Balkan Moods is a group of five renowned soloists from Bulgaria centred around the kaval player Theodosii Spassov. The instrumentalist and composer is known for his virtuoso and innovative playing on the traditional kaval flute - one of the oldest instruments in Europe - and for his ability to combine different genres. The love of cross-genre music has also brought this quintet together: Their repertoire is made up of works by contemporary composers from Bulgaria and Serbia, combining traditional Balkan music, classical music and jazz.

The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. With the Lea Gasser 5tet, the young accordionist brings her own wonderfully enchanting musical language to the stage. Embedded in the sound of her quintet, the musician creates lyrical compositions that describe seemingly inconspicuous everyday moments and fuse jazz with classical and folk music elements.

Bass clarinettist Chloé Marsigny draws inspiration for her deeply jazzy compositions from the universe and the laws of physics and astrophysics. Maud Paquis Quintet

Maud Paquis is a French-Swiss author, composer, pianist and singer. In the language of Molière, she tells mysterious stories about the call of seagulls, a witch hunt, Greek myths and the creation of the universe - sometimes poppy, sometimes inspired by swing or bossa nova, but always original.

The Swiss-Cuban pianist Leandro Irarragorri interweaves influences from his compositions with influences from US-American and Cuban music radiations. The result is a groovy sound between Latin and jazz that makes you dance, to dance, sing and feel along.

Polarbaeren are four young musicians who set out to shatter the conventions of what new jazz should and shouldn&#x27;t do. Whirling, abrupt, straightforward, with powerful beats and insane creativity, the band captivates their listeners and wraps them up in a snowstorm of sounds.

Konkolo Orchestra

The Konkolo Orchestra is a Zurich-based band centred around multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Alexis Malefakis. Their debut single «Blue G» (2022) was already a hit, now the album «Future Pasts» (2024) follows, a collection of funky to jazzy Afrobeat and highlife songs. An exuberant atmosphere and dancing mood are guaranteed when the Konkolo Orchestra performs in front of the audience with its light-hearted lyrics, cheerful melodies and a powerful brass section. This concert is free of charge, but admission is only guaranteed with a valid reservation.

The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

A double premiere! Irina Ungureanu and Anna Trauffer will be on stage together for the first time. And: Irina Ungureanu will also perform her own songs in Swiss German for the first time. But Romanian folk songs from her childhood will also find a place in the programme. The two musicians will accompany each other with a multi-instrumental setup ranging from violin and zither to piano and various objects. Sometimes very calm and unagitated, sometimes so moving that it&#x27;s hard not to dance along or howl with emotion. FRAME.OUT is a musical storytelling about personal boundaries and social conventions. Victoria Mozalevskaya invites the audience on a journey that explores the facets of life. Together with singer Song Yi Jeon, whose voice captivates the audience, and the energetic, innovative sound of the duo Lada Obradovic and David Tixier, the quartet delves deep into its musical world – into complex grooves and experimental sound formation in the context of contemporary jazz. It is an exploration of the individual stories that make the four musicians who they are and how they reflect the world through their music.

Back in 2009, their fresh rock/post-rock electronic sound, described as euphoric, holistic, spacey, and raucous quickly catapulted the Jordanian-Palestinian band from Amman to massive success; an artistic journey that saw them become one of the leading socially and politically outspoken bands reviving the Arab independent music scene. El Morabba3 broke cultural barriers and appealed to a generation of hunger-stricken fans living in an unstable and restless region, as they craved a new sound; one that expressed the thoughts, concerns, and anger of the people towards the realities they are living today. Today, Muhammad Abdulla and Basel Naouri live in Berlin, they have restructured the band and take El Morabba3&#x27;s earlier aesthetic evolution into a new direction. Departing from the raw post-rock energy of the first album and the polished instrumental/electronic fervor of the second, the artists have taken a deep dive into experimentation with electronic tunes and storytelling.

Yumi Ito, a Swiss singer with Polish-Japanese roots, moves effortlessly between genres and her roles as singer, pianist, composer and improviser. She has performed twice with the ZJO, and Ed Partyka is very much looking forward to arranging some of Yumi&#x27;s brand new compositions. The audience can expect an evening of unusual sounds, refreshing and inspiring moments – and surprises: As Yumi Ito&#x27;s music is conceived and composed for smaller ensembles, Ed Partyka&#x27;s big band arrangements open up new worlds of sound.

From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. The long-standing and very fruitful partnership between Thomas Gansch and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will continue this year. In addition to repertoire from the past, there will also be new arrangements written by Ed Partyka especially for this concert, presenting Thomas Gansch as a composer and multi-instrumental soloist, but also as an amiable &#x27;enfant terrible&#x27;. One thing is certain: the wonderful musicians of the ZJO will provide some musical surprises. It is also certain that the band and the audience will experience an unforgettable evening.

Born in 1981 as the daughter of a writer and a director in the Albanian capital Tirana, Elina Duni first appeared on stage at the age of just five. A lot has happened since her first musical steps on radio and television: today, Elina Duni is an ECM artist and, since 2017, a laureate of the Swiss Music Prize. Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie is the brother of the big band musician Byron Bowie and the co-founder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe himself founded the punk-funk-jazz group Defunkt in 1978. The band released several genre-bending albums in the 1980s, and their music has been called one of the most adventurous sounds of the last quarter of the 20th century. Over the past 20 years, Joe Bowie has also worked to adapt this music for big band. One of the arrangers Joe has worked with since 2011 is Ed Partyka. The ZJO is looking forward to an energetic evening of danceable hits from the long history of Defunkt.

Last year, Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa&#x27;s greatest bands, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its story begins in the heart of Dakar&#x27;s medina in Senegal in the late 1960s and stretches around the world and into the 21st century. The group of singers and musicians from all over the continent play a mixture of Afro and Latin American styles, international pop and traditional griot music. After last year&#x27;s sold-out concert, the band returns to Moods this August. Before and after the concert, DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim will be spinning some tunes.

Today, about 1500 concerts and 46 years later, Schmidi delights us for the last time live on stage, because – and to our regret – &quot;it&#x27;s enough of a good thing.&quot; From now on, he wants to devote himself to things that have came up short in all these years. Yarima Blanco Y Son Latino

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Pancho Amat, international master of the tres cubanos, describes Blanco&#x27;s talent as exceptional. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

From her hometown of London, singer Summer Pearl is currently taking the music world by storm. Her sound of jazz, soul, hip-hop and dub, is reminiscent of the one of the great Erykah Badu, both powerful and touching at the same time. Summer Pearl herself describes it as &quot;a meditation on my past and a reflection of our present. It is both a personal and political message exploring black and female liberation and love gained and love lost.&quot;

Yoni Mayraz

Yoni Mayraz, who grew up in Tel Aviv and lives in London, has made a name for himself in the British new jazz scene since 2020 with a few singles and the EP «Rough Cuts». On his debut album «Dybbuk Tse!» he combines jazz with elements of 90s New York hip-hop, old-school breakbeats and Middle Eastern music. In Jewish folklore, the «Dybbuk» in the title is the spirit of someone dead in sin who drives into a living body. «Dybbuk Tse!» is the command to the spirit to leave the afflicted body. In this sense, the debut album can be read as the exorcism of evil spirits.
