What an anniversary! In the year of his 80th birthday, Marcos Valle is also celebrating sixty years on stage. The Brazilian composer, producer, songwriter and musician belongs to the second generation of bossa nova and his 1998 album Nova Bossa Nova became a model for Brazilian electro and contemporary Brazilian jazz. Look forward to a danceable concert full of Brazilian rhythms, from samba and bossa nova to psychedelic Música Popular Brasileria, enriched with jazz improvisations, funk and disco rhythms. And last but not least, hits like &#x27;Summer Samba&#x27; and &#x27;Estrelar&#x27; that will catapult you straight into that beach holiday feeling. In collaboration with Adalu.

Dancehall Mood is the monthly reggae and dancehall party at Moods. Like on every first Saturday of the month, the K.O.S crew will make the Moods club cooking with hot riddims. This promises an evening full of dancehall hits and reggae rarities, perfectly tuned to the respective audience and immaculately presented by the K.O.S crew and their guest.

Afrobeats Explosion

The Afrobeats scene has virtually exploded in recent years, which is also reflected in the lively party scene that has developed around this genre. At the forefront from the beginning: &quot;Afrobeats Explosion&quot; at Moods. From its origins with Fela Kuti in the 70s to Wizkid – get ready for a special kind of dance explosion!

ZKB Jazzpreis Festival 2024

For over twenty years, Zürcher Kantonalbank has been supporting young, innovative Swiss bands with the ZKB Jazzpreis at Moods. Winning the prize not only brings financial support, but often also inclusion in the Pro Helvetia Foundation&#x27;s priority jazz promotion programme, giving the band the opportunity to present their music on international stages. The festival is a six-day event full of music and talent. Six nominated bands are given the chance to present themselves to a jury of national and international experts and a broad audience. The bands not only have to impress with their musical quality, but also demonstrate their professionalism and show their development potential.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band

The name says it all: the Amsterdam Klezmer Band plays klezmer and adds a pinch of jazz, Balkan or gypsy to the mix. The band started out as a group of street musicians in 1996 and has played countless live shows since then. In February 2024, they released their twentieth album &quot;Bomba Pop&quot;, which was produced by Ulf Lindemann aka Dunkelbunt. The sound on it is as we know it and yet it is so much more: beats that range from dub to hip-hop to dance music also like to sneak in. A danceable journey around the world!

Lyrical melodies and virtuoso solos alternate with groovy passages in wi»ch the band&#x27;s Cuban roots are clearly evident: The seven musicians of El Comité came together in Toulouse in 2017 when they gave an impromptu concert – which was also the starting signal for the formation of the band. The band members had previously played with various big names from the Cuban music scene, such as Issac Delgado and Bueno Vista Social Club. El Comité have since released their second album «Carrousel» (2024), which effortlessly spans the arc from jazz to Cuban groove. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

La Sonora Mazurén

La Sonora Mazurén are the latest representatives of Bogotá&#x27;s lively alternative music scene. The seven musicians are influenced by traditional rhythms and sounds from Ecuador, Colombia and Peru and enrich them with synths and electric guitar. This is how they have developed their very own sound, which can be described as trippy cumbia, psychedelic chicha or African fuzz. A must for lovers of bands like the Meridian Brothers and for anyone curious to discover the new Tropsychedelica sound of Colombia. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

The Benin International Musical combines traditional rhythms and songs from the voodoo culture with electronic melodies, trip-hop grooves, hip-hop and rock from Benin&#x27;s trendy club scene. With their project, the collective aims to revive the diverse musical heritage of their ancestors and make it accessible to a wide audience. The traditional voodoo culture, which was spread in the wake of slavery, may be unknown to many, but it laid the foundations for musical movements such as jazz, blues, salsa and hip-hop. Three Swiss jazz musicians from three different generations: Drummer Daniel Humair, bassist Heiri Känzig and trombonist Samuel Blaser form together the trio &quot;Helveticus&quot;. Founded in 2020, the band is now on tour with their second album &quot;Our Way&quot; on which they remain true to their concept: the repertoire includes original compositions, jazz standards and interpretations of Swiss folk songs from different parts of the country.

An expressive singer who doesn&#x27;t mince her words: Bia Ferreira uses her music to speak out against racism, homophobia and in favour of equality. The lyrics of the Brazilian singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer are direct, in her songs Afro-diasporic rhythms such as soul, R&#x27;n&#x27;B, reggae and rap meet Brazilian music styles such as samba and repente. The result is a powerful sound that conveys a clear message: No to any form of discrimination and yes to love. In collaboration with Adalu.

Kurt Rosenwinkel's NEXT STEP

Jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has been active on the jazz scene for over 30 years and is one of the most distinguished guitarists of his generation. During his career, he has worked with countless musicians such as Eric Harland, Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman and many more. Now he is on tour with the original The Next Step band and the album ‘The Next Step: Live at Smalls (1996)’, newly released on Rosenwinkel&#x27;s own label Heartcore Records. On it, he explores the boundaries of jazz with complex harmonies and lyrical melodies.

Bill Laurance Solo

Five-time Grammy winner, pianist and composer Bill Laurance has already travelled a remarkable journey through a wide variety of formations and styles. Originally starting out as a classical pianist, he co-founded the fusion power collective Snarky Puppy and has played with the trip-hop trio Morcheeba as well as with jazz greats such as guitarist Lionel Loueke. And his creative drive still seems unchecked: he has released three albums in the last two years, including the solo album «Affinity» (2022), the duo album «Where you wish you were» with Michael League and most recently «Bloom» (2024) together with the string orchestra The Untold Orchestra. This time, Bill Laurance is coming to Moods solo and you can look forward to a concert full of joyful playing, creativity and improvisation.

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Nikki Iles

«Female Composers» Series 

Award-winning jazz pianist and composer Nikki Iles was a founding member of the Creative Jazz Orchestra and has worked with Mike Gibbs, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler and Anthony Braxton. She has freelanced with Art Farmer, Julian Arguelles, Claire Martin and Christine Jenson and has been in the studio with Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Tina May, Rufus Reid, Stan Sulzmann and Dave Holland. Although she is known as a pianist, composing is and remains very important to her. Recently, she has received various commissions for compositions from renowned big bands all over the world. Nikki Iles is Professor of Jazz Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Some time ago, the ZJO launched the «Female Composers» series. The ZJO is particularly pleased to be working with Nikki Iles this season. This is the British composer&#x27;s first appearance as conductor of an orchestra in Switzerland.

Jasmine Myra is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader from Leeds and is part of the city&#x27;s vibrant, creative and cross-genre music scene, which is bursting with young talent. Her euphoric and uplifting sound draws influences from Bonobo, Ólafur Arnalds and Kenny Wheeler, artists whose music shares an emotive quality that you can also hear in Myra’s own compositions.

Big Daddy Wilson & The Goosebumps Bros.

A soul voice that gives you goosebumps: Big Daddy Wilson casts a special spell on his listeners with his dark baritone. The American blues singer-songwriter and his long-standing backing band «The Goosebumps Bros.» will be presenting their new, jointly recorded album «Plan B» (2023) on this tour. They will take their audience on a musical journey through the many nuances of black music, ranging from roots blues to classic soul and from folk to contemporary urban grooves.

Two wind instruments and a rhythm section: the quartet Lotus Crash likes to experiment with this line-up without a harmony instrument, makes use of contemporary instrumental techniques and gives free rein to their joy of improvisation. Their repertoire includes original compositions as well as selected pieces by their favourite musicians such as Andrew Cyrill, Roscoe Mitchell and Adam Lane. Creative jazz that can also be a little unconventional from time to time.

Fulu Miziki

The name says it all! Roughly translated, Fulu Miziki means «music made from rubbish» and that is also the concept behind this eco-friendly afro-futuristic punk collective: the musicians make their own instruments, costumes and masks from discarded objects such as canisters, metal cans and PVC pipes. Their message is unmistakable: the multidisciplinary artists from the Congo want to draw attention to the accumulating waste in Kinshasa and everywhere else in the world and call on people to reconnect with nature. What does that sound like? Complex yet danceable rhythms and songs somewhere between punk, electro and Congolese rumba. Supported by the SüdKulturFonds.

Ticino singer Andrea Bignasca is returning to Moods with his fourth album: «Stranger» will be released in October 2024 and tells stories of creating and writing songs, of becoming a father and love; and of the fears, doubts and joys that all these things bring with them. Bignasca&#x27;s sound has evolved since his debut album «Gone» in 2015 and has become a little more refined, with 80s drums and synths creeping in at times. Nevertheless, the songwriter remains true to himself and combines blues, rock and pop into catchy songs with his raspy voice.

From one ocean to another - The TWO have never been afraid of wandering. On the contrary: for their third album, they have taken a giant leap from the paths of American blues to the warm shores of Mauritius, which the two have already roamed together in search of musical influences. They have now embraced these influences with their hearts and souls and packed them into their music. The result: their blues album &quot;Sadela&quot;, released in 2023.

Sometimes calm, sometimes spherical, sometimes bulky, sometimes powerful: the Colin Vallon Trio always presents itself in the most diverse facets. Based on modern Jazz, pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret and drummer Julian Sartorius create multi-layered soundscapes. They like to challenge the listener with noisy elements, bizarre sound combinations and irritating rhythms, without their sound ever losing its accessibility.

Traditional Balkan music in new arrangements: Divanhana from Sarajevo combine urban styles with the traditional sounds of the Balkans and bring the Sevdah to the world in all its beauty and diversity. The melodies merge with jazz, folk, modern classical and pop without losing their emotional power. With this mixture, Divanhana succeeds time and again in making the familiar sound new.

Yemen Blues is the band around the charismatic singer Ravid Kahalani, who grew up between Yemeni tradition and Western modernity. This is clearly reflected in the band&#x27;s sound, in which traditional Yemeni melodies meet blues, jazz and funk. With their captivating music, Yemen Blues are able to transcend not only genre boundaries but also national borders: Both on stage and in the audience, they bring people from different cultures together.

Tonight with Jools Holland - the British music legend returns! The multi-talent became known in 1974 with the new wave formation Squeeze, and since 1992 he has hosted the successful music show &quot;Later... with Jools Holland&quot; on BBC, while also touring with his own boogie-woogie, R&#x27;n&#x27;B and pop program. He is always accompanied by a top-class line-up. This year he will be supported by the Jamaican R&#x27;n&#x27;B voice Ruby Turner.

The lower floor of the club is at ground level and accessible without steps. There is one accessible bathroom which can be used with a Eurokey. The bar is not accessible and is approximately 1.20 metres high.

DJ Leila Moon is a songwriter, producer, and DJ specialising in Funk, Disco, Raï, Gnawa, Afrobeat, R’n’B, Mahraganat, Electronic, and House. Growing up in multicultural Basel, she was raised by an Algerian mother and a Moroccan father, watching anime and Bollywood on TV, listening to Raï music, Arab Pop, French Chansons, American Folk, and Jazz. Working on her very own music by songwriting, producing, and passionately sharing it with others, she went on a personal journey that traced her back to her roots, shaped, and strengthened her identity. Leila&#x27;s collective influences and intercultural experiences culminate in her energetic and eclectic live set performances. For the Nowruz festival, she is well prepared to play her favorite gems with explosive dancefloor energy.

Anna Frey

The band Anna &amp; Stoffner with Membrez and Mantel captivates with a highly energetic interplay of virtuoso musicians and urgent, unsparing lyrics. Rapper Anna Frey and guitarist Flo Stoffner, with Vincent Membrez on synthesizers and Lukas Mantel on drums, develop an intensity that is hard to resist. «Less than little is nothing, but little is more than nothing, little makes a difference.» This band is not afraid of the void and does not cover it up, but faces it, follows it and thus develops its own language, with driving grooves, poppy melodies, free improvisation, idiosyncratic guitars and dark, engaging basses. Rapper Anna Frey moves over this musical diversity with her poetic lyrics. Sometimes in singsong, sometimes in harsh phrasing. Always in search of the immediate expression.

A double premiere! Irina Ungureanu and Anna Trauffer will be on stage together for the first time. And: Irina Ungureanu will also perform her own songs in Swiss German for the first time. Sometimes very calm and unagitated, sometimes so moving that it&#x27;s hard not to dance along or howl with emotion. We are looking forward to a unique and emotional evening, also thanks to the participation of the choir &quot;The Chor&quot; from Zürich, lead by Heidi&#x27;s sister Anet Zemp.

A woman. A musician. A mother. A 37-year-old. A foreigner. Because of our identities, we often feel compelled, consciously or unconsciously, to fit into predetermined patterns. FRAME.OUT is a musical storytelling about personal boundaries and social conventions. Victoria Mozalevskaya invites the audience on a journey that explores the facets of life. Together with singer Song Yi Jeon, whose voice captivates the audience, and the energetic, innovative sound of the duo Lada Obradovic and David Tixier, the quartet delves deep into its musical world – into complex grooves and experimental sound formation in the context of contemporary jazz. It is an exploration of the individual stories that make the four musicians who they are and how they reflect the world through their music.

Back in 2009, their fresh rock/post-rock electronic sound, described as euphoric, holistic, spacey, and raucous quickly catapulted the Jordanian-Palestinian band from Amman to massive success; an artistic journey that saw them become one of the leading socially and politically outspoken bands reviving the Arab independent music scene. El Morabba3 broke cultural barriers and appealed to a generation of hunger-stricken fans living in an unstable and restless region, as they craved a new sound; one that expressed the thoughts, concerns, and anger of the people towards the realities they are living today. Today, Muhammad Abdulla and Basel Naouri live in Berlin, they have restructured the band and take El Morabba3&#x27;s earlier aesthetic evolution into a new direction. Departing from the raw post-rock energy of the first album and the polished instrumental/electronic fervor of the second, the artists have taken a deep dive into experimentation with electronic tunes and storytelling.

Yumi Ito, a Swiss singer with Polish-Japanese roots, moves effortlessly between genres and her roles as singer, pianist, composer and improviser. She has performed twice with the ZJO, and Ed Partyka is very much looking forward to arranging some of Yumi&#x27;s brand new compositions. The audience can expect an evening of unusual sounds, refreshing and inspiring moments – and surprises: As Yumi Ito&#x27;s music is conceived and composed for smaller ensembles, Ed Partyka&#x27;s big band arrangements open up new worlds of sound.

From Guadeloupe, Grammy nominated vocalist, songwriter and producer Malika Tirolien is an explosive mix of creativity, dedication and genuineness. Her love, passion and respect for music can be felt in the sparkling authenticity of her performances in which her soaring voice immediately grabs your attention and her well-crafted compositions present effusive emotions through conscious and engaged lyrics. Montreal based, she has been garnering international attention for almost a decade, striking with her electrifying performance on “Iʼm not the one”, a prime track on the Grammy-winning album “Family Dinner” by Snarky Puppy that has been inspiring countless covers worldwide. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Siselabonga

Siselabonga are back with a new EP called &#x27;In Stone&#x27;. This time, South African singer-songwriter Nongoma takes the mic as the group moves through a kaleidoscopic mix of acoustic and electronic sounds. The rhythmic foundation is West African to the core, with selected elements of hip-hop, soul, Afrobeats and electro-pop thrown in for good measure. Lively, sensual and transcendent. This concert recording was made with the support of Migros Culture Percentage.

Nubiyan Twist

Acclaimed by the press and critics, celebrated by fans, part of the crème de la crème of British jazz, Nubiyan Twist from Leeds bring together virtuoso musicians, experienced producers and inspired composers under the direction of Tom Excell. Together they create an unmistakable, infectious big band sound with influences from jazz, hip hop, Afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music – a captivating, powerful musical experience.

Adi Oasis

Hailing from the French Caribbean and living in Brooklyn, Adi Oasis is currently taking the music world by storm. Since launching her solo career in 2018, she has performed with Anderson .Paak, Gregory Porter, JUNGLE, Masego, Thundercat, appeared at festivals such as the Newport Jazz Fest, Love Supreme or Montreux Jazz Festival and the stream of rave reviews just won&#x27;t dry up. On her debut album &quot;Lotus Glow&quot;, released in 2023, Adi Oasis combines her retro-futuristic signature sound, her soaring voice and her spectacular bass playing to create a very personal and political work that particularly reflects the reality of her life as a Black female immigrant in America. &quot;Lotus Glow represents the flower I&#x27;ve blossomed into, the artist I&#x27;ve worked on becoming all my life. The glow is where I am going next. It&#x27;s my destiny.&quot;

The newly formed 10-piece ensemble MetaLogue, led by singer Nina Reiter, is reviving the music of Lucerne composer Mani Planzer, who died in 1997 and was almost forgotten. As a musician, composer, organist, teacher, choirmaster and big band leader, Planzer had a decisive influence on the cultural landscape of Central Switzerland. He was awarded the Lucerne City Prize for Art and Culture in 1981 and the Lucerne Living Space Prize posthumously in 1998. The band name &quot;MetaLogue&quot; refers to Planzer&#x27;s penchant for wordplay and symbolises the symbiosis of the various elements that come together in this project. On the one hand, it is the young musicians who bring Planzer&#x27;s music into the light of the present and allow the audience to participate in a musical dialogue that takes place far away from the mainstream. On the other hand, it is the lyrics of singer Nina Reiter, who picks up on Planzer&#x27;s pioneering spirit in the synthesis of jazz and poetry, thus creating a meta-level to the previously instrumental compositions. On the occasion of the upcoming anniversary – Planzer would have celebrated his 85th birthday in 2024 – the Mani Planzer Big Band and the MorschAchBlasorCHester will pay tribute to the musical bridge-builder, trailblazer and pioneer with works arranged by Nina Reiter.

The art of jazz arranging has been around for 100 years. The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will trace the development of this art form for big band - a best-of program as a look back at our season theme The Art of Arranging. The journey begins in the 1920s, continues with the swing and big band era of the 1930s and 1940s and leads into the post-war period. Influential arrangers such as Bob Brookmeyer, Gil Evans, Carla Bley, Billy Strayhorn, George Gruntz and Mathias Rüegg will be in the spotlight and show how &quot;The Art of Arranging&quot; has developed over the past 50 years.

Two extraordinary musicians, whose paths have crossed again and again over the years, are fulfilling their wish to perform together for the first time: Caroline Chevin is known for her strong voice, her soulful songs that tell authentic stories. On top of this comes her top-class entertainment, with which she captivates every audience. Rose Ann Dimalanta, internationally sought-after pianist, singer and composer, known from her performances with Prince and in this country with Seven, commands the stage with her virtuoso playing. Her musical versatility makes her a fascinating artist. The collaboration between the two musicians promises a great musical synergy. They will play songs that have made them what they are today and tell each other stories from their musical lives. Çiçek Taksi

Even if you don&#x27;t understand the lyrics, the music of Çiçek Taksi goes straight to the heart. The band, which the Turkish-Kurdish-Swiss singer Selin Dettwiler founded with three musician friends in Bern, dedicates its new album to the love of poetry; a love that knows no language barriers. Bin Dilde - in a thousand languages – is about love, repression, pain and hope, all woven into the songs. The Turkish poems that the band members collected as the basis for the songs were written by people living in Switzerland. They provide touching insights into arriving in an unknown place and tell of the very different circumstances that led to a departure to new homes in the writers&#x27; country of origin. BCUC stands for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness. Their music is made up of indigenous funk, hip-hop and punk energy. But instead of trying to classify and analyze the music, you should simply visit a live show: An absolute stunner! In recent years, BCUC has played with legends such as Femi Kuti and Saul Williams, fascinated audiences at the most important European festivals (Glastonbury, Roskilde, Womad, Fusion, Sziget and many more) and also won the prestigious Womex Artist Award. And should anyone still have any doubts as to whether it&#x27;s worth it: “without a doubt the best live act I saw” - Gilles Peterson “Loved their set, it was one of my highlights of a great weekend” - Nick Dewey, Glastonbury Festival “guaranteed to touch untapped corners of your soul” - Okayafrica “the most impressive newcomers this year” - The Guardian It all started in a shipping container in Soweto, South Africa, where the band members of BCUC met. The shipping container was converted into a community restaurant and stands next to the church where Desmond Tutu organized the escape of the most wanted anti-apartheid activists. This historical background is echoed in BCUC&#x27;s music: Their music is a hedonistic trance, but also as a weapon for political and spiritual liberation. Raphael Jost Quintett

Singer and pianist Raphael Jost sees himself as a modern-day crooner. His songs are snapshots of his life, catchy and always cleverly packaged, and he never fails to surprise with his powerful, warm voice. At Moods, Jost will be presenting his newly formed quintet for the first time, as well as lots of new music, including fresh original compositions that have been created and matured over the past few months. Jost will be joined by Bastien Rieser on trumpet and Alex Hendriksen on tenor saxophone, Raphael Walser on double bass and London drummer Luke Tomlinson. The five musicians are united by their boundless joy of playing and their love of the jazz tradition.

Golnar Quintet

Born and raised in Tehran, the Iranian-Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Golnar Shahyar understands music as a political act. Drawing equally from the traditions of Southwest Asian, North Africa, and contemporary music of Europe and America, she creates an extraordinary mixture of languages and styles. She dedicated her last tour to the slogan Woman* Life Freedom in the light of the ongoing revolution in Iran. With her current song &#x27;Tell my mother she has no daughter anymore&#x27; she touched thousands of Iranians at home and abroad. Inner Unity Ensemble & Sakina Teyna

Defying the colonialist term &quot;World Music&quot;, the Inner Unity Ensemble connects musicians of the diaspora with a very diverse set of backgrounds to (re)create music across cultural, regional, and genre borders. Their music is defined by modal and microtonal concepts found in Iranian Radif or Arabic and Turkish Maqams blended with various harmonic concepts in European classical music or jazz. Welcoming rhythmic accents and melodic harmonies as rich as their very own diverse heritage, the band features musicians from Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkey, the Kurdish regions, and Italy. Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Thomas Gansch

Almost exactly ten years have passed since Thomas Gansch&#x27;s first performance with the ZJO. Today he is a good friend of the band and a favorite of the ZJO audience. The basic concept of the evening therefore remains the same: musical fireworks, fun, unconventional. This year, the Austrian trumpeter will celebrate the music from his folk crossover album Alpen &amp; Glühen with the ZJO. Ed Partyka will enrich Thomas Gansch&#x27;s original compositions inspired by folk music, which were originally performed by a chamber ensemble, with jazz sounds and big band power.

After the success of his solo album Idantitâ, released in 2022, the Fribourg pianist continues to reshape his folklore, this time proposing a revised version in which he invites other musicians to mingle with this identity, to break down barriers even further and propose a musical crossover that multiplies imaginary potentials. This colourful project in chamber music format brings together artists with different influences: violinist Baiju Bhatt, singer Claire Huguenin, guitarist Louis Matute, cellist Lucie Gockel and euphonist Raphael Rossé.

Christoph Grab’s REFLECTIONS feat. Alex Sipiagin

Album Release «Oneness»

The Swiss jazz critic Peter Rüedi praises Christoph Grab&#x27;s ensemble REFLECTIONS as &quot;top-notch, both in the solo flights of all the participants and in the arranged passages&quot; – an ensemble whose interplay is now so harmonious that it has grown into a single organism. Hence the title of their latest album &quot;Oneness&quot; (2024 Lamento Rec), whose meaning also includes being one with the world, empathy and a model for constructive interaction with one another – all qualities that are particularly relevant in today&#x27;s world. As on the previous album &quot;Live at Haberhaus&quot; (Lamento Rec), the music on &quot;Oneness&quot; is based on compositions by Thelonious Monk, to which Christoph Grab adds his own twist through his arrangements. The result is a vibrant, inspired album that shows how iconic material from jazz history can be used to create something new and unheard of. As a special treat, the band has invited none other than Russian-American trumpeter Alex Sipiagin to join them at Moods. It promises to be a unique evening.

Quiet Tree

Quiet Tree is a Swiss trio consisting of Simon Spiess (saxophone / reeds), Jonas Reuther (drums) and Marc Méan (piano &amp; synths). Their music is rooted in the rich, mercurial soil of this thing we tend to call jazz. Unpacking the tree metaphor a bit further: the crown of this elegant being reaches for, and opens up into, the sprawling cosmic dimensions of the unsound, all types of potential sonic after-futures and echoes of worlds beyond! The band describes their music as an 80s-pop-type sort of warmth, but with a space-jazz approach lifted and transported back somewhere around the year 2040. The project’s key focus is working with the song-form. Every member is responsible for submitting compositions and every piece that makes the final cut, gets a mild improv-based facelift every time it gets played. Their manifesto reads: To tell rich stories using sound, capture colour and energy with melodies. Make sure to leave ample space for every instrument to breathe! Everything is possible as long as it expresses a core unity. Transpose the awareness of space to listeners, because you can never go wrong with making extra space for others.

MISS C-LINE & The Rabidz

MISS C-LINE is an up-and-coming neo-soul singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist from Bern/Basel. Her music blends soul and groove with elements of hip-hop and jazz to create a unique and memorable style. Inspired by greats such as Erykah Badu, The Roots and Robert Glasper, MISS C-LINE writes and produces all her songs herself. This earned her a nomination for the Kick Ass Award in 2019, three appearances at the SRF Bounce Cypher, her debut album Surreal was included in international playlists and in 2021 she won the New Generation Jazz Lab Contest. Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Matthias Knoche

Unfortunately, Theo Bleckmann had to cancel his appearance on 9 February due to illness. Fortunately, Matthias Knoche from Berlin has agreed to interpret the Georg Kreisler songs. So it remains an evening full of fine humour, biting satire and fat big band sounds at the Moods Jazz Club. Many thanks to Matthias for stepping in! We wish Theo a speedy recovery and are doing everything we can to reschedule the concert with him as soon as possible. On some evenings, everything is extraordinary: a big band playing the songs of cabaret artist, composer and writer Georg Kreisler. A Grammy-nominated vocalist who pushes the boundaries of jazz. And who, in a poetic and lyrical way, gives Kreisler&#x27;s sometimes biting, sometimes furious lyrics, the best in class in the school of black humor (Die Zeit), a completely new character. Bleckmann, ZHdK lecturer in jazz singing, ECHO Award winner and the voice of the aliens in Men in Black, has already worked with greats such as Laurie Anderson and Philip Glass. As usual, the arrangements are by Ed Partyka.

Justina Lee Brown

Although the hearty and highly talented Nigerian singer Justina Lee Brown and her band have been thrilling audiences at all blues challenges for years, the blues is only one facet of her music. African and Caribbean influences, gospel, soul and R&#x27;n&#x27;B are also at the heart of her charismatic performances, in which she impresses as an energetic performer with a phenomenal voice. In her native Lagos, Justina Ogunlolu faced the tough struggle for survival as a street kid and fought her way through to the big stages of Europe with perseverance and stamina. After a few performances in Switzerland, Justina and Nic Niedermann crossed paths. The guitarist, composer and producer has been one of the driving forces in the Swiss blues scene for years. Nic becomes the new bandleader and puts together a top-class band for Justina. Justina Lee Brown finally gets the long-awaited opportunity to record her own songs, which she draws from a huge pool of intensive experience, and to realize them for her brilliant stage performances. Meta Zero&#x27;s music is of the here and now, full of adventure and the joy of experimentation. Shaking the foundations of the jazz tradition, the four musicians create dreamlike experiences characterised by colourful sounds, equality and openness. On their debut album &#x27;Prometheus&#x27; (2019), the band played with the avant-garde, timing and tempi, creating a work to surrender to and dream about. What can we expect from the new album? We are all very curious!

David Virelles Trio

Cuban-born pianist and composer David Virelles grew up in a musical home. He began learning to play the piano at a young age, immersing himself in the diverse Cuban musical tradition and discovering jazz greats such as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Andrew Hill. After recording with Juan Pablo Torres and Jane Bunnett in Cuba, Virelles graduated from Humber College in Toronto and moved to New York City in 2009, where he studied composition with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Henry Threadgill. Since then, he has collaborated with musicians as diverse as Andrew Cyrille, Bill Frisell, Chris Potter, Tomasz Stanko, Wadada Leo Smith, Hermeto Pascoal, Ravi Coltrane, Marcus Gilmore and many more. rrDavid Virelles has received various awards and prizes for his versatile, creative work, including the Oscar Peterson Prize. In 2023, his trio album Carta was released on Intakt Records: eight of the nine compositions were penned by David Virelles, all oscillating between composition and improvisation and opening doors to free interpretation and development.

divr make music that celebrates the moment. divr - that&#x27;s Philipp Eden (piano), Raphael Walser (bass) and Jonas Ruther (drums). Together, the three friends are dedicated to improvisation and spontaneous composition, so no two concerts ever sound the same. Based on repetitive patterns and multidirectional rhythms, they create flowing soundscapes that captivate the audience. The focus is always on attentive listening, which turns the music into an abstract conversation. At Moods, they christened their debut album Is This Water, which was released on the renowned Finnish label We Jazz Records and co-produced by Dan Nicholls. Dan Nicholls

Dan Nicholls is a keyboardist, producer and curator who uses improvisation and sound with heart and rare artistry to explore everything. From the most intimate listening concerts to the communal, political and ecstatic space of the dance floor. He has collaborated with some of the world&#x27;s most influential electronic music pioneers, as well as artists from the European jazz and improvisational music scene, and has explored dance, film and visual art. For Dan, instruments such as the keyboard, piano, modular synthesizer and computer are intimate tools that are integrated into a playful approach that pays attention to space and connection. 

Zurich Jazz Orchestra feat. Karolina Strassmayer

Gil Evans' «New Bottle Old Wine»

The Zurich Jazz Orchestra will present the complete program of the original arrangements of Gil Evans&#x27; classic album New Bottle Old Wine from 1958, with alto saxophone soloist Karolina Strassmayer interpreting the parts originally played by Cannonball Adderley. Compositions such as King Porter Stomp, St. Louis Blues and Round Midnight will be heard. Before Strassmayer became the first woman to join the WDR Big Band in 2004, she was part of the New York jazz scene for over 15 years and played with Chico Hamilton and the Diva Jazz Orchestra. Today she is a professor of jazz saxophone at the Folkwang University in Essen, where she founded and still directs an empowerment program for women in jazz. The second set of the concert features jazz standards arranged by Ed Partyka for the outstanding soloists of the ZJO and orchestrated for the same unique instrumentation as Gil Evans: Trumpets and trombones are reduced from four to three each, with horn and tuba used instead. The piano is missing entirely and the saxophones are largely replaced by flutes and clarinets.

Emilio Giovanoli Quintet

The project was initiated by Emilio Giovanoli, a double bass player and composer from Ticino who is already well-known in the Swiss music scene as a versatile sideman. His aim is to bring together musicians with a shared vision whom he met during their studies at the renowned Jazzcampus in Basel. The resonant, earthy sound of Emilio Giovanoli&#x27;s double bass blends with the soundscapes created by the brilliant touch of Alexandre Cahen on piano (France), the reactive groove of drummer Max Liebenberg (South Africa), the immersive playing of guitarist Martin Theurillat (Chile/Switzerland) and the airy lines of saxophonist Lennard Fiehn (Germany). Their imagination is fed by the broad tradition of jazz filtered through the meditative landscapes of the Alps. These omnipresent natural obstacles with their peaks, lakes and forests provide a meditative source of inspiration, creating music that is radiant, vulnerable and communicative. The project&#x27;s first self-produced EP is planned for the end of 2023.

Ravi Ramsahye PROTOTYPE

Ravi Ramsahye PROTOTYPE stands like an archetype in the collective subconscious for a model that combines research and accessibility. The quartet develops a progressive jazz with rock and pop influences, guided by odd meters. Ravi Ramsahye&#x27;s music emerges from an introspection nourished by the emotional intensity of pop-rock and the world of video games, drawing enchanting soundscapes while captivating with an explosive rhythm. This energy is discharged in the different backgrounds of the band members, who dialog with each other to form intoxicating atmospheres and sonic explorations. The pieces are pervaded by rhythmic asymmetries and yet find a flow in their irregularity. In this stormy cloud, floating melodies entwine with harmonic sensibility. PROTOTYPE is the result of an eclectic symbiosis and an invitation to take off – to lift off the body and the heart.

Claudia Masika is a natural born singer from Kenya, whose talent was recognized early on by her grandmother. It was from her that Claudia learned the magic of traditional singing in the Luo language. Claudia has been gaining a foothold in Switzerland for around 15 years and has established herself as a top act with her international band. Her own version of the Afro-fusion sound has found favor with a wide audience at home and abroad, far beyond the Afro fan community. On stage, Claudia Masika is a force to be reckoned with, and with a large portion of positive energy and humor, meaningful songs and an experienced band behind her, she brings a smile to the audience&#x27;s faces and rhythm to their legs.
