Sélène Saint-Aimé only appeared on the music scene a few years ago and has already developed a strong, independent identity. With a father from Martinique and a Franco-Ivorian mother, she describes herself as an Afro-descendant. Accordingly, her musical identity is clearly cosmopolitan, as she is influenced by both her roots and her travels. In this exclusive concert series, she will reinterpret songs from Louisiana, the West Indies and La Réunion and get to the bottom of her Creole identity. She will be accompanied by Cedric Watson, one of the most distinguished violinists for Creole Southern music, and Guillaume Latil, one of the most sought-after jazz cellists.

Album Release «Neat Little Songs»

The long and very fruitful artistic relationship between Thomas Gansch and the ZJO has now been immortalized on a studio recording. This new CD will be presented on May 22nd at Moods. The program consists exclusively of compositions by Thomas Gansch, arranged by Ed Partyka. In addition to Thomas, the soloists of the ZJO can also be heard extensively. The music is profound and humorous at the same time and combines elements of jazz, classical and folk music with unexpected detours into the world of film music and 20th century pop culture. Almost exactly eleven years have passed since Thomas Gansch&#x27;s first performance with the ZJO. Today he is a good friend of the band and a favorite of the ZJO audience. The basic concept therefore remains the same for the joint CD: musical fireworks, fun, unconventional, crazy. Gansch and the ZJO have already performed everything imaginable together: Gil Evans, Don Ellis, their own music. And Thomas Gansch&#x27;s own music can now be heard on the new CD. Thomas Gansch and Ed Partyka have known each other for half an eternity. They met in 1999 at the Vienna Art Orchestra, and later Ed Partyka also played in Thomas Gansch&#x27;s band Gansch &amp; Roses. We have known each other for so long, but until now I have never had the opportunity to arrange his music for a jazz orchestra. I am very pleased that this has finally become possible and that we can present this special program with new arrangements with the ZJO on a joint disc, says Ed Partyka. Thomas Gansch not only has a keen awareness of the history of popular music and jazz, his roots also extend to Alpine folk music and the entire history of European classical music. All this profound knowledge is wrapped up in Viennese humor and presented with a great stage show and virtuoso trumpet playing. Listening to him, you get the impression that playing the trumpet is very easy.

He is a jazz pianist, composer, music producer - and a fixture on the London jazz scene: Greg Foat. In his pieces, Foat mixes jazz and ambient with electronic influences, creating unique soundscapes that invite immersion and exploration. Greg Foat is an innovator, always pushing the boundaries of his music. He recently collaborated with Venetian electro legend Gigi Masin on the critically acclaimed «Dolphin». His creativity knows no bounds. His live releases are proof of this. On «Live at Can Rudayla, Ibiza», for example, he fuses analogue synthesizers with ambient house and space jazz, while on «Live at Villa Maximus, Mykonos», he combines more cosmic jazz sounds with psychedelic elements. Foat will perform at Moods with the living groove machine Moses Boyd. The young jazz drummer, who turns 34 this year, has been described by the Guardian as the poster boy of London&#x27;s jazz revival.

For pianist Michael Wollny, the trio with bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Eric Schaefer is the constant in his otherwise constantly changing cosmos of collaborations. The three musicians share an almost inexhaustible musical vocabulary, an outstanding sensitivity when playing together and the ability to constantly create new music of tremendous tension and dynamism from the moment. The band is a unity of three unmistakable characters: Michael Wollny is regarded as one of the most important European pianists of his generation. His playing blends influences from jazz, classical music, indie pop, new and early music to create an unmistakable personal style. Wollny has been playing together with drummer Eric Schaefer for more than 20 years. They share a deep intimacy and at the same time the ability to surprise and challenge each other time and again. American Tim Lefebvre forms the foundation of the trio, with a weighty tone, rock-solid groove and a fine sense of dramaturgy. Together, Wollny, Schaefer and Lefebvre create music of exuberant dynamics, boundless variety and maximum urgency. With reference to the origins of the piano trio format, the British Jazzwise Magazine writes: The Michael Wollny Trio makes it clear that we are living in the 21st century and not in the 1960s!

The carte blanche evenings at Moods are something special. Curated by leading Swiss jazz musicians, these evenings invite you to discover and inspire. And what&#x27;s better than an artist&#x27;s carte blanche evening? When all the musicians join forces. Every year, the Moods Musicians&#x27; Council selects Swiss musicians for a Carte Blanche. With a budget of 11,000 francs, they are free to organise their projects as they wish. There are (almost) no limits – be it concerts, sound installations or invitations to guest musicians. Dave Gisler, Franziska Bruecker, Jonas Ruther, Lucas Niggli, Roberto Domeniconi, Simon Grab, Tizia Zimmermann and Victoria Mozalevskaya have come up with something special to close this year&#x27;s Carte Blanche season at Moods. Solo, trio or all together: Moods Carte Blanche artists will showcase their talents in a variety of constellations on 6th June. Instead of concentrating on their own musical creations, as they did in their individual shows, they will create unique soundscapes together on this evening. Familiar patterns and genre boundaries are completely ignored. For example, while Simon Grab - the noisemaker par excellence - is completely electronic, Victoria Mozalevskaya originally comes from classical music and has now dedicated herself to contemporary jazz. Blending notes of R&amp;B, Blues and rap with the waves of soul. The Bahian artist had a striking start to her career, featuring in the Latin Grammy nominated song “AmarElo” alongside Emicida and Pablo Vittar. Majur’s debut album “Ojunifé” (2021), documents her journey of self-discovery and features collaborations with Liniker and Luedji Luna, reinforcing the message of diversity and black affection. She made her international debut at the Roskilde Festival and has been featured in major Brazilian lineups such as Rock in Rio. With a powerful musical presence, Majur merges African, Indigenous, and modern influences, solidifying her place in the music scene.

Songhoy Blues

A musical ban decreed by Islamistic fighters was the trigger for these four young men from Mali for the foundation of their band. Songhoy Blues do not care about clanship or religion, their music is intended to unite people and encourage peace. As beautiful as this story sounds, as gripping is their sound: desert blues à la Tinariwen enriched with powerful guitars, which sound rocky, funky, or bluesy, depending on where they come from. In contrast to their debut album, the texts on their second CD «Résistance» (2017) deal less with the political upheaval in Mali, rather they thematise the beauty of the Sahara and the pulsating nightlife of Bamako. Sometimes meditative, sometimes cinematic, with rhythmic elements that evolve, complement each other and develop into a driving maelstrom: Mammal Hands play a driving fusion of jazz and electronica that never loses its accessibility despite its complexity. On the contrary, the trio&#x27;s energetic live performances can put you in an almost trance-like state. The band is now on the road with their fifth album &quot;Gift from the Trees&quot; (2023) - a must for all fans of Portico Quartet, Gogo Penguin or Grandbrothers.

Under the direction of Shuya Okino, with Vanessa Freeman on lead vocals, KJM will be supported by the powerful Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra, showcasing their unique crossover vision from jazz-funk, broken beat, and soulful house to cosmic grooves and everything in between! Born in DR Congo Kinshasa and raised in Switzerland, the singer and multi-instrumentalist has developed her own homemade style between Afro, Neo Soul and Trip Hop in the last ten years. An unforgettable voice meets Congolese percussion joy and surprising flute interludes, releasing forces where optimism returns and dancing becomes inevitable. A sound that creates a new sense of togetherness and the promise that everything will be alright. Alina Amuri&#x27;s music combines influences from Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone and Alicia Keys with a fresh, lively twist. Alina has already been selected for SRF 3 Best Talent, has been nominated for the most important Swiss music award (Swiss Music Awards) and won the Swiss Live Talent Award with her last album (Chasing Traces). At this concert Alina Amuri will present her next studio album Back To You. It is the most personal record so far and tells about her journey back to her birthplace Kinshasa, back to her family roots.

Rather less well known, yet equally enchanting, is her work as composer and producer. These can first be discovered on her debut album «Fly or Die»: a 35-minute ride through all sorts of musical genres that knows no boundaries - always held together by the spooky sounds that she extracts from her trumpet.

Dobet Gnahoré likes to put a spell on the audience over and again. For some it is her voice – powerful, yet sensitive – that gets straight under the skin, for others it is her stage presence and breathtaking dance sets. On her current album, “Miziki” (2018), the songstress and songwriter from the Ivory Coast includes electronic elements in her music for the first time and thus creates an even more energetic Afro sound than before. When in Spring 2018 Bill Frisell played Moods together with Thomas Morgan, he played a breathtaking concert and left behind an amazed audience. Now Frisell - one of the most influential and innovative jazz guitarists of the 90&#x27;s - is back with his trio. When the guitarist performs with Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen, it is impossible to predict in which direction the concert will head: song for song it will be decided what comes next; that could be tracks from Frisell&#x27;s countless albums, standards or other songs, which match the mood and the audience.

Sheila Jordan

Sheila Jordan, the «First Lady of Bebop», is characterised by a voice deployed like an instrument and unique hearing that allows her to fully respond to her fellow musicians. The 88-year old songstress is well-known for her scat singing, spontaneous text improvisations, and sensitive song interpretations, which she always delivers with a captivating presence. As personal friend and stage partner to jazz legends such as Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins, there is probably no one more qualified to revive a piece of jazz history.

Leenalchi

Leenalchi shows us how experimental and avant-garde the K-pop scene can be. The band from Seoul has dedicated itself to reinterpreting the Korean storytelling genre Pansori, which is characterized by a special performance style with vocals and percussion. The band sings verses of traditional Korean fairy tales and draws musical inspiration from alt-rock and eighties new wave. By dissecting and rearranging traditional elements, the result is music that is forward-looking, but at the same time strongly rooted in tradition. In Korea itself, the band has long been established, filling concert halls, winning various Korean Music Awards, and appearing in a Netflix production. Leenalchi gained international attention in 2020 with their song Tiger Is Coming and subsequently thrilled audiences at renowned festivals including Roskilde, Pohoda, Womad, Fusion and the FMM Festival.

There are pieces that create a unique, poignant atmosphere with the very first note. &quot;Flash Info&quot; by the Julie Campiche Quartet is one of those. All four musicians use electronic effects to create a fragile yet powerful soundscape in which composition and improvisation are balanced. At the same time, the music leaves plenty of room to breathe and creates impressive sonic contrasts. Julie Campiche&#x27;s musical language is shaped by the big questions of her generation: the vast amounts of radioactive waste, multimedia sensory overload and the search for identity in the digital age.The musical language of experimental jazz harpist, singer, composer, producer and bandleader Julie Campiche is the result of constant curiosity and innovation in music and her great interest in the state of the world. Jazz, classical, electronic music and last but not least avant-garde traits permeate her music - exposing an immediate fragility that sometimes delicately, sometimes powerfully scratches the limit without ever exceeding it. In this way Campiche, who must be called a pioneer of harp jazz, has created her very own music that is unparalleled.

Othella Dallas is back in Moods - and that at 92 years of age! Born in 1925 in Memphis, the dancer and songstress began her singing career already at 25 and was soon standing on stage with the greats of jazz such as Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Sammy Davis jr., Nat King Cole. She has been living in Switzerland since the 60&#x27;s and became recognised nationally with her album «I Live the Life I Love». The little girl from Memphis became the Grand Old Lady of Jazz, Blues and Funk and the Lady is still able - even with her advancing years - to enchant and inspire the audience with her charismatic personality.

Skate Concepts. After five years and many tours throughout Europe, UASSYN has finally released their long awaited debut album ZACHARYA (Double Moon Records/Jazzthing). In connection with a «secret» set in the Oberer Letten Skaterpartk, the band celebrates the release of their first and thus returns to their home town of Zürich. Can we expect a Half Pipe in Moods? Gasandji

The power lady from the Congo has a mind of her own and on stage fascinates us with her presence, her refinement and her empathy. Gasandji means something like «She that awakens the awareness». One could not describe the intention behind her music more appropriately. With her high, clear voice, sometimes tender and melancholic, sometimes full of power, she attests to the big topics such as love, hope and suffering. In the process she wanders between Jazz, Soul, Reggae and the sounds of her ancestors. «I want to bring the people closer to my home, without losing sight of the here and now», she says about her music. He is an icon of Neo-Soul: the American singer Bilal. The texts are political and critical of society, the sound moves between Soul, Hip-Hop, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. His voice winds itself smoothly around all pitches and comes over sometimes soft, then again powerful. Down the years Bilal has worked together with the greats such as Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper and Kendrick Lamar and has developed into one of the most sought after exponents of the genre.

This is how Brasilian music sounds away from Samba, football and exotic kitsch: «Noite Brasileira» strongly representsthe young, Brasilian power-ladies and their new music from abroadund ihrer neuen Musik aus Übersee. They were labeled by no less than Caetano Veloso as the «The future of Brasilian music». With their cool sound, the 37-year-old Céu from São Paulo builds bridges to Europe. Her very sensuous, unobtrusive voice and an adventurous style mix, which can be described as a fusion of Samba, Reggae and electronica with a hint of Jazz, Soul and Urban Folk, has already brought the songstress four Grammy nominations in three categories. Her fourth album, «Tropix», which musically follows its predecessor, was released in 2016 and features restrained excursions into disco music, yet sounds somewhat rougher and more urban. Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird. Das Konzert fand im Rahmen des ZKB Jazzpreis statt.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich.

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. The instrumentation loses its typical role models through the experimentation with preparations, electronic effects, playing techniques, together with sophisticated concepts for composotion and improvisation. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

With A Shake Stew, Austria&#x27;s Jazz band of the hour, much is extraordinary. Starting with the line-up: two drummers, two bass players, two saxophones, a trumpet. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Music that reveals a hypnotic spell, one wants to soak up every note, to dance, to shake oneself and hope that it will never stop.

Two musicians invent a new state of intoxication: no drugs, just drums, organ and electric guitar. Valeria Zangger, Dominik Blum and Dave Gisler leave times and styles behind when they create their music. Motifs, essences and quotations are taken from the pool of rock, pop and their own musical worlds and catapulted into new dimensions through improvisation. The result can be a cross between Pink Floyd and free jazz, or a noise prayer with Jimi Hendrix and Arnold Schoenberg. This trio was initiated by drummer Fredy Studer, who died unexpectedly in August 2022. Valeria Zangger is now on board, with a stylistic spectrum ranging from pop music to experimental and free improvisation. The interweaving of the most diverse musical hallucinations characterises the trio and is the chemical formula for their explosive fuel. What they have in common is the desire to create energetic sound processes inspired by the history of rock and jazz, which vibrate atmospherically in the free play of encounters and can grow into powerful vibrations.

Flo Stoffner

&quot;Free improvisation at its best&quot; is what Swiss guitarist Flo Stoffner embodies in a unique way. His way of playing and deconstructing the guitar is unmistakable and unique and has been described as &quot;some kind of autopsy of the guitar sound&quot;. Solo or in collaboration with musicians such as John Butcher, Chris Corsano, Paul Lovens, Rudi Mahall, Albert Cirera and Hans Koch, but also with spoken word artist Anna Frey or with Anna &amp; Stoffner, he has become one of the outstanding figures of the European improvisation scene. Looking back as well as forward, he raises the banner of instant composing and proves again and again how alive, surprising and up-to-date the tradition of free improvisation is today.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Theo Bleckmann

Ed Partyka and Theo Bleckmann have worked together on several projects in Germany and Finland since 2007, and as Theo is the new jazz vocal teacher at the ZHDK, a collaboration with the ZJO was but a matter of time. Originally this was supposed to happen last season, but unfortunate circumstances made a postponement necessary. Ed Partyka will arrange Theo&#x27;s own compositions as well as a broad repertoire ranging from jazz standards to songs by Kate Bush for Theo&#x27;s unique voice and combine them with the many interesting instrumental textures and timbres of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. A very special vocal jazz concert. Theo Bleckmann is a multiple GRAMMY®-nominated singer, composer and ECM recording artist who has recorded more than 17 albums and collaborated with artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Sheila Jordan, Kneebody, Ben Monder, John Hollenbeck, Phil Kline, David Lang, Ulysses Owens, Bang on a Can All-Stars and, most notably, Meredith Monk since 1994. Bleckmann was interviewed by Terry Gross on the NPR program Fresh Air and appeared on the David Letterman Show with Laurie Anderson. He consistently tops the DownBeat polls, and in his home country of Germany he was awarded the prestigious JAZZ ECHO by the German Phono Academy.

Lucas Niggli – GLUT4

Tomorrow Tribal&#x27; stands for playing, for risk, for immediacy - and at the same time for maximum precision. Lucas Niggli&#x27;s commissioned work for the Tomorrow Tribal Quartet, which includes himself on drums as well as Brian Archinal (no-input mixer, vibraphone, megaphone, percussion), Gilles Grimaître (piano, Korg organ) and Sascha Armbruster (soprano saxophone, tubax), is based on a set of 16 playing cards that dictate the dramaturgy of the music. Each card depicts a specific musical motif, inspired by the four musicians playing together and by unique expressions in different, sometimes obscure, languages. Lagom&quot; (Swedish for &quot;not too much and not too little, just right&quot;), &quot;Ukiyo&quot; (Japanese for &quot;living in the moment&quot;) or &quot;Kephaloporosis&quot; (ancient Greek for a usually temporary state of mental confusion after intense stress) head the motif cards; these are terms that have no literal translation - they are as unique as the four musicians&#x27; musical languages. Each member of the quartet has all 16 cards and can play each one once. There is a playing table in the middle of the Boiler Room. When a new card is played, the other musicians can decide whether to jump straight to the new motif, &#x27;morph&#x27; from the old to the new, or not react at all. The piece thrives on spontaneous, intuitive musical action, so every performance will be unique. Only the groovy, melodic final canon, which the quartet will enter just before the end of the 45-minute performance, has been composed. Tomorrow Tribal will be an explosive and playful musical frenzy, full of surprises - and the odd joker will be thrown in for good measure.

Here, structures are broken up and boundaries are explored! London-based pianist and singer Ashley Henry mixes jazz with neo-soul, hip-hop and R&#x27;n&#x27;B in his compositions. The result is a groovy sound that offers room for breakbeats as well as Henry&#x27;s lyrical and playful piano solos. In a short space of time, Ashley Henry has developed from a newcomer to an important voice in the British jazz scene.

The Zürich Jazz Kollektiv is a new contemporary jazz ensemble born out of the desire to create a creative network of local musicians to represent, cultivate and develop contemporary jazz in Switzerland. The ensemble sees itself as a platform for musical innovation and collaboration that both enriches the genre and strengthens and inspires the community of local jazz musicians. The collective&#x27;s music is penned by its founder, tenor saxophonist Victoria Mozalevskaya, and unfolds through the ensemble&#x27;s collaborative vision in energetic live performances and sophisticated arrangements. Joining them for the grand opening is none other than Alex Sipiagin, a longtime member of the big bands of Charles Mingus and George Gruntz and a fellow musician with jazz greats such as Dave Holland and Randy Brecker.

Anyone who has experienced Nikki Hill singing her heart out knows that this woman is like a thunderbolt! Loud, bright and electrifying! Together with husband and guitarist Matt Hill and her ‘Pirate Crew’, the North Carolina-born singer is finally bringing her unmistakable Deep South Soul back to Moods. With unfiltered energy, they take on all varieties of American roots music and deliver a sound that makes you believe in rock and roll again. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Portable Infinity

Portable Infinity is the name of the Scandinavian-American project. The All-star quartet not only has jazz history with it, but also personal meetings with greats such as Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield and Esbjörn Svensson. A lot is connected here: the long experience, the openness to new things and the pure desire to play. “As a child I was always inventing something,” says Benjamin Koppel. “I invented a whole world and a language for this world. I use all that in my music.” The Danish saxophonist and award-winning novelist is a defining figure of European jazz, always in exchange with the American tradition. In the quartet he meets the magically grooving drummer Magnus Öström – a former member of the legendary EST, the incredibly versatile bassist Scott Colley and the energetic pianist Jacob Karlzon, for whom every concert is an event: “For me, performing live in front of an audience is the original place for music, an ecstatic experience for both sides.”

Tribute to Bill Holman 

Big band musicians around the world mourn the passing of master composer and arranger Bill Holman, who died on May 6, 2024 at the age of 97. His long and prolific career spanned seven decades and produced hundreds of compositions and arrangements that have become beloved core repertoire of big bands and favorites of their audiences around the world. The last time Bill Holman was in Switzerland (2014), he conducted a concert of his music with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, which remains one of the most memorable performances in the ZJO&#x27;s long history. Our musical directors Daniel Schenker and Ed Partyka met in 1996 as members of the Generations Festival Big Band in Frauenfeld, which was conducted by - you guessed it - Bill Holman. The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will celebrate the wonderful music and long life of Bill Holman on March 27, performing some of his most popular works as well as some rarely heard gems that highlight the orchestra and its outstanding soloists.

Jonas Ruther

The story of Ingoma Busuku began with an initial contact between Jonas Ruther and South African saxophonist Linda Sikakhane. Mediated by Nduduzo Makhathini, the two had originally planned to tour Switzerland in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the tour had to be postponed several times before finally taking place in 2022. On the subsequent tour in South Africa, they also performed with singer Paras Dlamini. This tour will be his first appearance in Europe. The band&#x27;s name &#x27;Ingoma Busuku&#x27; also comes from the South African singing tradition and means &#x27;song of the night&#x27; in isiZulu, referring to the lyrics, which are deeply rooted in the Zulu tradition and at the same time reflect universal themes such as love, spirituality and connection to the ancestors. The band combines these with groovy rhythms, spiritual melodies and fine improvisation. During their tour of South Africa, the band recorded their first album, &#x27;Isambulo&#x27; (2022), produced by none other than Nduduzo Makhathini.

Leyla McCalla

Deeply influenced by Creole music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla&#x27;s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Konkolo Orchestra

The Konkolo Orchestra is a Zurich-based band centred around multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Alexis Malefakis. Their debut single «Blue G» (2022) was already a hit, now the album «Future Pasts» (2024) follows, a collection of funky to jazzy Afrobeat and highlife songs. An exuberant atmosphere and dancing mood are guaranteed when the Konkolo Orchestra performs in front of the audience with its light-hearted lyrics, cheerful melodies and a powerful brass section. This concert is free of charge, but admission is only guaranteed with a valid reservation.
