The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. A groovy homage to a rich cultural history! Before and after the concert, DJ Voilà Tim will play a selection of African grooves. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

Her euphoric and uplifting sound draws influences from Bonobo, Ólafur Arnalds and Kenny Wheeler, artists whose music shares an emotive quality that you can also hear in Myra’s own compositions.

Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. The versatility of singer Marianne Racine is hard to beat and her all-round musicality repeatedly leads to astonishing performances. Swing and solo flights of fancy are provided by a dream team of the younger generation: bassist Patrick Sommer &amp; drummer Andreas Wettstein with their famously - rapturously groovy interplay; Lucerne pianist Lukas Gernet with attentively sensitive sounds and singable melodies. In short: this quartet is bursting with joy of playing, humor and solid craftsmanship.

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. Piet Jan Blauw began his career as a visual artist, while also working as a percussionist. Early on he made objects and then began to build electronic instruments and art installations. Numerous installations and performances in Europe, the USA and Mexico followed. His performances are both auditory and visual experiences. Gabriel Schiltknecht is a percussionist with heart and soul. His musical career began with the formation SCHILDPATT. After training as a primary school teacher, he taught at the Swiss School in Accra/Ghana, played with important local musicians and acquired a wide-ranging knowledge of the drumming tradition.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.
Sensory stimuli: Most concerts are accompanied by moving lights and smoke.

Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. Maya Kamaty

With a blend of electronic elements, the typical island percussion and string instruments and the poetic Creole sound, Maya Kamaty effectively re-invents the music of La Réunion island. Yet, she never actually wanted to become a musician. It all began when she was studying in France and became homesick that she started writing songs, then mixed the French Chanson tradition with influences from La Réunion and subsequently began to introduce more electronics into her music. The result is a fascinating equilibrium between local and global, between acoustic and electronic, between the past and the future.

Shake Stew

With A Shake Stew, Austria&#x27;s Jazz band of the hour, much is extraordinary. Starting with the line-up: two drummers, two bass players, two saxophones, a trumpet. Quasi two trios plus one. Their comet-like ascendance is also without parallel: a sold-out debut album, a closely-watched collaboration with Shabaka Hutchings and performances at all the renowned Jazz festivals from Frankfurt to Montreal, from Istanbul to Mexico, speak for themselves. And then there&#x27;s that sound: driving rhythms, the horns sometimes blaring, sometimes virtuoso, sometimes melodious, borrowings from Afrobeats, Funk and Swing. Music that reveals a hypnotic spell, one wants to soak up every note, to dance, to shake oneself and hope that it will never stop.

He is an icon of Neo-Soul: the American singer Bilal. The texts are political and socially critical, the sound moves somewhere between Soul, Hip-Hop, Blues, Gospel and Jazz. His voice winds sinuously through all the octaves in order to come over sometimes softly, at other times powerful. Over the years Bilal has worked with the greats such as Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper and Kendrick Lamar and in the process he has developed into one of the most renowned exponents of this genre.

From the New York underground to the Moods stage: in 2012 The Lesson GK started a common weekly jam-session, which became the cornerstone of the New York underground Hip-Hop scene. The band comprises prominent New York background musicians, so they toured with Reggie Watts, SZA, Lupe Fiasco and Run DMC, to name but a few. They seamlessly blend elements of experimental Hip-Hop, Jazz, Funk and Soul into a groovy sound.

Those who like Afrobeats à la Fela Kuti should not miss this concert by the Antibalas Collective. Founded in Brooklyn twenty years ago, meanwhile the band has acquired an excellent reputation, not least due to its participation in the musical «FELA!». Those that have experienced the Antibalas Collective live also know why: here rhythmical horn passages are tightly woven with intoxicating percussion until an incomparable dense and groovy sound tapestry is created. Thus the band functions as a large rhythm machine, which captures the attention of every listener.

Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science

The starting point for the current project«Social Science» by Terri Lyne Carrington was the desire to comment on critical issues within today&#x27;s community. The drummer, producer and Grammy Award winner and her sextet reflect on themes such as social justice, racial equality and gender topics, in order to translate these views into music. The result is contemporary Jazz, enriched with Spoken Word and elements of R’n’B, Indie Rock and Classical music.

Jaimie Branch has already contributed to a broad palette of projects, not only in Jazz, but also in Punk, Noise, Indie-Rock and Hip-Hop. Rather less well known, yet equally enchanting, is her work as composer and producer. These can first be discovered on her debut album «Fly or Die»: a 35-minute ride through all sorts of musical genres that knows no boundaries - always held together by the spooky sounds that she extracts from her trumpet.

Don Byron & Aruan Ortiz Duo

Wonderful dialogues between two outstanding instrumentalists and improvisers: in the Downtown New York scene, the world-known clarinetist Don Byron constantly tried out new mix ratios between Jazz-Tradition, Classical and Klezmer. Together with the Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz, whose solo album «Cub(an)isme» received a rare five-star review from the American Jazz magazine «Downbeat», they form a top-class duo. The program features own compositions and standards, Afro-Cuban Swing, Modern Jazz and awareness of tradition. The Swiss jazz critic Peter Rüedi praises Christoph Grab&#x27;s ensemble REFLECTIONS as &quot;top-notch, both in the solo flights of all the participants and in the arranged passages&quot; – an ensemble whose interplay is now so harmonious that it has grown into a single organism. Hence the title of their latest album &quot;Oneness&quot; (2024 Lamento Rec), whose meaning also includes being one with the world, empathy and a model for constructive interaction with one another – all qualities that are particularly relevant in today&#x27;s world. As on the previous album &quot;Live at Haberhaus&quot; (Lamento Rec), the music on &quot;Oneness&quot; is based on compositions by Thelonious Monk, to which Christoph Grab adds his own twist through his arrangements. The result is a vibrant, inspired album that shows how iconic material from jazz history can be used to create something new and unheard of. As a special treat, the band has invited none other than Russian-American trumpeter Alex Sipiagin to join them at Moods. It promises to be a unique evening.

Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich.

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. Ihr Sound aus Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop und Dub, der an diejenigen der grossen Eryka Badu erinnert, ist mächtig und zugleich berührend. Summer Pearl beschreibt ihn als «eine Meditation über meine Vergangenheit und eine Reflexion über unsere Gegenwart. Sie ist sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine politische Botschaft, die sich mit der schwarzen und weiblichen Befreiung sowie mit gewonnener und verlorener Liebe beschäftigt.»

Yoni Mayraz

Yoni Mayraz, in Tel Aviv aufgewachsen, in London lebend, hat sich seit 2020 mit ein paar Singles und der EP «Rough Cuts» einen Namen in der britischen New-Jazz-Szene gemacht. Auf seinem Debütalbum «Dybbuk Tse!» verbindet er Jazz mit Elementen des New Yorker Hip-Hop der 90er Jahre, Old-School-Breakbeats und nahöstlicher Musik. Der «Dybbuk» im Titel ist im jüdischen Volksglauben der Geist eines in Sünde Verstorbenen, der in einen lebenden Köper fährt. «Dybbuk Tse!» ist der Befehl an den Geist, den befallenen Körper zu verlassen. In diesem Sinn kann das Debütalbum als der Exorzismus von bösen Geistern gelesen werden.

Balkan Moods is a group of five renowned soloists from Bulgaria centred around the kaval player Theodosii Spassov. The instrumentalist and composer is known for his virtuoso and innovative playing on the traditional kaval flute - one of the oldest instruments in Europe - and for his ability to combine different genres. The love of cross-genre music has also brought this quintet together: Their repertoire is made up of works by contemporary composers from Bulgaria and Serbia, combining traditional Balkan music, classical music and jazz.

Maud Paquis is a French-Swiss author, composer, pianist and singer. In the language of Molière, she tells mysterious stories about the call of seagulls, a witch hunt, Greek myths and the creation of the universe - sometimes poppy, sometimes inspired by swing or bossa nova, but always original.

The Swiss-Cuban pianist Leandro Irarragorri interweaves influences from his compositions with influences from US-American and Cuban music radiations. The result is a groovy sound between Latin and jazz that makes you dance, to dance, sing and feel along.

The Meraki Sextet creates unique soundscapes that range from melancholy to exuberant euphoria and are characterised by the unusual instrumentation without harmony. Martin Gilgen and Marius Hösli draw inspiration for their compositions from the harmonic sounds and metaphors of the universe, thereby exploring the boundaries of jazz.

5K HD is sort of a «Supergroup» of the young Vienna Jazz scene, comprising musicians from Kompost 3 and the songstress Mira Lu Kovacs.  The band became famous (and has received several international awards) for its computerless electronic sounds, which are all played on instruments, however infinitely alienated, distorted, sent through circuits, and loaded with effects. The quintet moves playfully through Jazz to Dubstep and Songwriter-stuff and on to Prog-Rock escalation; spectakularly precise and yet always sensual. With «Creation Eats Creator» 5K HD has released a purely acoustic album which takes the term «unplugged» to a totally new dimension. Etran de L'Aïr

Raw Desert-Blues from the Sahel: in their music, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr capture the pules of daily life at weddings, christenings, political events and open-air soirees. Though the use of three instead of two guitars the sound comes across more wired and more rampant as with other bands. They orient themselves more toward artistes such as Oumou Sangaré and Ali Farka Touré than the established Tuareg ensembles. The live-recorded album «No. 1» was voted by the New Yorker as Album of the Year in 2020.
