Canadian-Haitian musician Jowee Omicil embodies musical border crossings. He continues along this path on his new album, sMiLes. He will present his latest work live for the first time at Moods. We spoke with him about this exciting occasion.

Jowee Omicil is like an elephant — he doesn't fit into any category. Though this comparison sounds strange at first, it aptly describes the essence of the musician. Jowee's music is always surprising. Omicil knows no categories. His music is subordinate to freedom, mysticism, and rebellion.
The musical border crosser also employed this recipe for success in his latest work, sMiLes, released on November 11 of this year. The title is similar to the play on words at the beginning of the lyrics in that there is more behind it than meets the eye, and it makes more sense as a whole than in its parts. The album title was chosen deliberately, as Omicil reveals in the interview: "The title puts a smile on your face as soon as you read it — but if you look a little closer, you'll also recognize Miles."Miles refers to none other than Miles Davis. The album is a tribute to him, but it doesn't play any of his songs. How does that work? What does it sound like? Jowee explains it as if it were the simplest thing: "Imagine Miles Davis in your own fantasy world: Miles in the year 2025. What would he be doing today?" It's an exciting approach.Jowee Omicil's concert at Moods on December 9 will also be exciting because it will be the first time he plays "sMiLes" live. We wanted to ask him if he was nervous or excited. His answer: "I'm a mix of both! I'm nervous because I've never done this before, but I'm also excited because I know it's going to be great." He also invoked the old adage, "There's only one first time." "When you do something for the first time, it only happens once. It's absolutely unique and will never be the same again. I can hardly wait to share it with you at Moods," Omicil says.
