is how the quintet Seven Things was formed in 2013. Their first album Piazza Rotonda received the highest number of five stars in Jazz&#x27;N&#x27;More. This was followed by the recordings Seven Things We Always Wanted to Know and Kings And Illusion, which was awarded all five stars in the NZZ am Sonntag, as was its successor Dark With Excessive Bright. On October 13, 2024, Klaus Koenig will not only celebrate his 88th birthday at Moods, but also launch his fifth album From Major to Minor. The ideal opportunity to toast this impressive career.

Album Release «Knobisous»

Knobil is a French-language vocal jazz project by Lausanne-based double bassist, singer and composer Louise Knobil. Inspired by Esperanza Spalding, Charles Mingus and Oscar Pettiford, she presents her compositions together with Chloé Marsigny on bass clarinet and Vincent Andreae on drums in a style somewhere between singer-songwriter, post-bop and glittering jazz. This time Louise Knobil has her second EP «Knobisous» (2024) with her, a musical diary, in which she deals with topics such as polyamory, break-ups, laundry, queer coming-out and the systemic patriarchy.

Three Swiss jazz musicians from three different generations: Drummer Daniel Humair, bassist Heiri Känzig and trombonist Samuel Blaser form together the trio &quot;Helveticus&quot;. Founded in 2020, the band is now on tour with their second album &quot;Our Way&quot; on which they remain true to their concept: the repertoire includes original compositions, jazz standards and interpretations of Swiss folk songs from different parts of the country.

An expressive singer who doesn&#x27;t mince her words: Bia Ferreira uses her music to speak out against racism, homophobia and in favour of equality. The lyrics of the Brazilian singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer are direct, in her songs Afro-diasporic rhythms such as soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, reggae and rap meet Brazilian music styles such as samba and repente. The result is a powerful sound that conveys a clear message: No to any form of discrimination and yes to love. In collaboration with Adalu.

Pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa has been making a name for himself in the world of jazz and beyond over the past two decades, ever since he won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. Harold López-Nussa has released nine acclaimed albums and captivated audiences around the world with his exciting performances at renowned venues and jazz festivals. Born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba, his music reflects the full range and richness of the Cuban musical tradition, with its distinctive combination of classical, folk and popular elements, as well as its openness to improvisation. With the release of his first album on Blue Note Records in August 2023, Timba a la Americana, Harold López-Nussa takes an important step in his career with a vibrant album, full of joy and pathos, inspired by the pianist&#x27;s recent decision to leave his Cuban homeland and start a new life in France. Produced by Michael League (Snarky Puppy), Timba a la Americana presents 10 dynamic new compositions and features harmonica virtuoso Grégoire Maret, Thibaud Soulas on bass and Harold&#x27;s brother Ruy Adrián López-Nussa on drums.

Kurt Rosenwinkel's NEXT STEP

Jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has been active on the jazz scene for over 30 years and is one of the most distinguished guitarists of his generation. During his career, he has worked with countless musicians such as Eric Harland, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and many more. Now he is on tour with the original The Next Step band and the album ‘The Next Step: Live at Smalls (1996)’, newly released on Rosenwinkel&#x27;s own label Heartcore Records. On it, he explores the boundaries of jazz with complex harmonies and lyrical melodies.

Bill Laurance Solo

Five-time Grammy winner, pianist and composer Bill Laurance has already travelled a remarkable journey through a wide variety of formations and styles. Originally starting out as a classical pianist, he co-founded the fusion power collective Snarky Puppy and has played with the trip-hop trio Morcheeba as well as with jazz greats such as guitarist Lionel Loueke. And his creative drive still seems unchecked: he has released three albums in the last two years, including the solo album «Affinity» (2022), the duo album «Where you wish you were» with Michael League and most recently «Bloom» (2024) together with the string orchestra The Untold Orchestra. This time, Bill Laurance is coming to Moods solo and you can look forward to a concert full of joyful playing, creativity and improvisation.

Kaisa&#x27;s Machine is Kaisa Mäensivu&#x27;s vision of music in the form of her compositions. It is understandable in its purity - sometimes solemnly bouncing and grooving, sometimes making you think about all the mysteries and tragedies of life. Playing bass is Mäensivu&#x27;s way of dealing with all this. Mäensivu&#x27;s compositions are soulful and sophisticated, her playing is equally profound and often takes centre stage: her sonority and touch are instantly recognisable. A sense of history, richness of sound and surprise pervades her music.

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

Jasmine Myra is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader from Leeds and is part of the city&#x27;s vibrant, creative and cross-genre music scene, which is bursting with young talent. Whether back then in the Gelateria on Idaplatz, in the Elisaburg restaurant, in the Kauz and for several years in its own Lokal Sender: every Thursday, the GDS audience was able to discover new live music on site and on the radio at the same time. So it&#x27;s all the better that this journey is now continuing at Moods. No longer weekly, but with international guests in addition to the local ones: Dele Sosimi is nothing less than one of the most important pioneers of Afrobeat. The musician, who was born in Hackney and grew up in Lagos, played keys in Fela Kuti&#x27;s legendary band ‘Egypt 80’ and influenced many of the band&#x27;s later hits as an arranger. In his 40-year career, he has collaborated with countless musicians from the fields of Latin, electronica, jazz and hip-hop, flying the unmistakable flag of Nigerian music far and wide and inspiring a whole generation of British musicians to embrace Afrobeat. Dejot aka Daniel Jakob is responsible for the local support. The busy man from Bern has been producing dub-soaked electronica since the 90s and has collaborated with established greats such as Lee Scratch Perry, Yello, Nicolette, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Baze and many more. Simon Grab – im Kunstraum Walcheturm

Zurich musician Simon Grab takes his long-time collaboration partner Yao Bobby on stage with him for a special programme designed especially for the evening. Grab also invites London-based musician Dhangsha aka Aniruddha Das for a solo set. Yao Bobby and Simon Grab have been working on their unique style since 2018 - a combination of dirty bass electronics by Swiss noisemaker Simon Grab with straightforward rapped lyrics in Ewe, the native language of Togolese MC Yao Bobby. This performance focusses on pulsations in the bass frequencies - a dark, experimental hip-hop and bass noise experience. As the duo ‘Yao Bobby x Simon Grab’, they release their music on the Bristol label LavaLava Records, and some of their music videos have won awards. Other tracks have appeared on compilations by labels such as Exist Records, Syrphe and the Nyege Nyege Tapes. The latter organises the renowned Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda, where the duo will be performing for the second time. Wire Magazine also writes enthusiastically: ‘This is music that stands up to our modern madness while providing a gloriously righteous salve.’ Simon Grab also releases as a solo artist on the Zurich label -OUS and performs in various constellations and collaborations. Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) is an electronic musician who creates disturbances at the intersection of bass music and experimental noise. He creates turbulent soundscapes consisting of sparse but heavy beats underpinned by ‘alien’ call-and-response patterns that he attempts to mutilate through brutal distortion. He has released several albums, most recently ‘Broadcast Signal Intrusion’ on Brachliegen Tapes, as well as contributing to compilations by Syrphe, Avon Terror Corps, Iklectik, Industrial Coast, Hard Return and the vinyl ‘Disruptive Frequencies’ on Nonclassical. A soul voice that gives you goosebumps: Big Daddy Wilson casts a special spell on his listeners with his dark baritone. The American blues singer-songwriter and his long-standing backing band The Goosebumps Bros. will be presenting their new, jointly recorded album «Plan B» (2023) on this tour. They will take their audience on a musical journey through the many nuances of black music, ranging from roots blues to classic soul and from folk to contemporary urban grooves.

Fulu Miziki

The name says it all! Roughly translated, Fulu Miziki means «music made from rubbish» and that is also the concept behind this eco-friendly afro-futuristic punk collective: the musicians make their own instruments, costumes and masks from discarded objects such as canisters, metal cans and PVC pipes. Their message is unmistakable: the multidisciplinary artists from the Congo want to draw attention to the accumulating waste in Kinshasa and everywhere else in the world and call on people to reconnect with nature. What does that sound like? Complex yet danceable rhythms and songs somewhere between punk, electro and Congolese rumba. Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

The two skilfully merge acoustic and electronically generated sounds or allow them to collide. They meander organically through different worlds of sound, building up arcs of tension that crumble unexpectedly and end in noisy atmospheres. Smudged pointillism slowly blurs into an acoustic blanket, rubbing dissonances meet soothing harmonies.

Tim Dahl Solo

It&#x27;s not easy to describe Tim Dahl&#x27;s music in one sentence. The bassist, singer, keyboardist and composer, who has lived in New York City since 1998, loves to attack his bass and carve out sounds like a butcher cutting up meat. It&#x27;s like acoustic exposure therapy, a harsh but cleansing journey through noise, grind and drone, through the mind of a vital artist.

Yemen Blues is the band around the charismatic singer Ravid Kahalani, who grew up between Yemeni tradition and Western modernity.
