An expressive singer who doesn&#x27;t mince her words: Bia Ferreira uses her music to speak out against racism, homophobia and in favour of equality. The lyrics of the Brazilian singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer are direct, in her songs Afro-diasporic rhythms such as soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, reggae and rap meet Brazilian music styles such as samba and repente. The result is a powerful sound that conveys a clear message: No to any form of discrimination and yes to love. In collaboration with Adalu. With this event, we are participating in «Nightlife in Solidarity», a month-long fundraiser for migrants.

Luca Durán is a versatile Swiss-Colombian producer whose debut album Libertas is an exciting musical journey on the themes of freedom and independence. The album marks a turning point in his career, which has evolved from house and techno to a broader spectrum including ambient, Latin American rhythms and IDM. Pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa has been making a name for himself in the world of jazz and beyond over the past two decades, ever since he won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. Harold López-Nussa has released nine acclaimed albums and captivated audiences around the world with his exciting performances at renowned venues and jazz festivals. Born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba, his music reflects the full range and richness of the Cuban musical tradition, with its distinctive combination of classical, folk and popular elements, as well as its openness to improvisation. With the release of his first album on Blue Note Records in August 2023, Timba a la Americana, Harold López-Nussa takes an important step in his career with a vibrant album, full of joy and pathos, inspired by the pianist&#x27;s recent decision to leave his Cuban homeland and start a new life in France. Produced by Michael League (Snarky Puppy), Timba a la Americana presents 10 dynamic new compositions and features harmonica virtuoso Grégoire Maret, Thibaud Soulas on bass and Harold&#x27;s brother Ruy Adrián López-Nussa on drums.

Kurt Rosenwinkel's NEXT STEP

Jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has been active on the jazz scene for over 30 years and is one of the most distinguished guitarists of his generation. During his career, he has worked with countless musicians such as Eric Harland, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and many more. Now he is on tour with the original The Next Step band and the album ‘The Next Step: Live at Smalls (1996)’, newly released on Rosenwinkel&#x27;s own label Heartcore Records. On it, he explores the boundaries of jazz with complex harmonies and lyrical melodies.

Bill Laurance Solo

Five-time Grammy winner, pianist and composer Bill Laurance has already travelled a remarkable journey through a wide variety of formations and styles. Originally starting out as a classical pianist, he co-founded the fusion power collective Snarky Puppy and has played with the trip-hop trio Morcheeba as well as with jazz greats such as guitarist Lionel Loueke. And his creative drive still seems unchecked: he has released three albums in the last two years, including the solo album «Affinity» (2022), the duo album «Where you wish you were» with Michael League and most recently «Bloom» (2024) together with the string orchestra The Untold Orchestra. This time, Bill Laurance is coming to Moods solo and you can look forward to a concert full of joyful playing, creativity and improvisation.

Kaisa&#x27;s Machine is Kaisa Mäensivu&#x27;s vision of music in the form of her compositions. It is understandable in its purity - sometimes solemnly bouncing and grooving, sometimes making you think about all the mysteries and tragedies of life. Playing bass is Mäensivu&#x27;s way of dealing with all this. Mäensivu&#x27;s compositions are soulful and sophisticated, her playing is equally profound and often takes centre stage: her sonority and touch are instantly recognisable. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam offers an important platform for the Swiss jazz jam scene. Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Nikki Iles

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

Whether back then in the Gelateria on Idaplatz, in the Elisaburg restaurant, in the Kauz and for several years in its own Lokal Sender: every Thursday, the GDS audience was able to discover new live music on site and on the radio at the same time. So it&#x27;s all the better that this journey is now continuing at Moods. No longer weekly, but with international guests in addition to the local ones: Dele Sosimi is nothing less than one of the most important pioneers of Afrobeat. The musician, who was born in Hackney and grew up in Lagos, played keys in Fela Kuti&#x27;s legendary band ‘Egypt 80’ and influenced many of the band&#x27;s later hits as an arranger. In his 40-year career, he has collaborated with countless musicians from the fields of Latin, electronica, jazz and hip-hop, flying the unmistakable flag of Nigerian music far and wide and inspiring a whole generation of British musicians to embrace Afrobeat. Simon Grab – im Kunstraum Walcheturm

Zurich musician Simon Grab takes his long-time collaboration partner Yao Bobby on stage with him for a special programme designed especially for the evening. Grab also invites London-based musician Dhangsha aka Aniruddha Das for a solo set. Yao Bobby and Simon Grab have been working on their unique style since 2018 - a combination of dirty bass electronics by Swiss noisemaker Simon Grab with straightforward rapped lyrics in Ewe, the native language of Togolese MC Yao Bobby. This performance focusses on pulsations in the bass frequencies - a dark, experimental hip-hop and bass noise experience. As the duo ‘Yao Bobby x Simon Grab’, they release their music on the Bristol label LavaLava Records, and some of their music videos have won awards. Other tracks have appeared on compilations by labels such as Exist Records, Syrphe and the Nyege Nyege Tapes. The latter organises the renowned Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda, where the duo will be performing for the second time. Wire Magazine also writes enthusiastically: ‘This is music that stands up to our modern madness while providing a gloriously righteous salve.’ Simon Grab also releases as a solo artist on the Zurich label -OUS and performs in various constellations and collaborations. Dhangsha (Bengali for ‘destruction’) is an electronic musician who creates disturbances at the intersection of bass music and experimental noise. He creates turbulent soundscapes consisting of sparse but heavy beats underpinned by ‘alien’ call-and-response patterns that he attempts to mutilate through brutal distortion. He has released several albums, most recently ‘Broadcast Signal Intrusion’ on Brachliegen Tapes, as well as contributing to compilations by Syrphe, Avon Terror Corps, Iklectik, Industrial Coast, Hard Return and the vinyl ‘Disruptive Frequencies’ on Nonclassical. A soul voice that gives you goosebumps: Big Daddy Wilson casts a special spell on his listeners with his dark baritone. The American blues singer-songwriter and his long-standing backing band The Goosebumps Bros. will be presenting their new, jointly recorded album «Plan B» (2023) on this tour. They will take their audience on a musical journey through the many nuances of black music, ranging from roots blues to classic soul and from folk to contemporary urban grooves.

Fulu Miziki

The name says it all! Roughly translated, Fulu Miziki means «music made from rubbish» and that is also the concept behind this eco-friendly afro-futuristic punk collective: the musicians make their own instruments, costumes and masks from discarded objects such as canisters, metal cans and PVC pipes. Their message is unmistakable: the multidisciplinary artists from the Congo want to draw attention to the accumulating waste in Kinshasa and everywhere else in the world and call on people to reconnect with nature. What does that sound like? Complex yet danceable rhythms and songs somewhere between punk, electro and Congolese rumba. Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

Following the introduction, attendees will listen to the full album recording together, uninterrupted, in an atmosphere that encourages deep engagement with the art of listening. The Jammin’ Band

Jammin&#x27; carries on! One year after the death of band leader Boris Pilleri, the six musicians have decided to carry on the story that began in 1976. However, Jammin&#x27; is not a tribute band. The typical groovy-bluesy-funky sound is consistently continued. With Rolf Stahlhofen (Söhne Mannheims) as vocalist and Jean-Pierre Von Dach (Gigi Moto, Joss Stone) on guitar, two top international musicians have been recruited to shape the sound in a new way. With Martin Kissling on drums, Marcel Suk on bass and Fabian Baur on keyboards, the well-rehearsed rhythm section remains unchanged. And the Loyal Air Force Horns with Andreas Beer (trumpet), Pat Schnyder (saxophones) and Valerio Lepori (trombone) have been providing the side-kick and the extra portion of harmony for the jammin&#x27; sound with precise brass sections and ear-splitting solos for many years.

Sometimes meditative, sometimes cinematic, with rhythmic elements that evolve, complement each other and develop into a driving maelstrom: Mammal Hands play a driving fusion of jazz and electronica that never loses its accessibility despite its complexity. The band is now on the road with their fifth album &quot;Gift from the Trees&quot; (2023) - a must for all fans of Portico Quartet, Gogo Penguin or Grandbrothers.

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. The versatility of singer Marianne Racine is hard to beat and her all-round musicality repeatedly leads to astonishing performances. Swing and solo flights of fancy are provided by a dream team of the younger generation: bassist Patrick Sommer &amp; drummer Andreas Wettstein with their famously - rapturously groovy interplay; Lucerne pianist Lukas Gernet with attentively sensitive sounds and singable melodies. In short: this quartet is bursting with joy of playing, humor and solid craftsmanship.

Bruno Spoerri: The Electronic Side

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. Piet Jan Blauw began his career as a visual artist, while also working as a percussionist. Early on he made objects and then began to build electronic instruments and art installations. Numerous installations and performances in Europe, the USA and Mexico followed. His performances are both auditory and visual experiences. Gabriel Schiltknecht is a percussionist with heart and soul. His musical career began with the formation SCHILDPATT. After training as a primary school teacher, he taught at the Swiss School in Accra/Ghana, played with important local musicians and acquired a wide-ranging knowledge of the drumming tradition.

In a playful, associative roundelay, the trio BrueckerMeisterTrauffer explores the diverse relationships that our innards have to the subject of purification and detoxification. They embark on a journey through the sewage treatment plant, get stuck in the oil trap and end up in the pre-thickening process together with fresh sludge. Finally, an operation is performed: The guilty conscience has to come out! Language becomes music and music becomes language. Pure and impure rhymes and ditties resound.

Fitzgerald & Rimini

Annoying sounds are undesirable and are usually filtered out, but their reputation is worse than their sound. Physically indistinguishable from other sounds, they are considered annoying: the squeak of a door is oiled away, the hiss of a radio is suppressed. Fitzgerald&amp;Rimini, consisting of the writer and performer Ariane von Graffenried and the musician and sound artist Robert Aeberhard, have been working for years at the interface of literature, music and performance, playing with words, sound and noise.

Active since 2001, Ayyuka was one of the first bands to look back to the Turkish music of the 70s and create a new, unmistakable sound from it. Immediately after their debut album in 2007, Ayyuka shared the stage with Sonic Youth and Jonathan Richman; their third studio album Sömestr is considered a cult album among record collectors. Inspired by international names such as Dick Dale or John Frusciante as well as local heroes such as Erkin Koray or Orhan Gencebay, their music sounds guitar oriented, their fascination with film music and improvisation provides surprising twists and turns. The worldwide hype of their single Yukadans is now followed by their EP Zaman Ziyan, which leads the listener through a kaleidoscope of musical landscapes with borrowings from genres such as Afro-Beat, Funk, Boss Nova or Arabesque.

BALTHVS is one of the positive results of the pandemic! The three musicians used the time of standstill to form a band in 2020. Since then, the psychedelic funk trio from Bogotá has already released over 30 singles and three albums, on which they cross genre boundaries and fuse influences from cumbia, surf rock and funk. And they don&#x27;t intend to stop there: In addition to their many releases, they are also busy conquering the world&#x27;s stages and thrilling audiences with their energetic live shows.

Having grown up between cultures as the granddaughter of migrant workers in Germany, she calls her current musical style Gurbetçi Müzik meets Darbuka Disko. Away from the fast-paced outside world towards the inner world. OSOMO counters our hectic zeitgeist by inviting us on a journey. Conceived as transporting music, it creates a sonic environment in which listeners can immerse themselves in their own thoughts, feelings and physical sensations, move around and stay there. It is a journey that leads to different places for each person. The OSOMO live sets offer a musical and physical space to be, to lie down, to dream, to sleep - from letting go to the most concentrated, deepest listening. OSOMO is music that envelops you, carries you away and offers an experience that is both mysterious and challenging: What happens to us when we are touched by music - be it in our bodies or our minds - remains unfathomable. I&#x27;ve always been searching for that moment when music can change the way you feel. OSOMO is the solo project of musician Simon Baumann (drummer with Stephan Eicher, collaborations with Colin Vallon, Mario Batkovic, Don Li and others). With a singing bass, a handful of atmospheric effects and lyrics about illusions that he encounters in his search for himself and the great expanse, Pascal Eugster envelops his audience in a gentle magic. Best known as the bassist of the Zurich-based band Black Sea Dahu, the former Kush K and Alois musician will present his new solo compositions. 

The Emmanuelle Bonnet Quartet meets around improvisation and collective experimentation. The four musicians, based in Geneva, Basel, Köln and New York, are in search of sounds and textures, with the intention of being fully and freely in the moment. They build a unique group sound, exploring different styles of music from jazz-inspired compositions to improvised fragments or even early music.

Old master Aki Takase, who is already a legend of jazz music (2021 Albert Mangelsdorff Prize and German Jazz Prize Piano) and has toured or recorded with musicians such as Dave Liebman, Sheila Jordan, Lester Bowie, Rashid Ali, Reggie Workman, David Murray, NHOP and many more, is constantly devoting herself to new projects and musicians who have a similarly open understanding of music as she does. She has already explored the mixture of jazz, new music, dance and electronic music in previous projects, Aki Takase releases the second album with her main band, JAPANIC. On &quot;Forte&quot;, the leading figure in European improvisational jazz once again demonstrates her energetic, radiant nature. Her outstanding bandmates include her former student Daniel Erdmann, who has won the Echo, German Jazz Prize Saxophone, SWR Jazz Prize etc. and has made a name for himself internationally. Turntable wizard DJ Illvibe aka Vincent von Schlippenbach, co-founder of MoaBeat, Lychee Lassi and Seeed, who as producer of Peter Fox, Seeed and Marteria makes up the hip-hop and rap-affine part of the music and is part of Germany&#x27;s best-known producer team “The Krauts”. Portuguese bassist Carlos Bica (Maria Joao, Bica&#x27;s Azul with Jim Black and Frank Möbus, etc.) and Dag Magnus Narvesen (Kitchenorchester, Alex v Schlippenbach) are also involved, forming the rhythm section and providing the structure for the wonderful carpet of sound that JAPANIC rolls out before us.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Dave Taylor & Daniel Schnyder

Dave Taylor has been the world&#x27;s most influential bass trombonist since he emerged on the New York music scene in the late 1960s. His unmistakable bass trombone sound can be heard on hundreds of albums, including recordings by Duke Ellington, The Rolling Stones, Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Blood Sweat &amp; Tears, Tina Turner, Gil Evans, Bob Mintzer Big Band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Dave has also performed worldwide as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and encourages composers to write new and challenging music for the bass trombone. One musician who has a long and close artistic partnership with Dave is the Swiss composer and saxophonist Daniel Schynder, who will contribute a set for this concert and also perform as a soloist. For the conductor of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Ed Partyka, this project fulfills a long-cherished wish: Dave Taylor has been an idol of mine since I met him in the 1980s when he played with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band (still one of the most impressive live concerts I&#x27;ve ever heard!). I&#x27;m thrilled that we can finally realize this dream with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. The second set will be newly composed by Ed Partyka and arranged for Dave Taylor and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra.

Camilla George

Camilla George is a visionary saxophonist, composer, bandleader and innovator. Her strong cultural roots and love of fusing African and Western Music has informed her own unique style, a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene, alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is a hypnotising blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz, with a politically minded subtext that has a powerful connection to her Nigerian identity, lineage and heritage, reflecting African history, culture and slavery. Her most recent album, ‘Ibio Ibio’, is a tribute to her tribe the Ibibio people of South Eastern Coastal Nigeria. The album features an incredible lineup, including Daniel Casimir, Sarah Tandy, Winton Clifford, Renato Paris, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Rosie Turton, Shirley Tetteh, hip hop drummer, Daru Jones, Birmingham based rapper, Lady Sanity and Sam Jones. Recent notable performances include North Sea Jazz Festival, where Camilla performed with both her own group and as a featured artist in the ‘Diaspora Suite’ performance; Jazz a Vienne, where Camilla also sat in for a guest spot with Marcus Miller; EFG London Jazz Festival, Jazz In The Park Romania, Brosella and Jazz Onze Lausanne.

The dynamic collaboration between the Greek vibraphonist and the German-Romanian double bassist has given rise to an artistic partnership that defies the constraints of rigid genre categorization. Their musical research journey is based on a variety of sources: from the intricate compositions of 20th and 21st century classical music to the spirited rhythms of jazz and evocative stories interwoven in the traditions of folklore. This collaborative sonic exploration transcends the boundaries of predefined labels: the essence of their work lies in the realm of boundless creativity. The interweaving of their unique backgrounds results in an exquisite tapestry of sound in which the vibrancy of the Balkans merges with the cosmopolitan influence of contemporary European musical landscapes. Like a delicate thread of free improvisation, their performances unfold in an unscripted dance that reflects the flow of life itself.

Caroline Davis is a creative epicenter from the Brooklyn jazz scene and is one of the most imaginative saxophonists with her surprising range of activities. Her active projects include the jazz-inspired band Portals, the experimental R&amp;B project My Tree and the protest band Alula. Acclaimed by international critics, the saxophonist works in a variety of creative contexts, each creating a unique sound world in which free improvisation and composition are harmonized. On this evening exclusively together with the singer Cansu Tanrýkulu, who is a unique storyteller with her chameleon-like vocals, the living legend Jim Black, whose boundless musical vocabulary and inventive artistry never ceases to amaze, and Elias Stemeseder, a musician of remarkable skill, flair and imagination, whose diverse playing ranges from song-oriented to contemporary classical pieces to electronic music. A composer and her sonic workshop: Together with her nine fellow musicians, Swiss composer and pianist Luzia von Wyl experiments until sparks fly. They create virtuoso music that not only stretches the boundaries of jazz, but sometimes even goes beyond them - the line-up alone with piano, marimba, percussion, strings and several woodwinds goes far beyond a traditional jazz formation. Lyrical, originally orchestrated soundscapes alternate with solid grooves, intricate rhythms meet wide-ranging melody lines - and Luzia von Wyl&#x27;s compositions repeatedly open up scopes for improvisation. “The Swiss composer has her very own signature style - so convincing, captivating and delightful that comparisons are superfluous,” writes the German magazine Jazzthetik. “Von Wyl&#x27;s compositions are a thing of impish joy throughout!” praises The Guardian and the Luzerner Zeitung reports: ”Airy sound, brilliant virtuosity, minimalist elements and a very special groove: Luzia von Wyl&#x27;s sheer inexhaustible inventiveness pulsates through all the pieces. That is great art.” The Luzia von Wyl Ensemble will be bringing their latest album “Frakmont” with them, which is inspired by the Swiss mountains. It will also be presenting even newer works for the first time in Zurich: music that has only been written in recent weeks and is now being premiered.

He is considered one of the most promising artists of his generation and has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past four years: The Swiss-French saxophonist Léon Phal. Valuing jazz just as much as electro, his latest album “Stress Killer” is the perfect mix of all the styles he loves; from the eternal themes of John Coltrane to house rhythms, from bebop to French touch. The Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp (OTPMD) is a Swiss-based avant-garde music collective that delights audiences with its eclectic mix of genres and captivating live performances. Founded in Geneva in 2006 by double bass player Vincent Bertholet, OTPMD takes its cue from the great African groups of the 20th century, such as the Tout Puissant Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou, and tips its hat to the revolutionary French artist Marcel Duchamp. Their sixth album &#x27;Venre Unique&#x27; will be released in November 2024 on the Geneva label Bongo Joe Records. We&#x27;re looking forward to what&#x27;s to come!
