Alessio Menconi, guitarist from Genoa, who has performed on stage with Billy Cobham, Paolo Conte, Jimmy Cobb and many others, celebrates the centenary of his idol Wes Montgomery (Indianapolis, March 6, 1923 - June 15, 1968) with his trio. The trio performs Montgomery&#x27;s own compositions as well as other pieces typical of him and arranges them in a very personal way, without ever forgetting the original sound.

Band-it enables young bands and musicians to present themselves to a larger audience and a jury under professional conditions. In June, they show their skills at six qualifications throughout the canton of Zurich. Indie rock, German pop, Balkan sound, singer/songwriter, hip hop and punk: since 1989, over 1600 bands from all musical genres have taken part in this Newcomer Band Festival. For many of these young talents, Band-it has been a launch pad to great success, such as Faber, Evelinn Trouble, Pablo Infernal and Sebass. Admission is free. A project of Migros Kulturprozent and the Education Department of the Canton of Zurich.

Akutuk Origins

Moods Summer Special in der Barfussbar

Akutuk is a percussion technique from Cameroon: water is used as an instrument, played with bare hands and accompanied by singing. It is an exclusively female practice that is passed down from woman to woman over generations. The Akutuk Origins project aims to revive this almost lost cultural heritage and make it visible in public spaces. A hypnotic but surprisingly versatile sound that will unfold its full power in the wonderful setting of the Barfussbar. Supported by the Südkulturfonds. Imagine Fela Kuti jamming in an bar in a nameless, global metropolis with Martin Denny, but it is on glass harp… While this might sound like a sensationalist figment of an over-heated music journalist’s brain, it is not too far from what Os Barbapapas are able to achieve. The band from the music metropolis of Sao Paulo is named after the iconic but weird cartoon series from the 1970s. And the band members are just as amorphous and shapeshifting as the characters in the series: they learned gnawa in Morocco, have performed in circuses and built various instruments of their own. On their new album, appropriately named Enigma, the original seed of Os Barbapapas&#x27; global underground vibes comes to full bloom.

The four musicians, rooted in the Zurich jazz scene, have known each other for over 20 years and play together not only as permanent members of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, but also in a variety of other formations. The quartet, which was formed especially for the Carte Blanche Festival, offers its own material with melodious jazz and plenty of interplay. As co-leader of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter and flugelhorn player Daniel Schenker is a central figure in the Zurich jazz scene. He has already recorded numerous albums (also in his own formation with American saxophonist Chris Cheek) and toured with musicians such as Kenny Werner, Joe Haider, George Gruntz and Bill Holman. The elegance of Paris meets the creativity of Zurich. Rafael Schilt and François Lana, two masters of their craft, compose their music together and let it shine on stage like stars in the night sky. Their music tells stories of love, loss and hope that flow directly from their hearts and touch the souls of their listeners. Rafael Schilt is as versatile as he is inspired - his compositions borrow elements from pop and modern dance music as well as from free contemporary improvisation - and his stage partners include Nils Wogram, Norbert Pfammatter, Colin Vallon, Bänz Oester and Kurz Rosenwinkel, to name but a few.

Unfortunately, the concert of Tamriko Kordzaia &quot;KIOSK&quot; has to be postponed. The musicians Russudan Meipariani, Tamriko Kordzaia, Lena Kiepenheuer and scenographer Sophie Krayer, who have come together from (almost) all corners of the globe - Georgia, Switzerland and Germany - to form an eclectic ensemble, create a play with song forms from different epochs: They combine songs and playing styles, bring in Franz Schubert and Guillaume de Machaut and premiere music by Georgian composers such as Anushka Chkheidze, Nika Machaidze, Russudan Meipariani and Natalie Beridze. Natalie Beridze will also take part in the performance of her own pieces written for Ensemble Kiosk. The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

Few classical instruments are as clichéd as the harp: This instrument of the gods is said to sound sensual, harmonious, fragile, even ethereal. But Swiss musician Linda Vogel proves that the harp can also produce quite different sounds as well. Together with her brother Lukas Vogel, who is part of the internationally successful piano-electronica duo Grandbrothers, she now takes a much more powerful, darker, industrial approach. Using synthesizers and effect devices, electronic and acoustic, machine and organic, strings and oscillators merge - always carried by a third instrument that runs through the songs: Linda Vogel&#x27;s voice, dark, repetitive, hypnotic. Together with Tillman Ostendarp, the drum triptych of Domi Chansorn, Arthur Hnatek and Mario Hänni seek enlightenment in the eternally repetitive waters of woody primal beats and mutually shifting odd meters. Join them on an exhilarating adventure and discover new heights and depths of groove. Jack of all trades or child prodigy? One thing is clear: Domi Chansorn is one of the most exciting figures on the Swiss music scene. The singer, drummer, guitarist, pianist and composer is a musician with every fibre of his being. He plays jazz and avant-garde pop as well as prog rock and thoughtful songwriting material, sometimes psychedelic rock, sometimes electronic, dark and emotional.

The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam offers an important platform for the Swiss jazz jam scene. After the musical opening of the jam band, lively and exciting sound conversations begin between musicians who spontaneously meet on stage, reflecting the diversity of jazz in all its facets. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam is supported by the non-profit association JazzBaragge. After the first set the entry fee will be CHF 10.– as usual.

Etran De L'Aïr

Welcome to Agadez, the capital of Saharan rock! With her dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun-bleached melodies, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr has earned themself a permanent place in the guitar music of Agadez. While other Tuareg guitarists are oriented towards western rock, Etran de L&#x27;Aïr plays a pan-African style that is typical of their home town and quotes a variety of cultural influences: from northern Malian blues to Hausa bar bands to Congolese soukous. The music evokes the exuberance of a wedding in Agadez, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars, while simultaneous solos sweep over each other playfully and with restrained precision; powerful but never exuberant. «Lieder aus dem Schneckenhaus» feat. Anna Trauffer

A double premiere! Irina Ungureanu and Anna Trauffer will be on stage together for the first time. And: Irina Ungureanu will also perform her own songs in Swiss German for the first time. But Romanian folk songs from her childhood will also find a place in the programme. The two musicians will accompany each other with a multi-instrumental setup ranging from violin and zither to piano and various objects. You can look forward to a poetic, thoughtful, smiling and sometimes bizarre evening of words, sounds and songs.

The two ECM artists Kaspar Rast and Björn Meyer succeed in achieving flights of fancy despite their down-to-earth approach thanks to their many years of collaboration on Ronin and Asita Hamidis Bazar. The transformative power of music can be felt immediately with Kaspar and Björn. Marcel and Thomas have been playing together since Thomas was 10 minutes old. Other dimensions. Time does not exist. The Afrobeats scene has virtually exploded in recent years, which is also reflected in the lively party scene that has developed around this genre. At the forefront from the beginning: &quot;Afrobeats Explosion&quot; at Moods. From its origins with Fela Kuti in the 70s to Wizkid – get ready for a special kind of dance explosion!

Enji

Mongolian singer Enji first came into contact with jazz at the Goethe-Institut in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. She later studied jazz singing in her adopted home of Munich, where she now also realized her new album Ulaan (2023). The reactions to the album were overwhelming: #1 in the Washington Post, Best Jazz Albums of 2023 in the New York Times and hhv-mag. This spring, singer Enji will be touring Europe for the first time as a trio with guitarist Paul Brändle and River Adomeit on double bass: sensitive chamber jazz that meets the folklore of Mongolia.

Riff Cohen

Riff Cohen combines her Tunisian and Algerian heritage with her Israeli identity to create music that transcends cultural boundaries. With the release of her debut album A Paris (2010), which was created during an artist residency in the French capital, she laid the foundation for an international career that led to collaborations with Enrico Macias and Goran Bregović. She sings in Hebrew, Arabic, French and English; her music is characterized by Persian, Turkish, Iraqi, Moroccan, Algerian and Berber influences as well as elements of Israeli oriental music of the 90s. Riff Cohen uses the platform she is given as an artist to build a bridge between different cultures through music.

L`anno della valanga

The project &quot;L&#x27;anno della valanga&quot; refers to the book of the same name (English: The long winter) by the Ticino writer Giovanni Orelli. It combines literature and music. Images such as the village community snowed in in the Bedretto Valley serve as subtext for the musicians, allowing them to develop musical arcs. The mostly slow-moving improvisations and compositions unfold into spherical moods - at times light and clear, at times gloomy and confused - but also with a brutal force into a rousing current, only to dissolve in the shimmer of the bone-chilling cold.
