Hommage an Sarah Vaughan: «The Divine One»

In 2024 we will celebrate the centenary of the birth of Sarah Vaughan, one of the greatest jazz singers in history. Her career spanned almost five decades and she performed with a wide range of top jazz musicians and big bands. She won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for nine. In 1989 she was named an NEA Jazz Master and critic Scott Yanow wrote that she was &#x27;...one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century&#x27;. Sarah Vaughan began her professional career in the early 1940s as a singer in the big bands of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine, where she met and sang with such jazz innovators as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. For most of her highly successful career she played in small jazz groups, but she returned to big bands on several occasions and in 1954 began a fruitful artistic partnership with Count Basie that lasted for decades. The last album Sarah Vaughan recorded with the Count Basie Orchestra was &#x27;Send In The Clowns&#x27; in 1981, and Sandy Patton has preserved the Count Basie Orchestra&#x27;s original arrangements, which she has generously shared with the Zurich Jazz Orchestra. These original arrangements will form the core of the programme, and we will play some classic Count Basie instrumentals to complement the wonderfully swinging vocal charts. As always, the great ensemble playing and excellent soloists of the Zurich Jazz Orchestra will be featured.

The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam offers an important platform for the Swiss jazz jam scene. After the musical opening of the jam band, lively and exciting sound conversations begin between musicians who spontaneously meet on stage, reflecting the diversity of jazz in all its facets. The JazzBaragge Wednesday Jam is supported by the non-profit association JazzBaragge. There is no presale for JazzBaragge, only box office.

Trio Heinz Herbert

The music of the Zurich trio Heinz Herbert is urban, sometimes hectic, and yet leaves room to breathe. They let themselves be seduced by sounds, jump on the patterns of drum machines and drift off into spheres of minimal music and industrial jazz. The equality of all sounds magically attracts us - the quiet, the inharmonic, the harmonic, the zooming in and out, field recordings, 4/4, polyrhythms, &#x27;in sync - out of sync&#x27;. We try to give equal importance to each of these sounds, ideas or concepts to create music that is often structured in non-traditional ways,&quot; the trio said in an interview with Luke Fowler. Released in February 2024, «Tomorrow Wonderland» is the Swiss band&#x27;s fifth album. Two years in the making, it is the result of over 12 years of living and working together and is a thrilling, ever-evolving and unique journey with strange harmonies, elegant microtimings and intense colour tones.

Sarah Büchi has studied various types of music in order to develop songwriting, world and jazz in a highly personal way. In September 2024, the Swiss singer released her seventh album as a bandleader on the Intakt Records label. «pink mountain sagas» delivers what the name promises: with her warm and dark voice, Sarah Büchi takes us into the imaginative world of sagas, sometimes sung picturesquely, sometimes rhythmically, sometimes the pieces sound like a soundtrack from a film, then again they are replaced by jazzy passages.

And when the spectacle is over, the listener is sent home with a feeling of bittersweet melancholy.

Since her beginnings, she has adopted a do-it-yourself approach to music, cultivating her taste for artisanal creations, exchanges with like-minded people, analogue and, above all, independence. Singer, writer and multi-instrumentalist Laure Betris draws not only from all musical (rock, techno, noise, etc.) and artistic (visual arts, literature, dance, etc.) genres, but also from the library of languages (English, French, Chaldean) and the richness of her collaborations. In a duet with drummer and singer Yann Hunziker from Vevey, she proposes a form of total artisanship that is both therapeutic and magical.

In Memoriam Fredy Studer

From 1972 to 1982, OM were one of the great improvising jazz-rock bands in Europe. Polyrhythmic thickets or deep cosmic space: &#x27;Electric Jazz Free Music&#x27; was the powerful label of those years. After a 25-year break, Christy Doran, Urs Leimgruber, Bobby Burri and Fredy Studer reunited as OM for the first time in 2006 at the KKL Luzern: with unbroken vitality, rich in new experiences, but also more subtle and fierce than ever. Two years ago, shortly before the band&#x27;s 50th anniversary, drummer Fredy Studer died unexpectedly. The anniversary became In Memoriam Fredy Studer. Gerry Hemingway and Tony Buck play in his place. In &#x27;Fragmente&#x27;, sound and rhythmic material from recent years - in the form of minimal fragments - form the basis of their new works. The improvisation of jazz, the energy of rock, contemporary sounds, noise and electronic sounds are mixed into the new OM texture, which never loses sight of its original vision. TCB Music SA and SRG are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the wonderful jazz series Swiss Radio Days. They are celebrating with the release of two new albums, #49 and #50, by two fantastic pianists Marc Copland and Dado Moroni. Marc Copland is an extremely sensitive pianist with a precise conception of music and a perfect blend of sensuality, sensitivity and rationality. More than almost any other jazz pianist, he shapes his own style, which - far removed from the all-too-frequent speed marathon - is characterized by sound painting, the finest nuances and melodious calm. His colorful interpretation and surprising, unusual harmonic twists and turns enchant and take you to other worlds.

The cross-genre project Kyoto Jazz Massive, founded by the Okino brothers and discovered by Gilles Peterson, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with new album release and a refreshed line-up. Under the direction of Shuya Okino, with Vanessa Freeman on lead vocals, KJM will be supported by the powerful Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra, showcasing their unique crossover vision from jazz-funk, broken beat, and soulful house to cosmic grooves and everything in between! After a highly energetic night in late December 2023, they are back to rock Zurich out of its socks.

Thomas Bohnet has been active as a DJ for 40 years. The Munich concert promoter and music journalist has worked or is working for media such as Musikexpress, Spex, taz, Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Zurich weekly WoZ, the Swiss music magazine Loop and Swiss radio SRF3 and formerly DRS 3 (Sounds). He has been touring the clubs with his TOUR DE FRANCE since May 2000: Munich, Düsseldorf, Erlangen, Constance are regularly on the program, from 2017-2022 also the Zurich Kosmos. The parties offer a danceable musical tour through the styles and genres of France. RUTHER LANA &amp; MISS C-LINE is a trio from Switzerland, formed by drummer Jonas Ruther with MISS C-LINE rap, vocals and FX, François Lana on synthesiser and sampler. With influences from modern rap and beat culture, combined with collective improvisation and complex psychedelic sound structures, the three strong personalities create a very intense musical experience on stage. For his Carte Blanche, Ruther invites the Senegalese rapper Gaston Bandimic, who raps in Wolof and ignites an impressive rhythmic fire live.

With their Shaman Techno-Folk-Hybrid, which is firmly rooted in the religious poetry of the Anatolian Alewi, and their energy-loaded punky attitude, the band Insanlar has cultivated a mystical fan base. The release of the hypnoti  stomper «Kime Ne» on the British label Honest Jon&#x27;s in 2015 catapulted the band onto the international stage. The individual blend of traditional Anatolian/Mesopotamian instrumentation, electronic music and spiritual/philosophical texts totally captivates the audience.
