As a driving force of the highlife and Afrobeat scene in Ghana, Pat Thomas earned the nickname &quot;The Golden Voice of Africa&quot; in the 70s. And he bears this title quite rightly. He knows how to fuse different styles into an unmistakable sound; Afro-Latin meets reggae and becomes funky African disco. Together with the Kwashibu Area Band, he comes back to Moods and turns the dance floor into a wild dance floor.

In this kind of music, the emotions are so alive that you can almost touch them with your bare hands, says Ina Forsman about the appeal of soul, blues and jazz. And hardly anyone captivates her audience as much as the Finnish singer with the honey-colored voice, who, inspired by Aretha Franklin or Etta James, has found her very own, unique and emotional music: she therefore also describes her music as Cinematic Soul, which hits the nail on the head. Her songs take up space, follow a certain dramaturgy, show up like kaleidoscopic color palettes with sometimes explosive character. Stoffner & Frey mit Frantz Loriot und Nicola Romanò

Anna Frey and Flo Stoffner have been making music together as the band Anna &amp; Stoffner for over ten years. In 2019, a duo EP was released for the first time on the label Wide Ear Records, which was all about free improvisation. In 2022, the second release followed. These are pieces that demand attention and challenge common listening habits. Anna Frey&#x27;s vernacular flow – at times hard, percussive staccato, at times plaintive monotone – together with Stoffner&#x27;s improvised guitar artistry never ceases to amaze. Now, for the first time, they expand their duo into a quartet on the stage of Moods. Together with violist Frantz Loriot, who moves at the crossroads of improvised music, contemporary music and electro, and Nicola Romanò on cello, who is a member of the «ensemble für neue musik zürich» among others, they dare a musical venture with an uncertain outcome. It is to be expected that the music and the spoken text will enter into a dialogue that has hardly ever been heard before.

Iiro Rantala HEL Trio

After a decade and a half, Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala returns to his roots. He is joined by two congenial improvisers and partners: British bassist Conor Chaplin, a member of the Mercury Prize-nominated band Dinosaur, and Swedish-Norwegian drummer Anton Eger, one of the most colorful drumming personalities on the European jazz scene. Where exactly the musical journey with the HEL Trio will go, he does not reveal yet. But those who know Rantala, the classically trained master pianist with a mischievous streak, know that they can expect virtuosity with catchy and comprehensible melodies, serious music without the sacred seriousness and with plenty of surprising twists and turns. Entertaining and thrilling performances between classical music and jazz, fiery as hell (maybe that&#x27;s why the name of the trio!) and presented with a lot of humor are guaranteed.

Boubacar Traoré

In the early years of Mali&#x27;s independence, 20-year-old Boubacar Traoré picked up an electric guitar and shaped the sound of the young state. But with the military coup in 1968, his songs were banned from the radio and Traoré had to support his family as a farmer and small trader. In the late 1980s, however, his comeback was abruptly interrupted once again by the death of his wife. Traoré went to Paris and made a living as a construction worker. Finally, in 1990, he re-emerged as a musician and recorded six albums in short intervals. Very soon, Vincent Bucher&#x27;s harmonica became the sonic alter ego of Traoré&#x27;s voice and guitar playing. Since the turn of the millennium at the latest, he has been celebrated as one of the great fathers and ambassadors of modern Mandingo music, combining characteristic playing techniques and ideas from West Africa with the philosophy of the blues from the southern United States.

Trio KFE (Keller-Friedli-Eden)

Keller–Friedli–Eden play music today as if there were no yesterday - highly energetic, rhythmic music with a subtle punk attitude. Lionel Friedli plays with almost all Swiss jazz greats and international high-flyers like Stephan Eicher, Marc Ribot and Fred Frith and also won the Jazz Award of the Fondation SUISA in 2015. Second in the group is Beat Keller, who is one of the most important Swiss musicians in the field of experimental and improvised music and has developed a unique musical expression through the exploration of extended playing techniques, prepared guitar and consciously used feedback. Pianist, co-founder of the collective Gamut, co-curator of STUENZI (Rote Fabrik) and genre boundary crosser Philipp Eden completes this constellation, which one can be very excited about.

A lot has happened since New York-born Indra Rios-Moores first performed at Moods in 2016: not only did she win various awards (such as the BMW Welt Jazz Award, the Danish Music Award/Best Vocal Jazz Album and many more), but she also left a lasting impression on a whole series of renowned festivals and concert stages (Jazzopen, Festival da Jazz, Rheingau Musik Festival, Enjoy Jazz Festival, Musikfest Bremen, to name just a few). In doing so, she consistently pursues her own jazz approach, which is influenced by emotive gospel, earthy blues understanding and the pop music of great heroes. Now she returns to the Schiffbau with her new album «Freedom Road». It features her own compositions as well as classics like Tom Petty&#x27;s «I Won&#x27;t Back Down» - with virtuosity she gives these songs her very own touch and lets them shine in a new light.

Gessica Zinni aka. Taimashoe und David Meier im Duo

Gessica Zinni, aka Taimashoe loves to experiment: with language, with the echo of images and voices, pitched zithers, samples, all kinds of electronic devices and chaospads. The loose and yet narrative, sometimes almost dadaistic narrative strands of her unruly singing voice, join object-like sound figures, condense into a finely arranged, fragile sound structure, which every now and then almost threatens to collapse. At Helsinki she meets the drummer David Meier, whom one might know from Schnellertollermeier and various collaborations in the field of improvised music. He also plays in Taimashoe&#x27;s band. The two jump into DIY Rabbit Hole, improvisationally mixing gospel and shoegaze, experimental noise and codeine pop. It can get crooked and exact at the same time, the harmony is strangled sometimes, and the old feminized singer-songwriter image is squeezed through a mayonnaise tube.

The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. The album «Wenig», which will be released this evening, further defines their style as a fusion of rap, pop, punk, jazz and improvisation and is radical in its idiosyncrasy. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

Haïdouti Orkestar is a fiery brass band with a powerful rhythm section, hot accordeon and sultry voices at the forefront. The Paris-based band, with musicians* from France, Greece, Turkey, Romania and Serbia, has been exploring the musical heritage of the Balkans, Turkey, the Middle East and beyond for 14 years. In their latest album, Yuh Yuh, released this April, they show up more in concert than in party mood, singing about joy as well as suffering, exploitative politics, anger and hope. The Haidouti Orkestra is a human and musical adventure that prides itself on representing France in its diversity. In the fight against hate speech and cultural isolationism, the band does not want to build walls - on the contrary, they prefer to dance over them.

lda Nielsen&#x27;s life was turned upside down when she joined music legend Prince in 2010 and began touring with “The New Power Generation” and the 4-piece powerhouse rock band “3rdeyegirl”. She describes playing with Prince as the most magical musical journey ever. An ongoing learning experience beyond imagination. That journey continues after her years with Prince with a notable solo career. Joyce Moreno & Louis Matute Large Ensemble

Active since 1968, Joyce Moreno has composed more than 400 songs interpreted by the biggest names in Brazilian music: from Elis Regina and Gal Costa to Milton Nascimento and Sergio Mendes. Outside Brazil, her works have been picked up by Annie Lennox, Wallace Roney, Omara Portuondo, the Black Eyed Peas and others, which has already earned her four Grammy nominations. Louis Matute, who was awarded the Evidence prize by the Académie du Jazz in 2022 and the Audience Award at the ZKB Jazz Prize Festival, is recognized as one of the most interesting Swiss jazz guitarists of today. He is now one of the artists of the Fondation Montreux Jazz and is Artistes Associés à l&#x27;Abri. Louis is passionate about Brazilian music and its historical relationship with the guitar, which is why he invited the great composer, singer and guitarist Joyce Moreno for this unique collaboration.

Austrian band Shake Stew has become a true phenomenon. With their premiere at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival in 2016 and their subsequent debut record &quot;The Golden Fang&quot;, they exploded onto the scene seemingly out of nowhere. Since then, their energetic blend of hypnotic Afrobeat and jazz grooves has brought them enormous success not only in their home country, but throughout Europe. Double bill of two classic silent horror films with new live scores by SPILL and Vicente-Dikeman-Parker-Drake 20:00 Uhr	Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde John S. Robertson (USA 1920, 79 min) Virtuoso loss of control The elegant, venerable Dr. Jekyll creates a substance in his laboratory that brings out the evil in man and with which he transforms himself into the diminutive, malevolent Mr. Hyde. But he soon loses control of his alter ego. John S. Robertson&#x27;s film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson&#x27;s famous novel, with the never enough praised John Barrymore in the double leading role, was already the tenth film adaptation of the material, with additional elements of Oscar Wilde&#x27;s novel &quot;The Picture of Dorian Grey&quot; being incorporated here. Brilliantly staged and virtuously acted are the moments when the protagonist loses control and Mr. Hyde gets the upper hand. This early horror film is set to music by SPILL, the Berlin duo featuring German improviser Magda Mayas on piano and clavinet and Australian drummer extraordinaire Tony Buck, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. Magda Mayas makes use of both the interior and exterior of the piano, using amplification, preparations and objects that become extensions of the instrument itself. Tony Buck, on the other hand, has been a staple of improvised and contemporary music for over 30 years, not least with his Australian avant-garde jazz trio The Necks.

Rupert Julian&#x27;s &quot;The Phantom of the Opera&quot; is inspired by Gothic fairy tales like &quot;Beauty and the Beast&quot; and &quot;Bluebeard,&quot; but also by the disfigured veterans of the First World War. He anticipates both superheroes and psychotics, with future grand masters of horror film like Alfred Hitchcock celebrating his monstrous unveiling, the moment of unmasking and horror, over and over again. The main role of the deformed phantom, which terrifies the Paris Opera House, is played by Lon Chaney, the man of a thousand faces. The gruesome make-up he himself spent many hours applying was kept a top studio secret until the film&#x27;s premiere. This masterpiece of classic horror film is set to music by one of the most exciting free jazz quartets of the present day, featuring trumpeter Luís Vicente from Portugal, Holland-based U.S. tenor saxophonist John Dikeman, and the Rhythm Section, which first came together 30 years ago in Peter Brötzmann&#x27;s quartet &quot;Die Like a Dog,&quot; has been at the forefront of the avant-garde for decades and needs no further introduction in this setting: William Parker on double bass and Moroccan bass lute and Hamid Drake on drums and percussion.

Violeta García&#x27;s biography is impressive through and through. She is a cellist, composer, improviser and curator from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who lives in Bern and is active in the independent scene but is well versed in contemporary and cross-media experimental repertoire for cello and electronic music. Last but not least, her more than 50 albums in various editions attest to this. In 2015, García also founded a digital label and music series called TVL-REC (www.tvlrec.com), dedicated to releasing new music, experimental groups and collectives from Latin America and beyond, and running noise and extreme music series and festivals in Latin America and Europe. Camille Émaille und Anna Frey

In the context of this Carte Blanche, Camille Émaille, who is a shooting star of the improvisation scene, plays together with the rapper and lyricist Anna Frey for the first time. The audience can be curious about the immediate interplay of these idiosyncratic musicians. Percussionist Camille Émaille&#x27;s performances, among gongs and barrels, cymbals and skins, is both rope dance and sound sculpture. It is an architecture at once precarious and spectacular that comes together, a delicate and tense dramaturgy, a graceful and animalistic body-to-body with a sound material that kneads and actuates her. The collaboration between the film and photo artist Maxi Schmitz and Anna Frey has resulted in several music videos, photo series and texts to date. In 2021, they developed a film installation that is now being presented publicly for the first time as part of this Carte Blanche. The installation entitled ‘The Gap’ is a cinematic poem that deals with the fragility of existence, the crack, the pause and the simultaneous longing for gaplessness and a controllable whole. The texts by Anna Frey, which also appear in a different form in her poetry collection «So eine ist sie» and in her musical work, were recorded by Maxi Schmitz. Image and text intertwine, reinforce and expand each other. The installation is presented in the foyer of the Kunstraum Walcheturm and is open before and after the concert. Michael Heitzler became known as the clarinetist of the group &quot;Kolsimcha&quot;, with which he has traveled the world since the early 90s and led Klezmer music to new, modern shores. A few years ago, Michael Heitzler formed his own band with the three outstanding musicians Christian Gutfleisch (piano), Michael Chylewski (double bass) and Daniel Schay (drums) to pay homage to the great American and Eastern European bands of the 1920s to 1950s. The Tingvall Trio celebrates its twentieth band anniversary in 2023. It is particularly noteworthy that the trio has always performed with the same lineup since its founding until the present ninth album &quot;Birds&quot;. Hardly any other classical instrument still has as many clichés attached to it as the harp: It is supposed to sound sensual, harmonious, fragile, even ethereal. Swiss musician Linda Vogel already showed that the harp can also elicit completely different sounds with her debut album Maps to Others, released in 2019, on which she used effects devices and computer-controlled hammers to make the instrument sound sometimes like a guitar, sometimes like a synthesizer in experimental pop songs. Together with her brother Lukas Vogel, part of the internationally successful piano-electronica duo Grandbrothers, things are now much heavier, darker, more industrial. Between fragmented beats, distorted violin-like sounds and cutting-metallic spectra, the typical harp arpeggios flash out only briefly, only to be immediately alienated again and absorbed into the duo&#x27;s shimmering-electronic overall sound. Lukas Vogel operates synthesizers, effects and at the same time is able to make the strings of the harp vibrate electromagnetically via an apparatus. Electronic and acoustic, mechanical and organic, strings and oscillators merge irrevocably here - always carried by a third instrument that pervades the songs: Linda Vogel&#x27;s voice, dark, repetitive, hypnotic.

Hervé Samb & Teranga Band

Herve Samb, who comes from Dakar (Senegal), has already worked with Jimmy Cliff, Amadou &amp; Mariam, David Murray, Marcus Miller, Salif Keïta, Lisa Simone, among others, and his guitar playing can be heard on over 100 albums. In 2018 he played a fantastic concert at Moods (you can check it out here: https://www.moods.ch/streaming/stobern/alle/herve-samb-2018-01-30), so the joy is correspondingly great that he is finally coming back with a new album. The musical mixture is idiosyncratic, virtuosic and at the same time coherent. It brings together West African and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, combines them at times with hip-hop and the charm of griot music. Jazz Sabar could perhaps be called this style, with which Hervé Samb honors his country of origin and invites the audience on a musical journey to Senegal.

Afra Kane

Afra Kane, born in Vicenza, Italy, now residing in Switzerland, began playing the piano to accompany church services. Her enormous talent led her to classical piano training at prestigious conservatories. To satisfy her wide-ranging musical interests, she began writing her own songs, fusing her classical training with elements of jazz, soul, R&amp;B, funk and gospel to create a nuanced, cinematic sound. In 2019, she was honored with the Montreux Jazz Talent Award for her efforts. An international tour followed, ranging from headlining shows in New York City and Europe to a sold-out performance at Café Carlyle in Hong Kong. 2022 saw the release of Kane&#x27;s debut album “Hypersensitive” rich with expansive production, soulful sensibility and her truly unique lyrical voice.

Leenalchi

Leenalchi shows us how experimental and avant-garde the K-pop scene can be. The band from Seoul has dedicated itself to reinterpreting the Korean storytelling genre Pansori, which is characterized by a special performance style with vocals and percussion. The band sings verses of traditional Korean fairy tales and draws musical inspiration from alt-rock and eighties new wave. By dissecting and rearranging traditional elements, the result is music that is forward-looking, but at the same time strongly rooted in tradition. In Korea itself, the band has long been established, filling concert halls, winning various Korean Music Awards, and appearing in a Netflix production. Leenalchi gained international attention in 2020 with Tiger Is Coming and subsequently thrilled audiences at renowned festivals including Roskilde, Pohoda, Womad, Fusion and the FMM Festival in Portugal.

Trumpeter Matthew Halsall is a pioneer. With his compositions and his label Godwana Records, he has succeeded in developing jazz and bringing it into the present. In contrast to his London colleagues, who rock the scene with danceable club sounds, Matthew Halsall convinces above all with clear, calm arrangements that leave room for improvisation. In his music Halsall amalgamates elements of the British jazz scene with the inspiring sounds of spiritual jazz by Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders. Added to this are the powerful rhythms of global sound and the futuristic sounds of electronica.

Olufemi Sanyaolu aka Keziah Jones was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Shuttling between London and Paris and always accompanied by his guitar, Jones earned a reputation as a unique musician and charismatic performer with his distinctive hard funk style. In 1992, he released his debut album Blufunk Is A Fact! with the first single and the now classic Rhythm Is Love, which became a worldwide hit. Keziah has cited Fela Kuti, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix as important musical influences. His now legendary sound has been described as blufunk, which is basically a blend of punk-funk attitude and Yoruba rhythms that he has developed over the years. The concert is in collaboration with Culturescapes, a cross-disciplinary arts festival. With each edition, Culturescapes seeks to promote cross-border dialogue and mutual learning between cultures, as well as collaboration and networking. The founders of the festival believe that cultural relations and understanding are a fundamental prerequisite for more inclusive, open and just societies. The festival takes place every two years and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Deeply influenced by Creole music as well as American jazz and folk, Leyla McCalla&#x27;s music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful and witty. Her music vibrates with three centuries of history, yet feels strikingly fresh and unique. Leyla McCalla draws inspiration from her past and present, whether it&#x27;s her Haitian heritage or her adopted home of New Orleans. The bilingual multi-instrumentalist and former member of the Grammy-winning African-American string band, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, has developed a distinctive sound that reflects her roots and her experiences. Her latest album, &quot;Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever,&quot; explores the legacy of Radio Haiti, the first private Creole-language radio station in Haiti, as well as the journalists who risked and lost their lives to be on the air for nearly 50 years. The result is simultaneously a work of radical performance art, historical scholarship, and personal memoir, a sweeping and powerful meditation on family, democracy, and free expression that could not have come at a better time.

Kassa Overall, jazz musician, MC, singer, producer and drummer, reaches new heights with his fusion of jazz and rap. His musical background of West Coast G-Funk is just as audible as sounds from the New York underground. In his decade and a half in the Big Apple, Kassa Overall played with jazz greats such as Christian McBride, Ravi Coltrane and Geri Allen. In addition, he participated in recordings by Yoko Ono, worked with the alternative rap project Das Racist and played in the TV house band of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. After the constant hustle, Kassa was tired and decided to devote himself to his own project. On his latest album, Animals, Kassa continues to push his kaleidoscopic, subversive vision. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the spirit of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart.

Takuya Kuroda is considered one of Japan&#x27;s leading contemporary jazz musicians. The Kobe-born, New York-based trumpeter is a forward-thinking musician who has developed a unique hybrid sound that blends soulful jazz, funk, post-bop, fusion and hip-hop. In his luggage, Takuya has his latest and already his seventh,studio album Midnight Crisp (released 2022) which he produced entirely himself and which follows the highly acclaimed album Fly Moon Die Soon from 2020.

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc)

WITCH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) were Zambia&#x27;s biggest rock band in the 1970s and were at the forefront of a new genre called zamrock. They fused influences ranging from the Rolling Stones to Black Sabbath to James Brown, and blended them with traditional African rhythms and songs. At the height of their popularity, the band often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Jagari - whose name is an Africanization of Mick Jagger&#x27;s name - roiled the crowd. As Zambia&#x27;s economy stagnated and the country suffered from the AIDS crisis, WITCH disbanded. Jagari, now the only surviving member of the original lineup, retreated to a life of quasi-anonymity as a university music professor before being wrongfully arrested in Zambia&#x27;s toughest hour. Now a man in his 60s, he spends his time mining gemstones. WITCH didn&#x27;t receive greater attention outside their home country until 2012, when Now Again Records reissued their entire discography. In 2016 Jagari began a collaboration with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskoviç, and together with them WITCH is coming to Moods in November.

Churches and jazz clubs have one thing in common: in both places you can hear improvised music - but what happens when these two worlds meet? Daniel Schenker (trumpet, flugelhorn) and Elisabeth Berner (organ) enter into an improvised dialogue about church hymns and their own compositions. In doing so, they are connecting the rhythmic and harmonic peculiarities of jazz into with the tonal peculiarities of the church organ, creating truly experimental and surprising sounds. Yoni Mayraz Trio

Yoni Mayraz, who grew up in Tel Aviv and lives in London, has made a name for himself in the British new jazz scene since 2020 with a few singles and the EP «Rough Cuts». On his debut album «Dybbuk Tse!» he combines jazz with elements of 90s New York hip-hop, old-school breakbeats and Middle Eastern music. In Jewish folklore, the «Dybbuk» in the title is the spirit of someone dead in sin who drives into a living body. «Dybbuk Tse!» is the command to the spirit to leave the afflicted body. In this sense, the debut album can be read as the exorcism of evil spirits.

Fendika & K-Sanchis

Melaku Belay is one of the most renowned dancers in Ethiopia. He has immense knowledge of traditional dance forms from the different regions of Ethiopia and knows how to combine them with modern elements (which has earned him the nickname &quot;Walking Earthquake&quot;). At the same time, he is also the founder of the Fendika Cultural Center and a member of the house band of the same name. Fendika &amp; K-Sanchis is a collaboration with Zurich musicians Jeroen Visser (baritone sax) and Steve Buchanan (alto sax), who did a short residency at Moods in 2021. This resulted in the album &quot;GOJO&quot; in 2022. On nine tracks, they pay refreshing tribute to the golden age of ethio-jazz, with Ethiopian instruments such as the krar (Ethiopian lyre), the masinqo (one-stringed violin) and the kebero (hand drum) taking center stage. Rhythm changes, experimental improvisations and wild outbursts complete the hypnotic and energetic overall mood of the album, creating a charged playing field for the captivating voice of Nardos Tesfaw. On stage, the atmosphere is brought to a boil by the dynamic performance of Melaku Belay and singer and dancer Emebet Woldetsdik.
