Maud Paquis is an up-and-coming young jazz musician from French-speaking Switzerland. Last year, she and her band won the audience award at the ZKB Jazz Prize, and now she returns to Moods with her debut album. In this interview she tells us what has changed since last autumn.

More than six months have passed since the ZKB Jazz Prize 2024. But for Maud Paquis, the memories of those evenings are still very fresh. Maud and her band, the Maud Paquis Quintet, wowed the audience at Moods and won the audience award. She looks back fondly: 'It was such a great evening at the Jazz Prize. Playing at Moods, where so many stars have played, made me very happy.’The performance of the Maud Paquis Quintet at the ZKB Jazz Prize 2024:
A lot has happened in the musician's life since then. But what exactly? 'We released our first record. It's called Circé,' says Maud proudly. The album, which will be presented at Moods on the 15th of April, contains eleven songs composed by Paquis herself. She describes the songs as a mixture of French chanson, jazz and pop. She was inspired by Madeline Miller's book of the same name. Maud explains: 'The book is about the Greek goddess Circé, who is actually a witch. For me, the story is a mixture of magic, feminism and the sea. It's exactly this mixture that you find on the album.’Another milestone in Maud's career was her first gig at the legendary Sunset Sunside club in Paris. Maud enthuses: It was our first concert in Paris and the place was packed!’So taking part in the Jazz Prize has set a lot of things in motion for Maud. But what is her secret tip for bands and artists who want to apply this year? 'Very simple’, says Maud, 'just try it and see what happens.’ It's no big deal if it doesn't work out. And if it does, it's all the better: 'In life, and especially in music, I think you just have to try and hope for the best.’
