Jazz on the rise

More and more venues in Zurich are offering jazz a permanent stage. Last year alone, two new venues were added. Rank restaurant in Kreis 1 and Kir Royal bar on Langstrasse.

While the young gastronomy team at Restaurant Rank in Kreis 1 has been inviting a band for a residency of 3 consecutive days for about a year now, the alternative Kir Royal on Langstrasse now hosts the Late Night Jazz series on the second Thursday of every month. At 10pm, 11pm and midnight, Raphael Walser, Rafael Schilt and Márcio de Sousa improvise from uptempo bebop to slow blues. In addition to the newcomers, the older and established venues also offer a varied programme. Jazz im Seefeld has been organising at GZ Riesbach for 10 years, the Lebewohlfabrik revitalises Seefeld, Nik Bärtsch plays weekly on Mondays at Exil, the ZHdK welcomes its students and other guests at Mehrspur, AllBlues brings the big stars to the city, Kasheme combines tunes with live performances and we at Moods offer a varied programme.I'm particularly pleased that young people are taking the initiative in Zurich and also in more alternative, punky places like the Kir Royal (one of my favourite bars, by the way). Because it not only shows that jazz is trending more than ever, that the genre is continuously developing, but also that jazz is once again reaching a wider and younger audience. Whether the big trend from England will finally spill over into Switzerland remains to be seen. But with the new young promoters, I think it's only a matter of time.
