At the end of the year, the Zurich Jazz Orchestra presents the Grammy-nominated Blue Note artist Melissa Aldana - one of the most innovative and independent jazz musicians on the international scene. Born in Santiago de Chile, the saxophonist comes from a family of musicians: her father and grandfather were both saxophonists. She began playing the saxophone at the age of six under her father&#x27;s guidance. Initially influenced by Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley on the alto saxophone, she switched to the tenor saxophone after hearing Sonny Rollins. As a teenager, she played in jazz clubs in Santiago and was invited by pianist Danilo Pérez to perform at the Panama Jazz Festival in 2005. She later moved to the USA to study at Berklee College of Music. She released her debut album &quot;Free Fall“ in 2010. At the age of just 24, she was the first instrumentalist and first South American musician to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. The Washington Post praised her as representing a new sense of possibility and a new direction in jazz. Her album Visions (2019) earned her a Grammy nomination in the Best Improvised Jazz Solo category. Nate Chinen (NPR Music) called it one of the best jazz albums of the year and praised Aldana&#x27;s ability to combine technical brilliance with a rich emotional palette. The concert program she is presenting with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra at Moods was written entirely by her. One part was arranged by Jim McNeely for the HR Big Band, the other by Ed Partyka especially for the ZJO and its soloists.

&quot;Sticky Fingers&quot; is widely regarded as one of the Rolling Stones&#x27; finest albums. According to Rolling Stone magazine, it ranks 64th among the 500 greatest albums. However, that doesn&#x27;t mean it can&#x27;t be improved upon. Certainly differently, though. That brings us to our point: if you slip slightly on the keyboard, &quot;Sticky&quot; becomes &quot;Stucky.&quot; Erika Stucky dares to try this in her new program. Stucky is known for her cover versions. She delves into the essence of a song, tinkering not only with its structure but also its soul. With her unmistakable voice, humor, and poetic subversion, Stucky sheds new light on the legendary album. She weaves jazz interludes, cabaret charm, and a hint of rock aesthetics into a kaleidoscopic, cinematic stage production. In this project, Stucky is joined by two renowned English musicians: Terry Edwards and Paul Cuddeford. Edwards plays the saxophone, trumpet, bass, and melodica and gained musical experience with Madness, Tindersticks, and Nick Cave, to name a few. Guitarist Paul Cuddeford&#x27;s musical résumé is equally impressive. He has played with the crème de la crème of the British music scene, including Bob Geldof and Sir Tom Jones. Together, they will breathe new life into hits such as &quot;Brown Sugar&quot; and bring &quot;Stucky Fingers&quot; to life.

Andrea Kirchhofer

Singing violinist Andrea Kirchhofer and violin-playing singer Irina Ungureanu celebrate the premiere of their musical adventure as a duo. Keen to explore new territory and experiment with language, they create a new soundscape with two violins and two voices, Swiss German and English lyrics, and the occasional interjection of electric guitar. With a minimalist setup, the two musicians lead us into a colourful and melancholic sonic universe full of shrill miniatures, pictorial and slightly bizarre lyrics, fragments of text and an untamed variety of violin sounds. The limited range of the violins and voices calls for unusual arrangements, opening doors to rare sound worlds in the process. Irina Ungureanu, who has a background in contemporary and Romanian folk music, has recently started writing her own Swiss German songs for the duo with Anna Trauffer, &quot;Pelz&quot;, and for &quot;Bondar&quot;. Andrea Kirchhofer&#x27;s combination of voice and violin continues a path she explored until 2018 with her quartet/trio Atrium. The two musicians come together through their play with language and their experiences with musical theatre and new folk music. Since 2024, they have been performing together on stage with the Romansh and Romanian songs of the quintet SORAS.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

The Swiss-Cuban pianist Leandro Irarragorri interweaves influences from his compositions with influences from US-American and Cuban music radiations. The result is a groovy sound between Latin and jazz that makes you dance, to dance, sing and feel along. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

Hip Hop Zoo & Moods present

These two US artists are something of a beacon in the hip-hop world. Their influence is felt far and wide, and they are hugely influential in the genre. Let&#x27;s start with Riggins, who also has an impressive career in jazz. For example, the drummer produced the rapper Common back in the &#x27;90s and has worked with renowned artists such as Erykah Badu, The Roots, J, Dilla,, Talib Kweli, Kaytranada and Madlib. He is also part of the Emmy Award-winning supergroup August Greene, alongside Common and Robert Glasper. J. Rocc is a turntable legend, one of the first DJs to play hip-hop in Southern California and the founder of the Beat Junkies. He also DJs for Madlib and was a member of Jaylib. The collaborative music of Karriem Riggins and J. Rocc sounds a bit like a classic beat tape, but is so much more. They span narratives across tracks and entire albums, giving the whole thing the character of a suite. Together, these two luminaries will guide the Moods ship safely through a stormy evening, navigating surging drum rolls, breaking beats and lightning-fast cuts. This concert will be standing.

Mira Lu Kovacs is the voice of the avant-garde supergroup 5K HD, band leader, grunge-pop guitarist for My Ugly Clementine, sound corporate designer for Vienna&#x27;s Belvedere Museum and theatre musician. Amidst this exciting diversity, Mira Lu Kovacs&#x27; solo project on her latest album &quot;Please, Save Yourself&quot; (2024) surprises with an extraordinary calmness. Her voice, introspective lyrics and guitar unfold into sophisticated compositions that become music for daydreaming and maybe even shedding some tears.

Mark Lettieri

Mark Lettieri is both an extremely versatile guitarist and a very busy man. At home in virtually every genre, he is currently one of the most sought-after studio musicians and has toured with a number of major artists. In 2008, Lettieri became an integral part of the jazz/world group Snarky Puppy, where he contributes as guitarist, arranger and composer. Outside of Snarky Puppy, Lettieri has released five albums as a leader, and in 2018 Lettieri joined forces with Vulfpeck offshoot The Fearless Flyers, which includes Vulfpeck&#x27;s Cory Wong and Joe Dart on guitar and bass, respectively, and drummer Nate Smith (Chris Potter, Pat Metheny). His most recent recordings include David Crosby, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Adam Levine, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Tori Kelly, Ledisi, Tamela Mann, Eric Roberson, Lecrae, Lupe Fiasco, Keyshia Cole, Xzibit and numerous radio and TV jingles.

Nicole Johänntgen&#x27;s Labyrinth is groovy, experimental, sometimes melancholic and here and there you can hear the flair of the Motown era of the 70s. After the successful and energetic evening in spring 2024, Johänntgen, Hansen and Stauffacher return to Moods - this time with the sequel - Labyrinth II. When the saxophonist creates music, she likes to look deep, reflect and feel life. While the unconventional line-up of saxophone, tuba (Jon Hansen) and percussion (David Stauffacher) offers unexpected new possibilities, Nicole Johänntgen remains true to her soulful, expressive and virtuoso playing, in which saxophone and vocals alternate in unexpected, artistic ways. From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. If little more than a year passes before the ZJO invites a guest for a second time, the premiere must have been a complete success: In November 2022, British-Nigerian vocalist and songwriter Ola Onabulé performed with the ZJO for the first time. He is a virtuoso, self-effacing singer and a lyricist with today&#x27;s world in mind and history in the back of his mind. The topics of his songs hardly leave anything out, from basic human love of life to political content. In doing so, he refrains from stereotyping, which makes his work more elaborate, but his songs all the more authentic.

Last year, Orchestra Baobab, one of Africa&#x27;s greatest bands, celebrated its 50th anniversary. Its story begins in the heart of Dakar&#x27;s medina in Senegal in the late 1960s and stretches around the world and into the 21st century. The group of singers and musicians from all over the continent play a mixture of Afro and Latin American styles, international pop and traditional griot music. After last year&#x27;s sold-out concert, the band returns to Moods this August. Before and after the concert, DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim will be spinning some tunes.

He is an icon of Neo-Soul: the American singer Bilal. The texts are political and socially critical, the sound moves somewhere between Soul, Hip-Hop, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. His voice winds sinuously through all the octaves in order to come over sometimes softly, at other times powerful. Over the years Bilal has worked with the greats such as Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper and Kendrick Lamar and in the process he has developed into one of the most renowned exponents of this genre.

«Mister Funk» returns to Moods! The lively trombonist that wrote musical history with the bands of James Brown and George Clinton and is recognised as one of the most important figures in Funk is not at all thinking about retirement. When it’s all about tackling the essence of Funk, no-one does it as well as the power-trombonist. With his New J.B.&#x27;s, Wesley proves that he is in a class of his own when it comes to putting together a sparkling Funk unit comprising brilliant musicians.

Yarima Blanco Y Son Latino

Yarima Blanco is an outstanding Tres Cubano player and one of the few outside of Cuba to master this unique three-stringed instrument. With her own septet, Son Latino, she combines various Cuban styles with Latin American influences. Her electrifying performances showcase not only her impressive technique on the tres, but also her powerful voice and charisma. Blanco perfected her skills during several years of study in Cuba and quickly became a sought-after artist, also making waves on the international jazz scene with the orchestra ANACAONA. Pancho Amat, international master of the tres cubanos, describes Blanco&#x27;s talent as exceptional. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Don Byron & Aruan Ortiz Duo

Wonderful dialogues between two outstanding instrumentalists and improvisers: in the Downtown New York scene, the world-known clarinetist Don Byron constantly tried out new mix ratios between Jazz-Tradition, Classical and Klezmer. Together with the Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz, whose solo album «Cub(an)isme» received a rare five-star review from the American Jazz magazine «Downbeat», they form a top-class duo. The program features own compositions and standards, Afro-Cuban Swing, Modern Jazz and awareness of tradition. La Sonora Mazurén

La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. A must for lovers of bands like the Meridian Brothers and for anyone curious to discover the new Tropsychedelica sound of Colombia. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

All four musicians use electronic effects to create a fragile yet powerful soundscape in which composition and improvisation are balanced. At the same time, the music leaves plenty of room to breathe and creates impressive sonic contrasts. Julie Campiche&#x27;s musical language is shaped by the big questions of her generation: the vast amounts of radioactive waste, multimedia sensory overload and the search for identity in the digital age.The musical language of experimental jazz harpist, singer, composer, producer and bandleader Julie Campiche is the result of constant curiosity and innovation in music and her great interest in the state of the world. Jazz, classical, electronic music and last but not least avant-garde traits permeate her music - exposing an immediate fragility that sometimes delicately, sometimes powerfully scratches the limit without ever exceeding it. In this way Campiche, who must be called a pioneer of harp jazz, has created her very own music that is unparalleled.

Leenalchi shows us how experimental and avant-garde the K-pop scene can be. The band from Seoul has dedicated itself to reinterpreting the Korean storytelling genre Pansori, which is characterized by a special performance style with vocals and percussion. The band sings verses of traditional Korean fairy tales and draws musical inspiration from alt-rock and eighties new wave. By dissecting and rearranging traditional elements, the result is music that is forward-looking, but at the same time strongly rooted in tradition. In Korea itself, the band has long been established, filling concert halls, winning various Korean Music Awards, and appearing in a Netflix production. Leenalchi gained international attention in 2020 with their song Tiger Is Coming and subsequently thrilled audiences at renowned festivals including Roskilde, Pohoda, Womad, Fusion and the FMM Festival.

The African Queen of Bass – that’s Manou Gallo. The exceptional bassist from the Ivory Coast was discovered by Funk pioneer and bassist Bootsy Collins, with whom she produced the album “Afro Groove Queen” (2018). Constantly anchored by her African roots, Manou Gallo blends her sound with Funk, Jazz, Soul and Blues into a multi-layered sound collage. Live on stage, her groovy slap-bass solos ensure an unforgettable concert experience.

In the best klezmer tradition, Cheibe Balagan draws on various musical influences - from Eastern Europe to Switzerland to Japan - and fuses them into rousing, danceable pieces. The Zurich septet gained national fame through the soundtrack of the hit movie «Wolkenbruch» and since then has been creating an exuberant atmosphere, whether at the Montreux Jazz Festival, street festivals or in dimly lit bars. At Moods, Cheibe Balagan will release their third Album answering the essential questions of life such as: What do unicorn hunters have in common with in-laws? How do you greet the mice in the kitchen? And how many onions belong in a pot of «gefilte fish»?

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Elina Duni Trio feat. Rabih Abou-Khalil

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird. Das Konzert fand im Rahmen des ZKB Jazzpreis statt.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Mit unterschiedlichen kulturellen Einflüssen sowie einer lebendigen und mutigen Botschaft gelingt es Alina Amuri, magische musikalische Momente zu kreieren. Die in der DR Kongo Kinshasa geborene und in der Schweiz aufgewachsene Sängerin und Multi-Instrumentalistin hat in den letzten zehn Jahren ihren eigenen, hausgemachten Stil zwischen Afro, Neo Soul und Trip Hop entwickelt. Eine unvergessliche Stimme trifft auf kongolesische Perkussionsfreude und überraschende Flöteneinlagen und setzt Kräfte frei, bei denen der Optimismus zurückkehrt und das Tanzen unausweichlich wird. Ein Sound, der ein neues Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit schafft und das Versprechen, dass alles gut werden wird. Alina Amuri verbindet in ihrer Musik Einflüsse aus Lauryn Hill, Nina Simone und Alicia Keys mit einem frischen, lebendigen Twist. Alina wurde schon für SRF 3 Best Talent ausgewählt, war schon für den wichtigsten Schweizer Musikpreis nominiert (Swiss Music Awards) und gewann mit ihrem letzten Album (Chasing Traces) den Swiss Live Talent Award. An diesem Konzert wird Alina Amuri ihr nächstes Studioalbum «Back To You» vorstellen. Es ist die bisher persönlichste Platte und erzählt von ihrer Reise zurück in ihre Geburtsstadt Kinshasa, zurück zu ihren familiären Wurzeln.

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. Sie ist sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine politische Botschaft, die sich mit der schwarzen und weiblichen Befreiung sowie mit gewonnener und verlorener Liebe beschäftigt.»

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. OORT CLOUD concentrates on the expansion of the classical guitar trio sound and discover new, unconventional ways of interaction, composition and improvisation. The instrumentation loses its typical role models through the experimentation with preparations, electronic effects, playing techniques, together with sophisticated concepts for composotion and improvisation. The concert took place as part of the ZKB Jazz Prize.

With A Shake Stew, Austria&#x27;s Jazz band of the hour, much is extraordinary. Starting with the line-up: two drummers, two bass players, two saxophones, a trumpet. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Music that reveals a hypnotic spell, one wants to soak up every note, to dance, to shake oneself and hope that it will never stop.

Muriel Grossmann is considered a master of spiritual jazz and has created impressive works with albums such as Devotion (Third Man Records, 2023) and The Light Of the Mind (RR Gems Records, 2024). The Ibiza-based multi-instrumentalist interweaves modal jazz in the tradition of John Coltrane with spiritual post-bop, free improvisation and sonic depth. Her compositions are tailor-made for her fellow musicians and impressively showcase their individual strengths. Grossmann creates a dense, meditative atmosphere on stage, as can be heard most recently on the live album MGQ live at King Georg, Cologne. At Moods, the quartet will present their latest album Breaktrough, which will be released at the end of September 2025 - and prove that they play even more vividly live than in the studio.

With Rhythm Creature, Patrick Sommer has created an ensemble that behaves like a pulsating organism. The band as a creature is only marginally tamed and indulges its instincts with relish. The musical ideas for this mostly originate from Patrick Sommer&#x27;s preoccupation with the Moroccan guembri, a lute-like, three-stringed instrument from the Western Sahara. The resulting creative output has also had a lasting influence on his approach to his other bass instruments, rhythms, and phrasing. The resulting pieces are characterised by interwoven rhythms, intense moods and captivating melodies. The band members are all groove specialists: Patrick has been working closely with guitarist Michael Bucher for countless years, and he has been playing in various formations with drummer Kaspar Rast, keyboardist Peter Wagner, saxophonist Dave Feusi and percussionist David Stauffacher for almost as long. Rhythm Creature now breathes life into these pieces and releases them into the wild.

The path of the energetic bassist, drummer and singer led from the small town of Divo on the Ivory Coast to the biggest stages in the world. None other than the bass legend Bootsy Collins paved the way for Manou Gallo to be named one of the “Top 10 World Best Bass Players”! Gallo is pure power on the bass, mixing jazz, funk, groove, and Afro beat. Once you’ve experienced her, you immediately recognize her uniqueness: In her hands, the bass sometimes becomes a percussion element, driving the groove to fascinating heights. It’s no wonder Bootsy Collins calls her the “African Queen of Bass”. Other giants like Manu Dibango, Mamady Keita, Wyclef Jean, Marcus Miller, and Lucas van Meerwijk have also taken notice of her and shared stages with her. Proud of her African roots, Gallo says she has the musical freedom to play anything. And it’s precisely this freedom that you’ll find on stage: an explosive mixture of funk, jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and confident Afro grooves. With her technique and her music, Manou Gallo impressively proves that she is one of the best bassists in the world.

How many stories can you fit into 25 years? In the case of Monobloco, the answer is: infinitely. For more than two decades, the band has been synonymous with excessive celebrations, intense encounters and passion. The anniversary is being celebrated under the motto Nossa História De Amor (Our Love Story). Monobloco has always been a great celebration of love: friendships formed during rehearsals, marriages made to the sound of the tambourine and children growing up to the rhythm of the batucada. Their current repertoire includes classics such as Taj Mahal, Fio Maravilha, Explode Coração as well as new hits from the pen of the famous Jorge Aragão (for example Vou Festejar, Identidade and Coisinha do Pai). Of course, the percussive essence that transcends rhythms and styles remains, delighting fans worldwide.

MKZ Big Band Summit

Big Band Summit 2025 Once again: “Three Bands — One Event!” Every three years, Moods hosts the spectacular summit meeting of three big bands. The matinee will open with the Big Band MKZ under the direction of Zurich saxophonist Christoph Irniger. Next up, the SJMUZ BigBand, led by trombonist Lukas Reinert, will take to the already fired-up stage. For the third set, the two bandleaders will join 14 fellow teachers from the Zurich Music School and Conservatory (MKZ) as performers in the teachers@mkz.big.band , under the direction of pianist Andreas Christoph Szalatnay. The three ensembles present a wide stylistic range of compositions and arrangements, captivating the audience with their shared passion for orchestral jazz.

When you think of storks, you quickly think of offspring and new beginnings. They also flutter into Moods with Zurich band Den Dala for a record launch when they present their new album ‘Say Hi to the Storks’. Den Dala remains true to their roots. In their songs, they blend jazz, indie and psychedelic rock into a groovy mixture that makes it nearly impossible to stand still. The band is not alone - Junes, Rye (Chestnut Bakery) and Tim Bond, who are also featured on the album, will also be taking part. Not only can you say hi to the storks, but also do something good for them with your ticket. You have the option of making a donation to the Swiss Stork Society with your purchase. And a real record launch always includes a bit of mischief. What do a razor, the guitarist and 200 sold tickets have in common? You&#x27;ll find out at the concert.

50 Jahre Thomas Gansch Anniversary Band

Thomas Gansch needs little introduction. The Austrian trumpeter, composer and mastermind behind Mnozil Brass has already graced Moods several times - and he loved it. So much so that he is playing one of his only four shows with Gansch &amp; Roses here for his 50th birthday - the only one outside Austria and at his own request. He gave himself a birthday present: a band that will make you go into raptures. Greats such as Randy Brecker, James Morrison, Peter Erskine and Wolfgang Puschnig pay their respects to Gansch and play together with Michael Hornek, Albert Wieder, Florian Trübsbach, Fabian Rucker, Robert Hedemann - and of course the birthday boy himself. This concert was made possible in cooperation with JAM MUSIC LAB University. Thomas Gansch is professor, Peter Erskine and Randy Brecker are guest artists at JAM University. The concert is sold out; there will be no box office sales.

Non-binary, music-crazy and at home in both Japanese and African-American culture. Tomoki Sanders is a free electron, eager to explore Great Black Music, urban music, electronic music and the avant-garde. Discovered at this year&#x27;s Winter JazzFest in New York, the 31-year-old talent is a promising artist for the future. Although Tomoki was born into music as the child of the legendary saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, they have made a name for themself. This is evident through their collaboration with the Kassa Overall supergroup over several years, as well as their joint performances with Moses Sumney, Ravi Coltrane and Maurice “Mobetta” Brown. Following these ventures, Tomoki Sanders produced the band&#x27;s debut album, set to be released on Impuls! in 2026. Building on the label&#x27;s rich history, it storms through the door reopened by Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings, showcasing all its fantastic personality.

Adalu, Moods and the Portuguese Consulate in Zurich present the “Lusosonic Festival” - an intimate festival with a strong musical presence. A powerful sound journey through contemporary lusophone music. The program brings together promising talents from Portugal, Cape Verde, Angola and Brazil and demonstrates the diversity and strength of the current musical landscape in the Lusophone world. An unmistakable, expressive voice and expansive music based on fado: this is &#x27;Fado Camões&#x27;, the album by Portuguese singer and composer LINA_. Fado Camões&#x27; is a unique composition based on the classic poetry of Portugal&#x27;s most famous historical poet, Luís Vaz de Camões. &quot;I became curious, I wanted to know more, beyond the &#x27;Lusíadas&#x27; or &#x27;Sonetos&#x27;&quot;, explains LINA_, &quot;and I discovered that his themes - change, childhood, love, heartbreak or the description of nature - fit into the context of fado and its metrics.&quot; The simple elegance of the recent past is still there, but now there is a new spaciality in which the voice stands out amidst the silence of guitar and violin. It&#x27;s about language, writing, poetry and the structure of Camões&#x27; poems, combined with the expression and &#x27;saudade&#x27; of fado.

Deeply influenced by Creole music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla&#x27;s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time.
