Sometimes meditative, sometimes cinematic, with rhythmic elements that evolve, complement each other and develop into a driving maelstrom: Mammal Hands play a driving fusion of jazz and electronica that never loses its accessibility despite its complexity. On the contrary, the trio&#x27;s energetic live performances can put you in an almost trance-like state. The band is now on the road with their fifth album &quot;Gift from the Trees&quot; (2023) - a must for all fans of Portico Quartet, Gogo Penguin or Grandbrothers.

First the world moved closer together, then the borders were drawn up again. That&#x27;s the bad news. But the good news is that OY are not part of it. rSinger/keyboardist Joy Frempong and producer/drummer Melodydreamer have been making music across all musical, linguistic and cultural borders for a decade. The Berlin-based duo with roots in Ghana and Switzerland have thrilled audiences on stages around the world, whether at festivals such as Eurockéenes in France, Rec Beat in Brazil or at club shows in downtown Cairo and New York. 2022 saw them on tour in Europe with the Colombian band Bomba Estéreo as a support act. It is therefore only logical that the title of their current album is World Wide We Polyglot negotiations of political and personal themes are musically realized. From electronica Afrobeats avant-pop to hip-hop, trap and jazz. OY&#x27;s music is more versatile and unified, stylistically more open and self-contained than ever. World Wide We is an open invitation to everyone who wants to dance all clichés to the ground at the duo&#x27;s celebrated concerts.

Mark Lettieri is both an extremely versatile guitarist and a very busy man. At home in virtually every genre, he is currently one of the most sought-after studio musicians and has toured with a number of major artists. In 2008, Lettieri became an integral part of the jazz/world group Snarky Puppy, where he contributes as guitarist, arranger and composer. Outside of Snarky Puppy, Lettieri has released five albums as a leader, and in 2018 Lettieri joined forces with Vulfpeck offshoot The Fearless Flyers, which includes Vulfpeck&#x27;s Cory Wong and Joe Dart on guitar and bass, respectively, and drummer Nate Smith (Chris Potter, Pat Metheny). His most recent recordings include David Crosby, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Adam Levine, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Tori Kelly, Ledisi, Tamela Mann, Eric Roberson, Lecrae, Lupe Fiasco, Keyshia Cole, Xzibit and numerous radio and TV jingles.

Tribute to Bill Holman 

Big band musicians around the world mourn the passing of master composer and arranger Bill Holman, who died on May 6, 2024 at the age of 97. His long and prolific career spanned seven decades and produced hundreds of compositions and arrangements that have become beloved core repertoire of big bands and favorites of their audiences around the world. The last time Bill Holman was in Switzerland (2014), he conducted a concert of his music with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, which remains one of the most memorable performances in the ZJO&#x27;s long history. Our musical directors Daniel Schenker and Ed Partyka met in 1996 as members of the Generations Festival Big Band in Frauenfeld, which was conducted by - you guessed it - Bill Holman. The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the wonderful music and long life of Bill Holman on March 27, performing some of his most popular works as well as some rarely heard gems that highlight the orchestra and its outstanding soloists.

Portable Infinity

Portable Infinity is the name of the Scandinavian-American project. The All-star quartet not only has jazz history with it, but also personal meetings with greats such as Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and Esbjörn Svensson. A lot is connected here: the long experience, the openness to new things and the pure desire to play. “As a child I was always inventing something,” says Benjamin Koppel. “I invented a whole world and a language for this world. I use all that in my music.” The Danish saxophonist and award-winning novelist is a defining figure of European jazz, always in exchange with the American tradition. In the quartet he meets the magically grooving drummer Magnus Öström – a former member of the legendary EST, the incredibly versatile bassist Scott Colley and the energetic pianist Jacob Karlzon, for whom every concert is an event: “For me, performing live in front of an audience is the original place for music, an ecstatic experience for both sides.”

Anyone who has experienced Nikki Hill singing her heart out knows that this woman is like a thunderbolt! Loud, bright and electrifying! Together with husband and guitarist Matt Hill and her ‘Pirate Crew’, the North Carolina-born singer is finally bringing her unmistakable Deep South Soul back to Moods. With unfiltered energy, they take on all varieties of American roots music and deliver a sound that makes you believe in rock and roll again.

The Zürich Jazz Kollektiv is a new contemporary jazz ensemble born out of the desire to create a creative network of local musicians to represent, cultivate and develop contemporary jazz in Switzerland. The ensemble sees itself as a platform for musical innovation and collaboration that both enriches the genre and strengthens and inspires the community of local jazz musicians. The collective&#x27;s music is penned by its founder, tenor saxophonist Victoria Mozalevskaya, and unfolds through the ensemble&#x27;s collaborative vision in energetic live performances and sophisticated arrangements. Joining them for the grand opening is none other than Alex Sipiagin, a longtime member of the big bands of Charles Mingus and George Gruntz and a fellow musician with jazz greats such as Dave Holland and Randy Brecker.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Theo Bleckmann 

Ed Partyka and Theo Bleckmann have worked together on several projects in Germany and Finland since 2007, and as Theo is the new jazz vocal teacher at the ZHDK, a collaboration with the ZJO was but a matter of time. Originally this was supposed to happen last season, but unfortunate circumstances made a postponement necessary. Ed Partyka will arrange Theo&#x27;s own compositions as well as a broad repertoire ranging from jazz standards to songs by Kate Bush for Theo&#x27;s unique voice and combine them with the many interesting instrumental textures and timbres of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. A very special vocal jazz concert. Theo Bleckmann is a multiple GRAMMY®-nominated singer, composer and ECM recording artist who has recorded more than 17 albums and collaborated with artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Sheila Jordan, Kneebody, Ben Monder, John Hollenbeck, Phil Kline, David Lang, Ulysses Owens, Bang on a Can All-Stars and, most notably, Meredith Monk since 1994. Bleckmann was interviewed by Terry Gross on the NPR program Fresh Air and appeared on the David Letterman Show with Laurie Anderson. He consistently tops the DownBeat polls, and in his home country of Germany he was awarded the prestigious JAZZ ECHO by the German Phono Academy.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

One year after her fifth studio album &quot;Longing Fever&quot; won the &#x27;Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award&#x27;, Evelinn Trouble is back on tour with her band. Evelinn Trouble, known for her creative restlessness, her virtuoso voice and her idiosyncratic songwriting has added an exciting pop work to her discography with &quot;Longing Fever&quot; - a break with her psychedelic era but still unmistakably Trouble. It&#x27;s an exciting album that traverses highs and lows with fervour, ranging from Beatlesque love songs to euphoric melodies buoyed by distorted hip-hop. Unexpectedly, new sounds of string instruments join the otherwise dark sound universe of the singer: a string trio expands the band to the &quot;Evelinn Trouble Orchestra&quot;. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

The Clients

For years this formation has been recognised as an irresistible groove machine with well-oiled gears on the Swiss soul and funk scene. The sheer playing enthusiasm, together with the irrepressible, honest sound that these five experienced musicians conjure up on stage, can even get the hips twitching of those reserved non-dancers. In Moods the Clients present a mix of unreleased grooves and nee songs.

Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni Ba

He is recognised as the world’s best player of the Ngoni, a West African lute: Bassekou Kouyaté. No wonder, then, that greats like Youssou Ndour, Bono, Santana and Dee Dee Bridgewater have engaged him for their projects. On the new album «Miri» (2019) Kouyaté again totally leaves aside his electrical sound effects and displays a more thoughtful, acoustic side. Without bowing in the direction of Western listening habits, their sound combines the traditional Griot music from Mali with Blues and Rock&#x27;n&#x27;Roll. His wife and songstress Amy Sacko is described as Mali’s Tina Turner. Together as a sextet, they provide a spectacular, rhythmically strong and expressive performance of the pentatonic music of Mali.

Ziv Ravitz

Ziv Ravitz has made a name for himself as a dependable sideman, as a driving, yet sensitive drummer, and one who also now and then plays rhythmically as a lateral thinker. At 43, and with boundless musical experience, on his latest album «No Man is An Island» he presents his personal vision of today&#x27;s Jazz. For that, he has chosen a reduced trio, without piano or bass. Thus, all musicians are forced to leave their comfort zone in order to fill the gaps and holes, yet the opportunity remains for free, individual expansion in all directions.

«Omara Es Cuba – El Último Beso»

Omar Portuondo surely needs no introduction. The songstress that became a world star with the Buena Vista Social Club? The Grande Dame of Cuban music that still bubbles with so much wit and charm? Who also with 88 years is moved to tears when she sings a Filin or Bolero? Now, after over 70 years on the stage, she is on her final tour and sings a selection of her favourite songs, accompanied by her most loyal travelling companion. Her appearance in Moods will be the only one in such an intimate setting.

Here is where structures get demolished and boundaries ignored. In his compositions the young Londoner pianist Ashley Henry blends Jazz with Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop and R’n’B and does not shy away from giving his creativity free rein – for example, for his EP “Easter” (2018), he newly arranged the song “The World is Yours” by the rapper NAS. We can look forward to Henry’s debut album which is to be released during 2019.

Vaudou Game

What happens here is hypnotic. The band Vaudou Game from Lyon, France, with their charismatic singer from Togo portray Afro-Funk, like it was created in the 70’s in Benin and Togo. Therefore, there, where voodoo belongs to the folk culture and also bequeathed its ecstatic magic to music. With frontman Peter Solo and his musical companions, it will be grooving on to trance state - without compromise. It’s as if one melted James Brown and Fela Kuti into a new superfunk. Thanks to their first album, Vaudou Game has become one of Europe’s most spectacular Afro bands. Now we have the second edition, which is no less brilliant. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Brian Jackson Trio

Brian Jackson became known together with Gil Scott-Heron. In this power-duo, within only 8 years, he wrote, arranged and produced more than ten albums. His music is to be found on over 100 tracks such as «The People» (on «We Almost Lost Detroit») or Kendrick Lamars «Poe Mans Dreams» (on «Peace Go With You, Brother»). Almost 40 years later Brian Jackson works with such diverse artistes as Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Midnight Hour, A Tribe Called Quest), the singer Gregory Porter, Christopher «Puma» Smith (The Archives, Thievery Corporation), the jazz violinist Scott Tixier or the legendary bassist Charnett Moffett. In the process he takes inspiratinon from both the present and the past: «This music is not really mine. I have learnt it from those who came before me. It is my task, to relate, what I have learned. The detailed admission rules are listed here: https://www.moods.club/en/program/admission-rules-covid/ The duo Ester Poly comprises Martina Berther on electro-bass from Zurich and Béatrice Graf on drums from Geneva. Their music moves between Psychedelic Rock, Punk and New Wave with political and socio-critical song texts. Since the foundation in 2013 the duo has played over 160 concerts in Switzerland and abroad, from big club and festival stages to small DIY gigs. On their second album, «WET», (release on 20. August 2021 on the Swiss label Hummus Records) the two musicians now expand the possibility of the bass + drum tandem with unforeseen sounds and influences from improvised music. The result of the mix is a freshly squeezed Ester-Poly juice with a bitter socio-critical aftertaste.

«FLY OR DIE»

Jaimie Branch has already contributed to a broad palette of projects, not only in Jazz, but also in Punk, Noise, Indie-Rock and Hip-Hop. Rather less well known, yet equally enchanting, is her work as composer and producer. These can first be discovered on her debut album «Fly or Die»: a 35-minute ride through all sorts of musical genres that knows no boundaries - always held together by the spooky sounds that she extracts from her trumpet.

Blind Boys of Alabama

A 75-year band history, which from The Institute for the Black Blind from the era of racial discrimination has led to several concerts in The White House: The Blind Boys of Alabama are a unique gospel band. Even when only two of the original band members remain, they continue the work and have just released a new album «Almost Home» (2017). The title suggests that the gentlemen are nearer to the end than the beginning – yet that does not stop them from delivering their life-affirming gospel sound to the audience.

Schrödingers Katze

Galactic Rhodes sounds and booming Moog basses, driving drum beats, and it doesn&#x27;t really matter whether it&#x27;s jazz, rock or electronic music. Under the name Schrödingers Katze, Simon Althaus and Manuel Pasquinelli - two musical border crossers without stylistic blinkers - play science fiction pop for a lost but somehow still beautiful world. And so the band will take us on a playful, atmospheric and above all groovy musical journey from which there is no escape.

Leenalchi

Leenalchi shows us how experimental and avant-garde the K-pop scene can be. The band from Seoul has dedicated itself to reinterpreting the Korean storytelling genre Pansori, which is characterized by a special performance style with vocals and percussion. The band sings verses of traditional Korean fairy tales and draws musical inspiration from alt-rock and eighties new wave. By dissecting and rearranging traditional elements, the result is music that is forward-looking, but at the same time strongly rooted in tradition. In Korea itself, the band has long been established, filling concert halls, winning various Korean Music Awards, and appearing in a Netflix production. Leenalchi gained international attention in 2020 with their song Tiger Is Coming and subsequently thrilled audiences at renowned festivals including Roskilde, Pohoda, Womad, Fusion and the FMM Festival.

Quiet Tree

Quiet Tree is a Swiss trio consisting of Simon Spiess (saxophone / reeds), Jonas Reuther (drums) and Marc Méan (piano &amp; synths). Their music is rooted in the rich, mercurial soil of this thing we tend to call jazz. Unpacking the tree metaphor a bit further: the crown of this elegant being reaches for, and opens up into, the sprawling cosmic dimensions of the unsound, all types of potential sonic after-futures and echoes of worlds beyond! The band describes their music as an 80s-pop-type sort of warmth, but with a space-jazz approach lifted and transported back somewhere around the year 2040. The project’s key focus is working with the song-form. Every member is responsible for submitting compositions and every piece that makes the final cut, gets a mild improv-based facelift every time it gets played. Their manifesto reads: To tell rich stories using sound, capture colour and energy with melodies. Make sure to leave ample space for every instrument to breathe! Everything is possible as long as it expresses a core unity. Transpose the awareness of space to listeners, because you can never go wrong with making extra space for others.

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird. Das Konzert fand im Rahmen des ZKB Jazzpreis statt.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Moods Summer Special

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Yarima Blanco Y Son Latino

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich.

Summer Pearl

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. Ihr Sound aus Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop und Dub, der an diejenigen der grossen Eryka Badu erinnert, ist mächtig und zugleich berührend. Summer Pearl beschreibt ihn als «eine Meditation über meine Vergangenheit und eine Reflexion über unsere Gegenwart. Die in der DR Kongo Kinshasa geborene und in der Schweiz aufgewachsene Sängerin und Multi-Instrumentalistin hat in den letzten zehn Jahren ihren eigenen, hausgemachten Stil zwischen Afro, Neo Soul und Trip Hop entwickelt. Eine unvergessliche Stimme trifft auf kongolesische Perkussionsfreude und überraschende Flöteneinlagen und setzt Kräfte frei, bei denen der Optimismus zurückkehrt und das Tanzen unausweichlich wird. Ein Sound, der ein neues Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit schafft und das Versprechen, dass alles gut werden wird. Alina Amuri verbindet in ihrer Musik Einflüsse aus Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone und Alicia Keys mit einem frischen, lebendigen Twist. Alina wurde schon für SRF 3 Best Talent ausgewählt, war schon für den wichtigsten Schweizer Musikpreis nominiert (Swiss Music Awards) und gewann mit ihrem letzten Album (Chasing Traces) den Swiss Live Talent Award. An diesem Konzert wird Alina Amuri ihr nächstes Studioalbum «Back To You» vorstellen. Es ist die bisher persönlichste Platte und erzählt von ihrer Reise zurück in ihre Geburtsstadt Kinshasa, zurück zu ihren familiären Wurzeln.

The instrumentation loses its typical role models through the experimentation with preparations, electronic effects, playing techniques, together with sophisticated concepts for composotion and improvisation. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

With A Shake Stew, Austria&#x27;s Jazz band of the hour, much is extraordinary. Starting with the line-up: two drummers, two bass players, two saxophones, a trumpet. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Music that reveals a hypnotic spell, one wants to soak up every note, to dance, to shake oneself and hope that it will never stop.

Based out of Berlin, Germany, electro-acoustic composer Hainbach (*1978 Freiburg im Breisgau) creates experimental music that is both visceral and whimsical. Using esoteric synthesizers, test equipment and magnetic tape he creates “one hell of a trip” in his live sets and recorded music. He shares techniques on experimental music on his YouTube channel, which has attracted an ever growing audience of more than 180000 subscribers and over 16 Million views, with several videos going viral. His body of work includes film soundtracks, pop productions, chamber music, theater music, sound art installations and music software. Hainbach’s music has been featured in Pitchfork, The Wire, Bandcamp Daily, Bleep and Boomkat.

Simon Spiess Late Bloøm

Woodwinds

Late Bloøm is the solo project of Simon Spiess, who takes on the role of multi-instrumentalist for this project. He is inspired by unknown instruments, which he gets to know through in-depth processes and thus creates new worlds of sound. Late Bloøm is a composer, sound researcher and sound architect. Although he is best known for his warm, soulful and transcendent sound on the saxophone, the musician is also a beast when it comes to sound design. He&#x27;s quick to admit that he creates beauty from a deep searching force: combining vintage woodwinds, modular synthesizers, tattoos and aesthetics. When he&#x27;s not busy practicing the saxophone or meticulously chiseling sounds, you&#x27;re likely to find him doing an intense mindfulness exercise. His music covers a wide spectrum of raw emotions, from calming to unsettling. Presence, connection and an appreciation of the full spectrum of the human experience are a through line in his work. That and the stark, contrasting contrasts (black and white, sometimes misty, metallic gray), punctuated by unexpected twists of garish pink!

Nicole Johänntgen&#x27;s Labyrinth is groovy, experimental, sometimes melancholic and here and there you can hear the flair of the Motown era of the 70s. After the successful and energetic evening in spring 2024, Johänntgen, Hansen and Stauffacher return to Moods - this time with the sequel - Labyrinth II. When the saxophonist creates music, she likes to look deep, reflect and feel life. While the unconventional line-up of saxophone, tuba (Jon Hansen) and percussion (David Stauffacher) offers unexpected new possibilities, Nicole Johänntgen remains true to her soulful, expressive and virtuoso playing, in which saxophone and vocals alternate in unexpected, artistic ways.

This duo combines tradition and innovation in a fascinating way. Gisler&#x27;s melodic and harmonic sophistication weaves a thread through jazz tradition, while Bruecker&#x27;s unconventional voice and lyrics catapult the whole thing to a new level of abstraction and experimentation. Together, they are a duo that knows its roots, yet continues to discover and redefine new creative forms of expression.

Over the years, the Pilgrim Quintet, led by Zurich tenor saxophonist Christoph Irniger, has developed into one of the most exciting ensembles in the young European jazz scene. On the occasion of Dave Gisler&#x27;s Carte Blanche at Moods, the well-rehearsed band will be joined by the unique singer Yumi Ito, who is regarded as one of the most outstanding representatives of vocal improvisation. Their connection is storytelling, creating an all-encompassing sound that defies categorisation. Some compositions are freely improvised, others are fully notated, but most are somewhere in between, with a flexibility that reflects a life of freedom where informed choices are made spontaneously. The sound is correspondingly varied: an amalgam of all kinds of styles, small or large, bright or dark. An experience of feelings and images that Hannah Gottschalk translates live into sound-reactive visual performances characterised by abstraction and an interplay of artistic intention and improvisation.

SOYUZ (СОЮЗ)

SOYUZ is a creative collective from Minsk, Belarus, that combines the rich sounds of classical Brazilian music with a modern, global perspective. ‘Force of the Wind’, the third album of the trio consisting of Alex Chumak, Mikita Arlou and Anton Nemahai, builds unexpected bridges between the Música Popular Brasileira of the 70s and today&#x27;s Belarus. With a mixture of Russian and Portuguese lyrics, cosy-warm sounds and jazzy-groovy beats, SOYUZ create emotional compositions and wonderful, nostalgic moments that transcend language.

He is “a genius and living proof that the blues comes from Mali,” says Taj Mahal about his colleague Bassekou Kouyaté. He is the undisputed master of the ngoni (traditional West African long necked spit lute), which he has made internationally known by adding additional strings and using effects devices. With his extraordinary dexterity, he creates soundscapes that lie somewhere between blues, jazz and traditional Malian music. In his traditional Griotprogram “Folo Djelia” he reinterprets his parents&#x27; music and is accompanied by his wife, the fantastic singer Amy Sacko. A concert with a chamber music character that gets under your skin.

MERCADONEGRO - They are probably the best salsa band in Europe and are going on tour in Switzerland with their new album SE ACABÓ EL CUENTO. Mercadonegro has become one of the most sought-after groups for Latin American music over the years. Founded by José Armando Miranda, Cesar Correa and Rodrigo Rodriguez, the trio has grown over the years into a twelve-piece band with roots in Latin America and an adopted home in Europe. They are passionate about taking salsa out into the world and infect every audience with their enthusiasm. No leg will stay still and no shirt will stay dry!

EMEL became known as the figurehead of the Jasmine Revolution and the revolutionary voice of young Tunisia; and her song &#x27;Kelmti Hourra&#x27; (&#x27;My word is free&#x27;) became an anthem of the movement. Now the singer is coming back with a new album, with the same evocative power and rallying lyrics, but in a new musical guise. Inspired by musicians such as Rosalía, Aya Nakamura and Charlie XCX, the result is a powerful and feminist album with influences from hyper-pop, hip-hop, electronica and reggaeton: &#x27;MRA&#x27; is a danceable, hard-hitting rebirth. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.
