October at Moods has a lot to offer - for example, songs to shed a tear, the finest ballroom kitsch and family bands. In my tips, I'll tell you what I'm particularly looking forward to.
Friday, October 3 - Mira Lu Kovacs
You may know her as the singer of the supergroup "5K HD" or as the grunge guitarist of "My Ugly Clementine". However, Mira Lu also has a solo project and will be presenting her latest album, Please Save Yourself, which was released last year. This much can be revealed: It's absolutely beautiful! It's sad and touching pop ballads with a hint of indie and avant-garde. As she puts it herself with a wink: "Jazzers just make good pop."
Friday, October 10 - Orquesta Aragón
Cuba's finest musicians play with us! Founded in 1939, the Orquesta Aragón is now in its third generation. This thirteen-piece orchestra will invite you to dance the classic Cuban dances—cha-cha-cha, son, danzón, charanga, and bolero—at Moods, keeping you warm on these cold, gray October days.
Tuesday, October 14 - Annie & The Caldwells
With Annie & The Caldwells, music is a family affair: the soul group from Mississippi consists of mother, father, daughters, sons and Annie's godmother. You may have already seen Annie at Moods, when she came with her brothers, the Staples Jr. Singers. Her album "Can't Lose My Soul" was released in March on David Byrne's label Luaka Bop, which releases music by Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and my favorite Floating Points. Which is saying something.
Thursday, October 16 - Stefan Rusconi Solo
Stefan Rusconi's trio was one of the best Swiss jazz acts, causing a sensation both nationally and internationally. However, the tragic loss of a band member brought an end to the project. Rusconi first had to come to terms with this heavy blow, taking an artistic break of several years. His friends gave him "Solace," which means "comfort". Rusconi is now returning the favor with his album of the same name. I am thrilled that he will finally be performing at Moods again after many years.
Thursday, October 23 - Draught & Jarry Singla
The Zugluft duo consists of violinist Andrea Kirchhofer and bass clarinetist Bruno Strüby, an unconventional lineup in Swiss folk music. But this is precisely where the appeal lies. Zugluft plays folk music that does not exist in this form — a folkloric imagination. They combine traditions of various origins with minimal music, jazz, and other influences. It's very exciting. Now, we have Jarry Singla, who knows how to fuse Indian sounds with jazz like no one else. I'm looking forward to hearing the sounds that emerge from this blend.
