The ten-piece band from the vibrant district of Bixiga in São Paulo has caused a sensation with spectacular live shows since its formation in 2010 (Roskilde, WOMAD, Montreal Jazz Festival, Glastonbury, Sziget, North Sea Jazz Festival, Le Guess Who? and many more). Bixiga 70 is inspired by the Afro-Brazilian soundscape and fuses samba rhythms with the free spirit of jazz and infectious funk grooves. Their music breathes new life into Brazil&#x27;s musical heritage. Brazilian authenticity fuses with a global perspective, creating a sound that is both rooted in tradition and looking to the future. Live Ambient Guitar Support: Joel Gilardini Nik Bärtsch and Simone Felber were commissioned to compose a piece for the Alpentöne 2025 festival and decided to pursue a project together. This is how RONIN meets iheimisch with «Wätterglüüt». Customs and tradition become music and music becomes customs. Which came first, the custom or the music? Stories interweave with reality, grooves with rhymes. «Wätterglüüt» oscillates between archaic, contemporary and political influences, balancing the enduring and the new. The program pays tribute to important aspects and people of our tradition and at the same time puts new customs in front of them. With this composition, Nik Bärtsch&#x27;s RONIN and Simone Felber&#x27;s iheimisch move forward to the roots and thus back to the future. After performing at Moods in October 2025, the artists continued working and developing the program and in turn, will return for another performance.

Widely celebrated for her profound artistry, Anupama Bhagwat is one of the foremost exponents of the Imdadkhani gharana. Her musical journey began at a young age, shaped by early training on violin and vocals before the sitar became her lifelong companion. A distinguished disciple of the legendary Pandit Bimalendu Mukherjee, she has mastered the nuanced gayaki style—bringing to the sitar a lyrical expressiveness modeled on the human voice. With a performance career spanning continents since 1995, Anupama has graced leading festivals, collaborated with eminent musicians, and received critical acclaim for her emotive depth, scintillating taans, and meditative alaaps. Her playing is often described as a seamless blend of technical brilliance and spiritual sensitivity, drawing listeners into a rich world of melody, introspection, and artistic finesse. She will be accompanied by Manish Madankar, an accomplished tabla player who has performed across India, Europe, China, Singapore, and Russia. A versatile artist, he is equally at home as a soloist and as an accompanist for instrumental, vocal, kathak, and fusion performances. Trained under eminent maestros such as Pandit Sandesh Popatkar and Pandit Yogesh Samsi, he currently teaches tabla in Italy. Together, this duo promises an immersive musical journey through the rich tapestry of Hindustani classical tradition—an evening of melody, rhythm, and artistic dialogue.

Marta Pereira da Costa is an instrumentalist, composer, and bandleader who masterfully plays the Portuguese guitar. She broke tradition in a field historically dominated by men, becoming the first woman to play the Portuguese guitar professionally in Fado. In 2014, she received the Instrumentalist Award from the Amália Rodrigues Foundation, and in 2016, she released her self-titled debut album with Warner Music Portugal, featuring renowned artists such as Rui Veloso, Dulce Pontes, Camané, Richard Bona, and Tara Tiba. Since then, she has performed on prestigious stages including the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Center, and her Tiny Desk NPR (2023) performance has surpassed one million views. More recently, she was honored with the Voz do Operário Composition Award (2024) and the Best Instrumental Award at the IPMA Awards (2025). Throughout her career, Marta has taken her music across five continents, performing in countries such as Australia, Brazil, the United States, China, India, Indonesia, Spain, France among many others—establishing herself as one of the leading ambassadors of Portuguese sound worldwide. Her current project transcends borders, presenting the Portuguese guitar as a voice that travels through the traditional sounds of Fado and Portuguese music while also exploring new musical landscapes such as jazz, Cape Verdean morna, Brazilian choro, and world music. Performing in trio format, Marta will be joined by João José Pita Junior on seven-string guitar and Carlos Miguel Antunes on percussion. Together, they will perform pieces from her new album Sem Palavras, such as Verdes Anos, Summertime, Dia de Feira as well as from her debut album (Terra, Encontro, and Fado Lopes). The audience will be invited on a journey of sounds and emotions, where the Portuguese guitar takes center stage—guided by Marta’s sensitivity, intensity, and elegance—for a performance that promises to be as powerful as it is unforgettable. For the past four years, the New Regency Orchestra has been causing a sensation with its powerful twelve-piece horn section and well-rehearsed five-piece rhythm section. The orchestra&#x27;s dancers breathe new energy and arrangements into the heyday of Latin jazz and salsa. The orchestra is the brainchild of artistic director Lex Blondin, who is the man behind the Total Refreshment Centre and the co-founder of the Church of Sound. His longstanding passion for jazz led him to discover the explosive Afro-Cuban rhythms that were popular in 1940s New York thanks to Mario Bauzá, the godfather of Afro-Cuban jazz. This lively music was made for dancing and found a home at the New York Palladium, a place that was crucial to the development of the scene because it was a defining place of freedom and expression. The 18-piece Afro-Cuban jazz big band is one of London&#x27;s most exciting ensembles. It brings the New York of the 1950s to life, featuring the contemporary power and energy of some of London&#x27;s best Latin and jazz musicians. The NRO&#x27;s repertoire reinterprets some of the best pieces from this golden era. They perform pieces by René Hernández and Tito Puente from the early 1950s and salsa by Rafael Labastida and Orlando Marín from the 1970s with fresh London flair.

Habib Koité is one of the great stars of world music. With charisma and skill, he brings the rich musical culture of Mali to a wide audience. His guitar style, inspired by the ngoni lute, combines fine playing with rhythmic drumming and characterizes his special sound. His songs tell of everyday life, history and society in Mali - deeply rooted, but open to the world. His new project is called Mandé Sila - an acoustic quartet that celebrates the diversity of West African musical cultures. Habib Koité is accompanied by three virtuoso artists: the balafon master Aly Keïta (Ivory Coast), the kora player Lamine Cissokho (Senegal), who comes from a famous griot family, and his long-time percussionist Mama Koné (Mali). Together they celebrate the Mandé Sila, the musical path of the Manding empire, which unites the languages, cultures and musical diversity of West Africa. Mandé Sila is not just a musical project, but a moment of cultural encounter and harmony between the artists. The repertoire consists of original compositions that come to life through the mastery of traditional instruments and the fusion of different styles - from West African rhythms to oriental and jazzy influences.

Singing violinist Andrea Kirchhofer and violin-playing singer Irina Ungureanu celebrate the premiere of their musical adventure as a duo. Keen to explore new territory and experiment with language, they create a new soundscape with two violins and two voices, Swiss German and English lyrics, and the occasional interjection of electric guitar. With a minimalist setup, the two musicians lead us into a colourful and melancholic sonic universe full of shrill miniatures, pictorial and slightly bizarre lyrics, fragments of text and an untamed variety of violin sounds. The limited range of the violins and voices calls for unusual arrangements, opening doors to rare sound worlds in the process. Irina Ungureanu, who has a background in contemporary and Romanian folk music, has recently started writing her own Swiss German songs for the duo with Anna Trauffer, &quot;Pelz&quot;, and for &quot;Bondar&quot;. Andrea Kirchhofer&#x27;s combination of voice and violin continues a path she explored until 2018 with her quartet/trio Atrium. The two musicians come together through their play with language and their experiences with musical theatre and new folk music. Since 2024, they have been performing together on stage with the Romansh and Romanian songs of the quintet SORAS.

The Zurich singer-songwriter meets the flamenco guitarist Juan Medina - an encounter between the two musicians in which the musical worlds of folk, flamenco and jazz merge - something new is created. Already at their second meeting, Lea and Juan began to write songs and inspiration bubbled up. This resulted in their debut album Vergel, which means something like: It will be released in January on the Spanish label Satelite K and christened at Moods. The songs are about new beginnings, curiosity about life and the sun of January. Music that moves and touches the hearts of the audience. Juan&#x27;s virtuoso playing style meets Lea&#x27;s minimalist singer-songwriter arrangements: Her soft velvety voice flies over the raw energy of Juan&#x27;s guitar. Open harmonies between flamenco and jazz form the basic framework, above which Lea&#x27;s dancing, velvety voice floats. For the release concert, Lea and Juan will be joined by double bassist Alejandra Lopez from Madrid and jazz trombonist Nils Wogram.

With Rhythm Creature, Patrick Sommer has created an ensemble that behaves like a pulsating organism. The band as a creature is only marginally tamed and indulges its instincts with relish. The musical ideas for this mostly originate from Patrick Sommer&#x27;s preoccupation with the Moroccan guembri, a lute-like, three-stringed instrument from the Western Sahara. The resulting creative output has also had a lasting influence on his approach to his other bass instruments, rhythms, and phrasing. The resulting pieces are characterised by interwoven rhythms, intense moods and captivating melodies. The band members are all groove specialists: Patrick has been working closely with guitarist Michael Bucher for countless years, and he has been playing in various formations with drummer Kaspar Rast, keyboardist Peter Wagner, saxophonist Dave Feusi and percussionist David Stauffacher for almost as long. Rhythm Creature now breathes life into these pieces and releases them into the wild.

The path of the energetic bassist, drummer and singer led from the small town of Divo on the Ivory Coast to the biggest stages in the world. None other than the bass legend Bootsy Collins paved the way for Manou Gallo to be named one of the “Top 10 World Best Bass Players”! Gallo is pure power on the bass, mixing jazz, funk, groove, and Afro beat. Once you’ve experienced her, you immediately recognize her uniqueness: In her hands, the bass sometimes becomes a percussion element, driving the groove to fascinating heights. It’s no wonder Bootsy Collins calls her the “African Queen of Bass”. Other giants like Manu Dibango, Mamady Keita, Wyclef Jean, Marcus Miller, and Lucas van Meerwijk have also taken notice of her and shared stages with her. Proud of her African roots, Gallo says she has the musical freedom to play anything. And it’s precisely this freedom that you’ll find on stage: an explosive mixture of funk, jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and confident Afro grooves. For more than two decades, the band has been synonymous with excessive celebrations, intense encounters and passion. The anniversary is being celebrated under the motto Nossa História De Amor (Our Love Story). Monobloco has always been a great celebration of love: friendships formed during rehearsals, marriages made to the sound of the tambourine and children growing up to the rhythm of the batucada. Adalu, Moods and the Portuguese Consulate in Zurich present the “Lusosonic Festival” - an intimate festival with a strong musical presence. A powerful sound journey through contemporary lusophone music. The program brings together promising talents from Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola and Brazil and demonstrates the diversity and strength of the current musical landscape in the Lusophone world. An unmistakable, expressive voice and expansive music based on fado: this is &#x27;Fado Camões&#x27;, the album by Portuguese singer and composer LINA_. Fado Camões&#x27; is a unique composition based on the classic poetry of Portugal&#x27;s most famous historical poet, Luís Vaz de Camões. &quot;I became curious, I wanted to know more, beyond the &#x27;Lusíadas&#x27; or &#x27;Sonetos&#x27;&quot;, explains LINA_, &quot;and I discovered that his themes - change, childhood, love, heartbreak or the description of nature - fit into the context of fado and its metrics.&quot; The simple elegance of the recent past is still there, but now there is a new spaciality in which the voice stands out amidst the silence of guitar and violin. Certain musicians are the inspiration for an entire genre, such as Fela Kuti for Afrobeat or, somewhat less well known, Damily for Tsapiky. The style emerged in the 80s from East African influences and Malagasy traditions and can be heard on all kinds of occasions (funerals, elections, weddings, healing ceremonies...). Charged riffs on worn electric guitars and piercing vocals are played over driving drum beats; all at a tempo that thrusts itself irresistibly into the body. Damily has been touring the world as an ambassador for this music for almost forty years and is now coming to Moods for the first time with a new album. “Fihisa” (Bongo Joe) was recorded in the open air in 2023, with feet in the rain and microphones in the winds of Cyclone Freddy. It&#x27;s raw, it&#x27;s driving, it&#x27;s fantastic! For fans of raw, unpolished sounds, of the label Bongo Joe and jangling guitars à l&#x27;Etran de L&#x27;Aïr / Bombino.

Pianist and composer Floriano Inacio Jr. has &quot;Duas Moradas&quot; (two homes) - he moved from the global metropolis of São Paulo to Bülach. And so his fifth album, which tells the story of this journey, is called Duas Moradas. The songs were written all over the world and recorded in a studio in the Brazilian hinterland. Inacio Jr. was inspired by nature, his family and his musician and poet friends, whose memory resonates in every note. The album captivates with a variety of Brazilian rhythms, which are also strongly influenced by the aesthetics of jazz. With engaging melodies, contemporary harmonies and expressive improvisation, the work reveals Floriano&#x27;s passion for jazz, especially Brazilian jazz.

Moods Summer Special

Barbatuques scored a hit with Baianá in 2005, which later became the World Cup anthem in Brazil and led to countless remixes. However, to reduce the group from São Paulo to one track would not do them justice. With their mixture of body percussion, vocal music and influences from various Brazilian styles, funk, electronics and rap, Barbatuques have created their own unmistakable sound aesthetic and thus contributed significantly to the worldwide spread of body percussion. Their music has been used for various film, commercial and video game soundtracks and has led to performances in over 30 countries. 25 years after their formation, they return with a new stage show that includes new material as well as their older hits.

Blending notes of R&amp;B, Blues and rap with the waves of soul. The Bahian artist had a striking start to her career, featuring in the Latin Grammy nominated song “AmarElo” alongside Emicida and Pablo Vittar. Majur’s debut album “Ojunifé” (2021), documents her journey of self-discovery and features collaborations with Liniker and Luedji Luna, reinforcing the message of diversity and black affection. She made her international debut at the Roskilde Festival and has been featured in major Brazilian lineups such as Rock in Rio. With a powerful musical presence, Majur merges African, Indigenous, and modern influences, solidifying her place in the music scene.

Sélène Saint-Aimé String Trio

Sélène Saint-Aimé only appeared on the music scene a few years ago and has already developed a strong, independent voice. With a father from Martinique and a Franco-Ivorian mother, she describes herself as an “Afro-descendant”. Accordingly, her musical identity is clearly cosmopolitan, as she is influenced by both her roots and her travels. In this exclusive concert series, she will reinterpret songs from Louisiana, the Antilles and La Réunion and get to the bottom of her Creole identity. She will be accompanied by French violinist Thèo Ceccaldi, who has already won a Victoire du Jazz as “Revelation of the Year” and demonstrated his versatility with the French-Ethiopian project “Kutu”; and Guillaume Latil, one of the most sought-after jazz cellists. Born in 1981 as the daughter of a writer and a director in the Albanian capital Tirana, Elina Duni first appeared on stage at the age of just five. A lot has happened since her first musical steps on radio and television: today, Elina Duni is an ECM artist and, since 2017, a laureate of the Swiss Music Prize. In this ZKB Jazz Prize Special, the oud virtuoso Rabih Abou-Khalil meets the Elina Duni Trio with Marc Méan and Matthieu Michel. A unique constellation that will probably bring some golden moments. Last year, Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa&#x27;s greatest bands, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its story begins in the heart of Dakar&#x27;s medina in Senegal in the late 1960s and stretches around the world and into the 21st century. The group of singers and musicians from all over the continent play a mixture of Afro and Latin American styles, international pop and traditional griot music. After last year&#x27;s sold-out concert, the band returns to Moods this August. Before and after the concert, DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim will be spinning some tunes.

What luck: Mrs. Schmidhauser buys a guitar but doesn&#x27;t find enough time to practice. So she gives the instrument to her boys. Beat and Jürg don&#x27;t waste much time and start rocking. Some time later Beat, meanwhile matured to Schmidi, plays his first gig at the age of 14. Today, about 1500 concerts and 46 years later, Schmidi delights us for the last time live on stage, because – and to our regret – &quot;it&#x27;s enough of a good thing.&quot; From now on, he wants to devote himself to things that have came up short in all these years. Alina has already been selected for SRF 3 Best Talent, has been nominated for the most important Swiss music award (Swiss Music Awards) and won the Swiss Live Talent Award with her last album (Chasing Traces). At this concert Alina Amuri will present her next studio album Back To You. It is the most personal record so far and tells about her journey back to her birthplace Kinshasa, back to her family roots.

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Yoni Mayraz, who grew up in Tel Aviv and lives in London, has made a name for himself in the British new jazz scene since 2020 with a few singles and the EP «Rough Cuts». On his debut album «Dybbuk Tse!» he combines jazz with elements of 90s New York hip-hop, old-school breakbeats and Middle Eastern music. In Jewish folklore, the «Dybbuk» in the title is the spirit of someone dead in sin who drives into a living body. «Dybbuk Tse!» is the command to the spirit to leave the afflicted body. In this sense, the debut album can be read as the exorcism of evil spirits.

Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.
