RUTHER LANA &amp; MISS C-LINE is a trio from Switzerland, formed by drummer Jonas Ruther with MISS C-LINE rap, vocals and FX, François Lana on synthesiser and sampler. With influences from modern rap and beat culture, combined with collective improvisation and complex psychedelic sound structures, the three strong personalities create a very intense musical experience on stage. For his Carte Blanche, Ruther invites the Senegalese rapper Gaston Bandimic, who raps in Wolof and ignites an impressive rhythmic fire live.

Nicole Johänntgen&#x27;s Labyrinth is groovy, experimental, sometimes melancholic and here and there you can hear the flair of the Motown era of the 70s. After the successful and energetic evening in spring 2024, Johänntgen, Hansen and Stauffacher return to Moods - this time with the sequel - Labyrinth II. When the saxophonist creates music, she likes to look deep, reflect and feel life. While the unconventional line-up of saxophone, tuba (Jon Hansen) and percussion (David Stauffacher) offers unexpected new possibilities, Nicole Johänntgen remains true to her soulful, expressive and virtuoso playing, in which saxophone and vocals alternate in unexpected, artistic ways.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

3MA: Ballaké Sissoko – Driss El Maloumi – Rajery

Three musicians from three cultures on three instrument: that is the trio 3MA. Ballaké Sissoko is a magician on the Kora and deeply rooted in the Malian Griot tradition. Driss El Maloumi from Marokko is considered a master of the Oud. And in Madagascar they call Rajery the «Prince of Valiha», the Madagscan national instrument. Together they weave a fine pulsating tapestry on over 50 strings. The tracks from their joint album «Anarouz» (2017) are rooted in different traditions yet are completely new. They contain their very own poetry and warmth, they are however precise, full of tempo and wonderfully ornate. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

In the early years of Mali&#x27;s independence, 20-year-old Boubacar Traoré picked up an electric guitar and shaped the sound of the young state. But with the military coup in 1968, his songs were banned from the radio and Traoré had to support his family as a farmer and small trader. In the late 1980s, however, his comeback was abruptly interrupted once again by the death of his wife. Traoré went to Paris and made a living as a construction worker. Finally, in 1990, he re-emerged as a musician and recorded six albums in short intervals. Very soon, Vincent Bucher&#x27;s harmonica became the sonic alter ego of Traoré&#x27;s voice and guitar playing. Since the turn of the millennium at the latest, he has been celebrated as one of the great fathers and ambassadors of modern Mandingo music, combining characteristic playing techniques and ideas from West Africa with the philosophy of the blues from the southern United States.

Sahra Halgan comes from Somaliland, an autonomous region in the north of Somalia, which for years has campaigned for recognition as an independent state. She is considered as a music icon in her country, which she had to leave in 1992 due to the civil unrest. Today she again lives in her homeland, engages herself politically and sings traditional songs of her ancestors with a contemporary instrumentation. Her wish is to globally support the Somaliland people in the Diaspora. With astonishing ease, her expressive voice conveys a life full of homesickness, memories, and grief in exile. Simultaneously she impresses us with her huge stage presence, energy and joie de vivre! In Mai 2021 Nicole Johänntgen will present her new album, «Henry III», with Lukas Wyss (trombone), Steven Glenn (sousaphone) and Clemens Kuratle (drums). It is funky and refreshing, simple and honestly played, it grooves and rumbles, inspired by New Orleans jazz. The saxophonist has recorded the new album «analog to tape» during a live concert in the Domicil Pforzheim. Just like the good old days. And that generates nostalgia. One notices the confidence and enthusiasm of the four musicians. Henry III contains more funk than the two earlier albums. With crisp melodies and some drum rolls, they are once again well underway.

During Elina Duni&#x27;s Moods Carte Blanche in February, visitors to Moods were able to get their first taste of her current cooperation with Rob Luft – the rising star of the booming London Jazz scene. Some intensive months later and the new album «Lost Ships» is in the starting blocks and will be released in November on ECM. Before the CD goes on sale, Elina Duni and Rob Luft – together with the drummer Fred Thomas – take the audience on a journey through the new songs. The ensemble plays a captivating blend of Funk, Blues, Rock, Soul and traditional Oriental music, which impresses every audience.

What a singer! With her powerful voice, the Brit Hannah Williams soon takes you under her spell. She became known to music fans around the world when the Hip-Hop superstar Jay-Z sampled her spectacular song «Late Nights &amp; Heartbreak» for his album in 2017. With her band The Affirmations, she now presents her new album «50 Foot Woman» (2019), on which she blends Soul from the 60’s with elements of Funk and Rock into a groovy whole. Those who like Beth Ditto or Aretha Franklin should certainly not miss this concert!

Sly &amp; Robbie, these are the Reggae legends from Jamaica: drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist and keyboarder Robert Shakespeare, both members of Black Uhuru. Together with the Scandinavians Nils Petter Molvær, Eivind Aarset and Vladislav Delay, they create a unique sonic world which ranges from the colourful, melancholic sounds of Norwegian jazz to the energy-loaded grooves of Jamaica. Their «Nordub» project garnered world-wide attention following a joint tour in 2015/2016, now the long-awaited album of the results of their musical collaooperation has been released.

In Morocco the songstress Oum has long captured the hearts of her people of her country and is revered like a diva. She blends Moroccan Gnawa rhythms with fine doses of Jazz sounds, Pop, R’n’B, Soul and Funk. A qualified architect, she brings the genre-mix into a balance, on which her expressive voice can unfold in a wonderful manner. Her journeys and encounters in recent years have provided the material for her new album «Daba», which translated means «now». This urgency in the title is echoed in the songs: on the search for a universal music, she reflects on the world’s disquiet, yet simultaneously inspires hope.

Jazz, classical, electronic music and last but not least avant-garde traits permeate her music - exposing an immediate fragility that sometimes delicately, sometimes powerfully scratches the limit without ever exceeding it. In this way Campiche, who must be called a pioneer of harp jazz, has created her very own music that is unparalleled.

The singer and guitarist Omara «Bombino» Moctar is a charismatic personality; as a member of a Tuareg tribe in the Central African Niger he fosters a deep awareness for the music of the Nomads. During the last ten years Bombino has developed into an internationally known and admired musician with a sizeable list of fans and musical collaborators. This includes Stevie Wonder, Keith Richards, Robert Plant, Dave Longstreth, Dan Auerbach and many more. He was last in Moods in 2016, now he returns with his sixth album «Deran» - which means something like «with best wishes». Recorded in Casablanca, it is to date Bombino&#x27;s most gripping and multi-faceted album with wishes for a world that is currently full of pain and chaos. Supported by SüdKulturFonds

Andrea Motis Quintet

Andrea Motis is only 23 years old, yet demonstrates an astonishing musical maturity: the Spanish singer and trumpeter likes to blow fresh wind into traditional jazz without being unfaithful to its roots. Following several projects with bassist and saxophonist Joan Chamorro, she released her first solo album «Emotional Dance» on Impulse! Records in 2017. On it, she sings in English, Catalan and Portugese – a touching warmth always accompanies both her singing and trumpet playing.

Adam Ben Ezra

Double-bass phenomenon, multi-instrumentalist and YouTube sensation – or, to give him another name: Adam Ben Ezra. Within the broad spectrum of instruments that he can play, in addition to the double-bass there is also the violin, guitar, piano, clarinet, oud, flute and cajon – he is indeed a multi-instrumentalist in the true sense of the word. On stage, Adam Ben Ezra builds his songs slowly; groovy basslines are supplemented by stepped rhythms – yes, he can also do stepdance – followed one after the other by bowed melodies, percussive elements drummed on the bass, sometimes joined by singing and electronic effects. From the very first note Ezra&#x27;s captivating performance puts a spell on the audience and in the process pushes the double-bass deservedly into the spotlight.

Die langjährige und sehr fruchtbare Partnerschaft zwischen Thomas Gansch und dem Zurich Jazz Orchestra wird auch dieses Jahr fortgesetzt. Neben Repertoire aus der Vergangenheit wird es auch neue Arrangements geben, die von Ed Partyka speziell für dieses Konzert geschrieben wurden und die Thomas Gansch als Komponisten und Multi-Instrumental-Solisten, aber auch als liebenswürdiges ‹Enfant terrible› präsentieren. Sicher ist, dass die wunderbaren Musiker*innen des ZJO für einige musikalische Überraschungen sorgen werden. Sicher ist auch: Band und Publikum werden einen unvergesslichen Abend erleben.

Die 1981 als Tochter einer Schriftstellerin und eines Regisseurs in der albanischen Hauptstadt Tirana geborene Elina Duni stand im Alter von nur funf Jahren erstmals auf einer Bühne. Seit ihren ersten musikalischen Schritten in Radio und Fernsehen hat sich viel getan: Heute ist Elina Duni ECM-Künstlerin und seit 2017 Preisträgerin des Schweizer Musikpreises. In diesem ZKB Jazzpreis Special trifft der Oud-Virtuose Rabih Abou-Khalil auf das Elina Duni Trio mit Marc Méan und Matthieu Michel. Eine einmalige Konstellation, die wohl so einige goldene Momente mit sich bringen wird.

Joseph Bowie’s Big Band Funk - The Legendary Music of Defunkt

Joseph Bowie ist der Bruder des Big-Band-Musikers Byron Bowie und des Mitbegründers des Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lester Bowie. Joe selbst gründete 1978 die Punk-Funk-Jazz-Gruppe «Defunkt». Die Band veröffentlichte in den 1980er Jahren mehrere genreübergreifende Alben, und ihre Musik wurde als «einer der abenteuerlichsten Sounds des letzten Viertels des 20 Jahrhunderts» bezeichnet. In den letzten 20 Jahren hat Joe Bowie auch daran gearbeitet, diese Musik für Big Band zu adaptieren. Einer der Arrangeure, mit denen Joe seit 2011 zusammenarbeitet, ist Ed Partyka. Das ZJO freut sich auf einen energiegeladenen Abend mit tanzbaren Hits aus der langen Geschichte von «Defunkt».

Letztes Jahr feierte das Orchestra Baobab, eine der grössten Bands Afrikas, ihr 50-jähriges Bestehen. Ihre Geschichte beginnt im Herzen der Medina von Dakar im Senegal der späten 1960er Jahren und erstreckt sich über die ganze Welt und bis ins 21. Jahrhundert. Die Gruppe aus Sängern und Musikern vom ganzen Kontinent spielen eine Mischung aus afro-und lateinamerikanischen Stilen, internationalem Pop und traditioneller Griot-Musik. Nach dem ausverkauften Konzert vom letzten Jahr kehrt die Band diesen August zurück ins Moods. Vor und nach dem Konzert werden die beiden DJs Afreekaya &amp; Voilà Tim auflegen.

Welch ein Glück: Frau Schmidhauser ersteht eine Gitarre, findet jedoch nicht genug Zeit, um zu üben. Also übereignet sie das Instrument ihren Buben. Beat und Jürg machen nicht lange Federlesens und rocken los. Einige Zeit danach spielt Beat, inzwischen zum Schmidi gereift, mit 14 Jahren seinen ersten Gig. Heute, rund 1500 Konzerte und 46 Jährchen später, beglückt uns Schmidi zum letzten Mal live, denn – und zu unserem Bedauern – «es ist genug des Guten.» Er will sich fortan Dingen widmen, die in all den Jahren zu kurz gekommen sind und somit zwar nicht kürzertreten, aber breiter wirken. Unbeschreibliches hat Schmidi auf tausendundeiner Bühne erlebt, unterwegs mit «Stop the Shoppers», «HOT DC», «Los Hobos», «Chica Torpedo», «Traktorkestar», «Oso loco», mit Polo, Kuno, Endo, Büne, Sina, Lo &amp; Leduc – und immer wieder mit Jürg/Jiri, dem geliebten Brüetsch. Also dann: Bühne frei! Vor unseren Augen und Ohren schaltet Schmidi seinen Modus um: vom Künstlerleben zum Lebenskünstler.

Ein Jahr nachdem ihr fünftes Studioalbum Album «Longing Fever» den ‹Indie Suisse Album Of The Year Award› abgeräumt hat, ist Evelinn Trouble mit ihrer Band wieder auf Tour. Evelinn Trouble, bekannt für ihre kreative Rastlosigkeit, ihre virtuose Stimme und ihr eigenwilliges Songwriting hat ihrer Diskografie mit «Longing Fever» ein aufregendes Pop-Werk hinzugefügt – ein Bruch mit ihrer Psychedelic-Ära und trotzdem unverkennbar Trouble. Ein spannendes Album, das Höhen und Tiefen mit Inbrunst durchläuft und von beatlesken Liebesliedern zu euphorischen Melodien reicht, die von verzerrtem Hip-Hop getragen werden. Unerwartet gesellen sich neu Klänge von Streichinstrumenten zum sonst dunklen Klanguniversum der Zürcher Sängerin: Ein Streichtrio erweitert die Band zum «Evelinn Trouble Orchestra». Diese Konzertaufnahme entstand mit Unterstützung des Migros-Kulturprozent.

Yarima Blanco ist eine herausragende Tres-Cubano-Spielerin und eine der wenigen ausserhalb Kubas, die dieses einzigartige dreisaitige Instrument beherrschen. Mit ihrem eigenen Septett Son Latino verbindet sie verschiedene kubanische Stile mit lateinamerikanischen Einflüssen. Ihre mitreissenden Auftritte zeigen nicht nur ihre beeindruckende Technik auf der Tres, sondern auch ihre starke Stimme und ihr Charisma. Blanco perfektionierte ihr Können während eines mehrjährigen Studiums in Kuba und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Künstlerin, die auch mit dem Orchester ANACAONA in der internationalen Jazzszene für Aufsehen sorgte. Pancho Amat, internationaler Meister des Tres Cubanos, beschreibt Blancos Talent als aussergewöhnlich.

Aus ihrer Heimatstadt London heraus erobert die Sängerin Summer Pearl zur Zeit die Musikwelt im Sturm. Ihr Sound aus Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop und Dub, der an diejenigen der grossen Eryka Badu erinnert, ist mächtig und zugleich berührend. Summer Pearl beschreibt ihn als «eine Meditation über meine Vergangenheit und eine Reflexion über unsere Gegenwart. Sie ist sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine politische Botschaft, die sich mit der schwarzen und weiblichen Befreiung sowie mit gewonnener und verlorener Liebe beschäftigt.»

Die in der DR Kongo Kinshasa geborene und in der Schweiz aufgewachsene Sängerin und Multi-Instrumentalistin hat in den letzten zehn Jahren ihren eigenen, hausgemachten Stil zwischen Afro, Neo Soul und Trip Hop entwickelt. Eine unvergessliche Stimme trifft auf kongolesische Perkussionsfreude und überraschende Flöteneinlagen und setzt Kräfte frei, bei denen der Optimismus zurückkehrt und das Tanzen unausweichlich wird. Ein Sound, der ein neues Gefühl der Zusammengehörigkeit schafft und das Versprechen, dass alles gut werden wird. Her strong cultural roots and love of fusing African and Western Music has informed her own unique style, a key reason why she is a firm fixture on the new London Jazz scene, alongside peers such as Nubya Garcia and Shabaka Hutchings. Her music is a hypnotising blend of Afrofuturism, hip hop and jazz, with a politically minded subtext that has a powerful connection to her Nigerian identity, lineage and heritage, reflecting African history, culture and slavery. Her most recent album, ‘Ibio Ibio’, is a tribute to her tribe the Ibibio people of South Eastern Coastal Nigeria. The album features an incredible lineup, including Daniel Casimir, Sarah Tandy, Winton Clifford, Renato Paris, Sheila Maurice-Grey, Rosie Turton, Shirley Tetteh, hip hop drummer, Daru Jones, Birmingham based rapper, Lady Sanity and Sam Jones. Recent notable performances include North Sea Jazz Festival, where Camilla performed with both her own group and as a featured artist in the ‘Diaspora Suite’ performance; Jazz a Vienne, where Camilla also sat in for a guest spot with Marcus Miller; EFG London Jazz Festival, Jazz In The Park Romania, Brosella and Jazz Onze Lausanne. Dave Taylor has been the world&#x27;s most influential bass trombonist since he emerged on the New York music scene in the late 1960s. His unmistakable bass trombone sound can be heard on hundreds of albums, including recordings by Duke Ellington, The Rolling Stones, Barbara Streisand, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Wynton Marsalis, Blood Sweat &amp; Tears, Tina Turner, Gil Evans, Bob Mintzer Big Band and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Dave has also performed worldwide as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and encourages composers to write new and challenging music for the bass trombone. One musician who has a long and close artistic partnership with Dave is the Swiss composer and saxophonist Daniel Schynder, who will contribute a set for this concert and also perform as a soloist. For the conductor of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Ed Partyka, this project fulfills a long-cherished wish: Dave Taylor has been an idol of mine since I met him in the 1980s when he played with the George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band (still one of the most impressive live concerts I&#x27;ve ever heard!). I&#x27;m thrilled that we can finally realize this dream with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. The second set will be newly composed by Ed Partyka and arranged for Dave Taylor and the Zurich Jazz Orchestra.

Tromboranga play and arrange their music in this tradition, setting new accents and inviting you to dance. After more than 10 studio albums, they have become one of the most important ambassadors of this genre, also in the Big Apple and Cali, the capital of salsa.

BALTHVS is one of the positive results of the pandemic! The three musicians used the time of standstill to form a band in 2020. Since then, the psychedelic funk trio from Bogotá has already released over 30 singles and three albums, on which they cross genre boundaries and fuse influences from cumbia, surf rock and funk. And they don&#x27;t intend to stop there: In addition to their many releases, they are also busy conquering the world&#x27;s stages and thrilling audiences with their energetic live shows.

Active since 2001, Ayyuka was one of the first bands to look back to the Turkish music of the 70s and create a new, unmistakable sound from it. Immediately after their debut album in 2007, Ayyuka shared the stage with Sonic Youth and Jonathan Richman; their third studio album Sömestr is considered a cult album among record collectors. Inspired by international names such as Dick Dale or John Frusciante as well as local heroes such as Erkin Koray or Orhan Gencebay, their music sounds guitar oriented, their fascination with film music and improvisation provides surprising twists and turns. The worldwide hype of their single Yukadans is now followed by their EP Zaman Ziyan, which leads the listener through a kaleidoscope of musical landscapes with borrowings from genres such as Afro-Beat, Funk, Boss Nova or Arabesque.

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. The versatility of singer Marianne Racine is hard to beat and her all-round musicality repeatedly leads to astonishing performances. Swing and solo flights of fancy are provided by a dream team of the younger generation: bassist Patrick Sommer &amp; drummer Andreas Wettstein with their famously - rapturously groovy interplay; Lucerne pianist Lukas Gernet with attentively sensitive sounds and singable melodies. In short: this quartet is bursting with joy of playing, humor and solid craftsmanship.

This year Bruno Spoerri is celebrating his 70th stage anniversary in Zurich - in 1954 he was awarded first prize at the Zurich Jazz Festival. The concert on November 12th will show two sides of his work; the first part with an acoustic jazz group, the second with technoid electronics. Piet Jan Blauw began his career as a visual artist, while also working as a percussionist. Early on he made objects and then began to build electronic instruments and art installations. Numerous installations and performances in Europe, the USA and Mexico followed. His performances are both auditory and visual experiences. Gabriel Schiltknecht is a percussionist with heart and soul. His musical career began with the formation SCHILDPATT. After training as a primary school teacher, he taught at the Swiss School in Accra/Ghana, played with important local musicians and acquired a wide-ranging knowledge of the drumming tradition.
