The musician of Japanese-Polish origin wraps her music in stories and tells them in a spectrum ranging from jazz and art-pop to free improvisation and neoclassical music.

Yumi Ito is not only a distinguished musician, but also an independent composer and singer who moves effortlessly and at the same time competently between jazz, art-pop, electronica, free improvisation and neo-classical music, generating a sound that is fresh and often surprising. She also teaches jazz singing at the ZHdK.The podcast was recorded in March 2022 immediately after a rehearsal with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra in the corridor of the ZHdK. So please forgive the background noise. We talk to Yumi Ito about her musical work, her work as a lecturer, the role of women in jazz and what jazz actually means in 2022.
